Okey doke, you all seem like a bunch of reasonably intelligent and discerning music fans, so I'm asking for recommendations for bands for me to listen to. More specifically, I'm talking about what may be called 'post-rock', 'experimental alternative space-rock', whatever (i.e. don't post to New Pornographers songs - you know who you are!). I'm really going through a spell of listening to a lot of Godspeed, Silver Mt Zion, Explosions In The Sky, M83, Mogwai, this kind of thing, and I'd be grateful for any pointers to other bands of this ilk. I'm in the process of checking out Rachel's, Stars Of The Lid and Sigur Ros, and I'm liking what I hear. Any others?

to bravely go off topic for a moment... jonathan richman too, i know he's not new. but he's my new god. he's not quite as god like as frank. but he's close. just managed to get a copy of "i'm straight" by JR, *fantastic* - the guy is a god! he's just done too many darn albums! I'm not sure where to start!!

Here's some that I like, in addition to most of what you mentioned, trying to keep within the sensitivities of the bands you listed (I'm missing a bunch, but these have either been long-time standbys or are newfound favorites):
on the harder side of your liking tree: Big Black Slint June of 44 Shipping News Fugazi Brainiac Jesus Lizard (if you like that, try Arab on Radar too! mwahahahahhaah! whoopee!!! ....uh, sorry about that) Oxes Naked Raygun Crain Evergreen
softer/contemplative/and/or southwestern or folk tinged: The Black Heart Procession Don Caballero Windsor for the Derby Tarentel Calexico Papa M Aerial M (some) Tortoise Abilene more experimental and/or darker: Aix Em Klemm Matmos 1 Mile North Tribes of Neurot Rapoon/Zoviet France Muslimgauze
more electronic: Boards of Canada Plaid (ubiquitous) Aphex Twin
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that you might get into Legendary Pink Dots and maybe even Eisturzende Neubauten. Two incredibly long-lived and brilliant bands. If you don't already know about 'em, if you hopped on now you might catch 'em on tour before they disband (I rue the day!).
I would highly recommend that you check out www.epitonic.com which has free mp3 downloads, and an incredible "similar artists" and "more suggestions" cross-linking....as well as www.warprecords.com, which also has free music/radio streaming, and a bunch of great artists that would fall into your current likes. Quarterstick and Touch and Go are good labels to look at for similar stuff. Man, I better stop.
Hope there's something worthwhile in there for ya.

If you are looking for "experimental alternative space-rock," look no further than Failure. Get the album "Fantastic Planet." Download a couple songs off it first to sample it: The Nurse Who Loved Me, Sergeant Politeness, Pillowhead, Stuck on You, Blank, Smoking Umbrellas, Dirty Blue Balloons.
Those are all off that album. The album has 16 (or 17?) tracks and it is amazing from start to finish.
Can I get a witness for how awesome Failure is? (c'mon glacial!)

ah MrCheese... a very good question.
i don't have many additional suggestions on top of what has already been said, but here goes.
Jakob - they are a New Zealand band that have released 2 albums and an ep. their first ep (actually 70 mins) is un-fucking-believeable, whereas there 1st album just sounded like 10 different versions of Ex-Cowboy. Their new one is a vast improvement, but still doesn't come near their debut ep - but not much does. unfortunately, the aforementioned ep is out of print, but i have a copy...haha.
also, definitely check out The Black Heart Procession - all of their records are unbelievably good - esp "2" and "3"
i'd also suggest tracking down some live recordings of these bands... personally, I have quite a number of fantastic live recordings of godspeed, mogwai and sigur ros which i find myself listening to much more than the actual records.
looking forward to A Silver Mount Zion tonite cheesy? should be a very good concert....i am very much looking forward to it - esp now that i've sorted out my missing ticket fiasco! wanna meet up at all for a beer?

Saw a hiphop group called Seth P Brundel in Barcelona rapping in Spanish and English, they were excellent. A Russian feller called Alexei Borisov too, though I did miss the Matthew Herbert Big Band who I heard were terrific. P.S. Jonathan Richman fucken rocks.

either/or, i'm not picky.
but yeah, it is all totally sold out now.
i am only going to the first weekend, as thats when the bands that i like are playing.
i have never met any of the people I am going with - one's a guy who i've traded with a few times (actually downtothewell from here), and a couple of people who are flying over from Japan and 1 Englishman...we will be a very eclectic group!
i'm not quite sure of what to expect, but it's going to be a blast!

cool, i can't remember which weekend is which? is one sonic youth and the other stephen malkmus? i think i was planning on going to the 2nd, with sm, not the sy one...

and aren't SY and SM playing the same weekend - the 2nd?
just checked, and yes they are both playing the 2nd weekend.
the first is Mogwai, Shellac and Tortoise... line-up: MOGWAI » SHELLAC » TORTOISE » BOREDOMS » CAT POWER » ISIS » TRANS AM » PART CHIMP » MIKE WATT + THE SECONDMEN » MIKE WATT + THE JOM & TERRY SHOW » LIGHTNING BOLT » KID606 » TODD » BOBBY CONN » ENVY » JAMES ORR COMPLEX » ATOMBOMBPOCKETKNIFE » THE DISHES » MCLUSKY » A WHISPER IN THE NOISE » ENTRANCE » UZEDA » STINKING LIZAVETA » FRENCH TOAST » AZITA CONVERGE THE SECONDS LUNGFISH
i'm also seeing Isis and Cat Power on either side of ATP in London....it's a godd'un

i don't think we that off topic because all of this is very relevent to mrcheese getting some ideas for new bands....see, i posted a whole list of them above!
see, i prefer the 1st weekend cause i wanna see about a third of that lineup, with the other 2 thirds i have never heard of, whereas the 2nd weekend is so-so for me.
oh, yes, my post reminds me MrCheese. Isis are a definite must-become-familiar-with-band. They are more of a heavy metal-post-rock band, but they play some awesome tunes. I only have their latest cd, called 'Oceanic' which was my top cd of 2002. They opened for Mogwai for some shows on their last US tour... some info can be found http://www.lambgoat.com/bands/view.asp?bid=136 also, they're playing at ULU on March 19. tickets only £10 - come along!

