I think it fails miserably in comparison with the Bends...

OK Computer is, no doubt, their best album. Hail to the Thief took me a while to get into...I never thought I'd get into it, but I finally did and I love it. "There There" is one of their best songs ever.

I think HTTT is incredible, but I don't think that it is as a whole as good as Kid A or OK Computer, for the reason that they have some songs on it that are not of the same caliber as the rest. I wonder if their surroundings during recording might have influenced their focus. The album seems like it wants to be a concept, but falls short because of some more (in a bad way) cliched/formulaic songs -"Backdrifts" and "Wolf at the Door" are good songs, but are a few steps back from their recent ingenuity, IMHO. I think I am probably a weirdo in that I prefer OK Computer, and everything since then, to their earlier work. Though Bends was great, I like the warmth, darkness, and mature textures in the albums that follow.

in my not-so-humble opinion, the order is: The Bends, OKC, (tie: Pablo Honey & HTTF, and then kid a and amnesiac in no particular order because I can't listen to either of them

I haven't listened to it much 'cos I don't own it. The reason I don't own it however, is 'cos on first listen(s) I thought it sounded like a load of toss. I am scared to go back to it. I really respect Radiohead but I think they have lost all ability to write a good tune, riff or hook. It's like they thought they couldn't go more electronic whilst retaining some melody somewhere in their songs. They just don't produce anything to make me wanna come back. I really admire that they changed direction but I wish they could have done it without boring the pants off me. But that is only my opinion and I fully understand that people love their last album. I just don't.
As for winning Best Album at the NME awards, well I think past reputation and die-hard 'They Can Do No Wrong' fans have won them that award. A bit like when Oasis won Best Band last year (WHAT!?!?!?). For once I am beginning to feel that perhaps these awards should be voted for by the publication and not the public 'cos half of their readers still love British bands that are long since past it. Once again, this is just my opinion.
I guess in summery, how the hell do you top OK Computer?!?!?!

I'll take the newer Radiohead. The Bends bores me to tears.

I'm slightly worried that Thief might mark the beginning of a creative downward spiral for Radiohead. That said, it's a really good album, though it lacks in cohesion and is a bit longish for my tastes.
Kid A and Amnesiac are my faves, BTW.

I still haven't gotten into Hail to the Thief yet.
Is there a 1-800 help line I can call? I'm kind of worried...
Maybe i haven't listened to it enough.

I really love the new album....and I even got the little eps that have come out....2.99$ each (not bad) .... but I have to admit that I only 'rediscovered' Radiohead in the past few months....had trouble getting into it b4 due to the electronica aspect, but now I embrace it. My strategy was to force myself to listen to prodigy for a few weeks and it worked.....amnesiac is quite jazzy/ very good. ....why is the bends considered such a good album? I haven't got it yet...but will and was wondering.... |

I was really happy with Hail To The Thief , after being a little disappointed with the last couple. Am a HUGE fan of OK Computer, and while I really like The Bends, there are a couple of tracks I'm not so keen on.
And they're still shit hot live by the way. |

I have to say that I completely agree with everything you've said here Homer. everything since OK Computer has bored be to tears. The Bends is their greatest work, with OKC behind by a fair way primarliy because i hate airbag with a passion the others i decided were not worth my time or effort to buy after listeneing to copies.

airbag's their best song!! well after knives out....
3rd Annual Australian Frank Black Countdown August 2003 - all involved parties rank EVERY released FB song from FB self/titled to the present - average ranks are calculated - beer (or suitable substitute) is added (mostly in drinking-game form - ie. rate a song well below its average and you drink a punishing amount), then sit back and enjoy a day of frank black....the only problem is quite often memory of the top songs is somewhat limited the next day |

I think the reason The Bends is so great is because it's good, solid, rock music. You can really hear the Pixies influence...but it's not a complete rip-off. They added their own element to it (Kindof like Nirvana, although they ripped off the Pixies quite a bit it's still much different.)

And as a final two cents, I'll state the opinion that The Bends is their worst record because it's the one on which they stand out amoung other bands the least.

You have a point, interloper, but... is it really less original than Pablo Honey? I haven't actually heard the latter, but all the reviews/comments I read pretty much say it's the least remarkable RH album by far.

I think Radiohead's new stuff is much more creative, expirimental, avant-garde, and weird than the old stuff. And I LOVE experimental stuff. HTTT is less weird than Kid A, though.
Kid A, Amnesiac, Ok Computer, and HTTT are the albums I love. NOT the Bends. Bends is stupid. Planet Telex is a great song, yeah, but it's a boring album that in no way represents the intelligent and sophisticated originality of this great band.
B-sides are the best. "Faithless the Wonder Boy" is the catchiest song in the world. "Polyethylene" = AMAZING. "Gagging Order" is so pretty.
"Sit Down, Stand Up" and "2+2=5" are brilliant songs.
and, one more thing......
"EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IN ITS RIGHT PLACE!!!!!!!!!"
Wow...not only is their newer stuff more creative, developed, and genius, but it's more catchy, too. NEw Stuff all the way.
Good solid rock music is the kind of thing that makes me NOT like an album. Incorporation of untraditional elements (like Nathan said) is a requisite for my pleasure.

Pablo Honey is not even a condsideration to me. I don't think they did anything substantial until OK.

I only have OK Computer, not to pushed with their earlier stuff, though they do have good earlier songs....would'nt mind hearing Kid A and 'Thief. Actually, that crunching noise before the chorus in 'Creep' always makes me think of the little noise in 'I Bleed' before the second chorus....I'll get me anorak!

Half of the songs on Hail are kinda crappy. On Bends and OK there is much less crap. |
