First of all, here's what Joe Bob Briggs (aka John Bloom, God Stuff on the Daily Show) had to say about Harry Dean Stanton's part in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me when it aired on Monstervision.

"See, that's cheating. If David Lynch is gonna be weird, he can't just put Harry Dean Stanton in the movie as the trailer park manager. Harry Dean Stanton makes ANYbody's movie weird. Just say the NAME Harry Dean Stanton, and everyone goes "Weirdo." That's a SHORTCUT weirdness."

The Daily Show is a comedy show so I think they were trying to be...comedic. HDS is a fine American character-actor. Cool Hand Luke certainly isn't weird. Nor is Alien or Pretty in Pink. Well, OK...Pretty in Pink is weird, but more due to John Cryer than HDS. All Lynch films are weird and HDS hasn't been in all of them.

So Joe Bob Briggs was...

a) full of it
b) trying to generate some comedy
c) in between career positions
d) all of the above

Christopher, obviously it was a joke. JBB is full of it and trying to generate comedy. That's his schtick. That's what he do.

HDS is weird in all his movies! Even Cool Hand Luke! Bur it's a good weird. Like, a "That guy is great and cool" kind of weird.

I wonder if he ever did a record album of songs. He was singing pretty good in Cool Hand Luke.

Repo Man is one of my very favourites. Apologies for introducing FB in the offtopic section but I always did get an FB feel from this film in a surf-punk-UFO kind of way. Actually now that I´ve typed that it seems pretty elementary.
Anyone else notice Harry Dean Stanton dies in most of his films?

Fallopian twinkled. "They accuse us of being paranoids."
"They?" inquired Metzger, twinkling also.
"Us?" asked Oedipa.

I don't think he's so weird, probably b/c I mostly think of him as the dad from Pretty in Pink and he was so sweet and broken in that movie.

He did put out a 7" single in the mid 90s. "You Don't Miss Your Water" b/w "Across the Borderline". Both cover songs. I have it. I don't know how rare or not rare it is, but it's worth looking for if yer a fan of the man.

And related to the FB comments above, I recall a NME or Melody Maker article from 1999 where Frank talked about his favorite records ("What album would you want played at your funeral?" - questions like that) and I do remember the Repo Man soundtrack popping up.

He's a great actor...he has an off-beat quality that really suits Lynch's movies. I probably saw him first in Alien. He has a small role as an FBI agent in Godfather part II.

....(as TarTar has already noted in his list!)

I just noticed that (Godfather pt. II) when I was watching it the other day, and that's what prompted me to make this post.