Thank you muchly, ladles and gentlespoons. Definitely some worth checking out, I knew I could count on apl for the closest thing to a definitive list! I've heard a few on there, Big Black, Fugazi, Naked Raygun, Aphex Twin et al, and I've been hearing some good things of some of the others, so ta!
Benji, sorry I didn't see your post till I just got back from the gig... Good gig though, although it gave me another reason to hate London audiences, you'll know what I mean... I was stood behind three of the biggest morons in the place, and there was quite a few.
What did you think of Ella Guru? Pretty good in a Low Do Country kind of way. I wanted to get a CD, or even better a vinyl of ASMZ, but they'd sold out by the end. Doh!

MrCheese... I thought the gig was amazing. I was so impressed by the power that they managed to create and it was just mindblowing. one of the best i've ever been too.
the highlight for me was the 2nd encore "triumph of our tired eyes" it is my favourite song of theres, and it was just so beautiful last night....
but yeah, the crowd did suck with all the heckling, with the the "Jim Carey" call being the only funny one of the lot.
I managed to get a prime position leaning on the rails on the middle heightened section just below the sound desk so i had an unobstructed view of the entire show...i was stoked.
I got there a bit late, so i only managed to hear the last song by ella guru - the one about horses, but it was very nice, and i would have liked to have heard more.
yeah, asmz were selling a tour-only ep, but i never saw anywhere to buy it, and as you say, it would have been sold out by the end anyways.
also, you didn't see the 2 people collapse after about 30mins? they were right below me and i had noticed them earlier smoking something dodgy and then lo-and-behold, 10mins later 2 of the 3 collapsed within 10 seconds of each other. they had to be carried out cause they were totally unconscious...i hope they were ok.
another band i thought of that you should definitely check out are the dirty three. they're an australian 3-piece instrumental band. violin, guitar and drums. incredibly emotive music, with amazing power. check out their album 'horse stories' is one of my desert island discs.

I don't know if you could here the bunch of morons on your left hand side, at the back of the main floor. I was stood at the very back, right behind these losers, and they were shouting and laughing the whole way through. Now, I'm not against people having a good time, but this kind of behaviour (i.e. disrupting the show for everybody else) is part of the reason I don't drink or anything. I'm not a violent man, but I was close.
I thought Efrim responded well to the Jim Carrey call: something about a man with a parrot wearing diapers. How cool is that? The guitarist from Godspeed you black emperor all but namechecked Keith Harris!
I didn't see the people collapse, but I hope they were OK... they missed a good show. Also cheers for the Dirty Three tip; I heard a lot of these bands when I was researching Steve Albini for an assignment I was doing, and Dirty Three was one of those which I meant to follow up on after the project. However, for whatever reason, I didn't but will now!

so were you on the left hand side looking at the stage, or left hand side looking from the stage? cause i was on the former - maybe i was standing right behind you...man, i shoudda spit at ya or something.....
i hate talkers and wankers....it's just so incredibly rude...luckily everyone in my immediate vicinity was very quiet, and also weren't smoking, so even though everyone else in the scala appeared to be, i was not forced to cough my way thru the set.
many dirty 3 fans think 'ocean songs' is their best, but i was frankly disappointed with mr albini's production/engineering on that record. oh well.
now i'm being a stupid foreigner, but i had no idea who the hell Efrim was talking about...wouldn't know Keith Harris from a bar of soap.... think i need to immerse myself in English culture a bit more....well apart from the ales and bitters that is.

Y'know, I'm not really into new music, but if you want some really good spacey freak out music, then you need to look no further than the following classic bands:
Can Faust Amon Duul II Spacemen 3 Red Krayola And maybe Scratch Acid and The Jesus Lizard
A lot of people have been posting bands that really are in <i>no</i> way related to, uh, what you'd call "post rock," (Fugazi? Good band, but uh - a little off from what Mr. Cheeseman was looking for). In fact, the above bands are really only in aproximate relation to the bands you mentioned; they're pretty, uh, I call it psychedelic, but y'know, I guess if "experimental alternative space-rock" floats your boat, then so be it.

Scratch Acid and Rapeman rule. You have dandy taste in rock. Id like to add Tar, Unsane (first couple of records only), Laughing Hyenas, The Melvins of course, Big'n, Table, Crain, Hammerhead, Brainiac, Shorty, Zen Guerilla, and Enon (anyone who hasn't heard the Believo LP is truly missing out).

To be fair, I appreciate all the suggestions, but James M makes a good point. Only a few of these bands are of the ilk of the ones I was suggesting at the beginning. However, if you can validate yourself, you may stay. If not, begone!
Course, James M proceeds to invalidate his own opinion. Jesus Lizard are great, but 'post-rock'?

well as long as you appreciate my suggestions more cause they're better i'm not too worried.
and i think any connections in musical 'type' are pretty redundant anyways, so just go with the flow man.
