I've finally got around to hatching my Sea Monkeys tonight, just waiting for the water to cool down... I've got the Sea Monkeys on Mars set, it looks great. i actually got Sea Monkeys (this isn't my first set, first got some a good few years back) before I realised Palace of the Brine was about them, stupid I know, as it actually says Sea Monkey in it! LOL!

Anyone else got Sea Monkeys? Any cool tanks?

Anyway, 2 links for the ignorant amongst you...

i love the fact on the back of the box on mine...

"Amazing Live Sea-Monkeys (just like the ones in this Martian Planetarium) were used in the US Space Program and were actually flown on 3 daring rocket launches into outer space (including the historic earth-orbiting expedition with space pioneer John Glenn - one of America's first Austronauts)."

they're just so flaming cool!

only 1 day?! are you sure you gave them chance! it takes a while until you can actually see them... and didn't you use the 2-year guarantee to get some more monkey eggs and food?

After my one-day sea monkey incident, I was so dismayed and disturbed that I decided against any more attempts to recessitate poor little shrimp frozen in a hellish suspended animation state. Think about it...these damned creatures are in a sense, trapped in shrimp purgatory. In an attempt to justify my depression over it, I see my botched batch of sea monkeys NOT as murder, but as a sort of Harriett Tubman incident. I acted as Harriett Tubman! I helped hundreds of enslaved shrimp cross over from this world to the next! Except I'm a man. And white. And slaves weren't briney...Oh God WHAT HAVE I DONE??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!

lol! erm, yeah... apparently they have no brain (as such)... but a soul? erm, possibly!

'Sea Monkeys don’t have brains; they have groupings of nerves called “ganglia.” One of these is found in the Sea Monkey’s head, the other just below the gut. These ganglia send out the messages to the Sea Monkey’s body to do different things, such as eat, or sleep, or chase after another Sea Monkey'

hehe, i'm going to spend all night on that sea monkey site! waiting for my purified holy water to reach room temperature before i can add the eggs and give them life!

So why are they called "monkeys," when they're obviously nothing like primates?

from the FAQ...

Q. Why are they called Sea-Monkeys® when, in fact, they're still brine shrimp?
A. Ah, the most frequently asked question. Remember, they are not really brine shrimp - see above. As you will notice they are closely related to the brine shrimp but are not, in fact, brine shrimp. As for the name, that is a closely guarded secret and I would have to kill you if I told you.

Haven't a clue then!

and in case you were interested...

Q. What exactly are Sea-Monkeys®?
A. From the Official Sea-Monkey® Handbook: Sea-Monkeys® are a variety of Artemia which are crustaceans such as Brine Shrimp or Seed Shrimps. Their correct latin name is Artemia nyos ("after the New York Ocean Science Laboratories where the hybrid Sea-Monkeys were developed.")

Based on the fact that sea monkeys come in playsets, I would imagine that the name might have something to do with the fact that people like to watch them frolic, as they do with monkeys. On the other hand, I would imagine that sea monkeys do less flinging of their own feces.

I always enjoyed their advertisements in comic books. They'd have a full page ad with great drawings of the whole Sea-Monkey family. I always remembered the lady had a huge rack. But anyways, it was always the fantasy of controlling little "sea-monkeys" in your own little enviroment.

Bumblebeeboy2, that'd be pretty cool if you could post their pictures if they get big enough.

Their's nothing better than ooohing & ahhhing over baby sea monkeys.

You inspired me to get my own "Sea Monkeys on Mars" set. They rock! It took a couple of days longer than it should have for them to actually hatch..but they did! And now they're flourishing. In a lake that's like an ocean...

yeah, i'm working on getting better photo's, it's a bit tricky, the camera was on full zoom... might try using more 'natural' light and turn off the flash, to get less reflection off the tank...
