It is tough to go against convention or to not conform, even if it's something done on moral ground like Crouton's choice of abstinences or whatever.
As a person grows older, they do find themselves discovering things that older people told them to be true, but some things you have to find out for yourself. That doesn't mean the younger person is an idiot, they're just younger. We all were there, and unless anyone here is the oldest person alive, we all are still there, and probably will be there until we die. There's always someone older. People change in some ways as they grow older. For some this means morals, opinions, etc. For others, it means completely different changes. One person growing older and letting go of certain morals (or perhaps ideals is a better word, morals implies that sex before marriage is immoral, and maybe it is and maybe it isn't, that's not the point here).
So it seems unfair to say he'll "grow out of it", and I'm surprised he hasn't come back to argue the point/get upset - but, as I said, Crouton is a good guy and I suppose that's not in his character. No, Jimmy, I'm not saying he's a good guy JUST because he doesn't believe in sex before marriage. He's been around quite some time and I've talked with him many times, and he is a genuinely decent person even if he came across as 'holier-than-thou' to you.
It seems like quite an adult stand to take and certainly far more difficult than to take the stance of being sexually active or even to have tried it. Good for him. If more people were willing to do the things they believe in even though it means a harder road, the world would be a better place.

| Underneath all the eccentricity, Crouton is a decent person (though his apologies aren't sincere) BUT I think it's perfectly all right for anyone to disagree with his morals, and "bashing" is too strong a term. |
