I was downloading some video and audio from the Faith No More FTP site last night. Some good stuff there. Any other fans of Faith No More and Mike Patton?
He has been involved with some great records over the last 12 years:
Faith No More:
Angel dust
King for a day, fool for a lifetime
Album of the year
Mr Bungle:
Mr Bungle
Disco Volante
California
Tomahawk:
Tomahawk
Mit gas
Lovage
Music to make love to your old lady by.
I have to confess that I struggle with Fantomas and also his two solo albums. A bit too close to the edge for me!
Nonetheless, it is a very solid body of work. I think he approaches FB’s work rate at around 1 record per year on average.
I downloaded a live TV performance of 'God hates a coward' by Tomahawk. Absolute genius. There a very few artists out there who can put that kind of energy into a performance.

I was 15 when King For A Day came out and I remember my mother found distasteful a Q magazine picture with Mike Patton wearing fake plastic breasts, I felt encouraged with rock musics continuing power to, if not out-and-out shock, make people wrinkle their noses.
-- "You one of those right wing nut outfits?" inquired the diplomatic Metzger. Fallopian twinkled. "They accuse us of being paranoids." "They?" inquired Metzger, twinkling also. "Us?" asked Oedipa.

Was a big FNM fan back around The Real Thing and Angel Dust. Saw them twice and had a blast. But then they parted ways with big sick ugly Jim Martin, and it was never the same. Ever notice how some bands produce better music the more internal strife there is between them?
Just coz I'm new doesn't mean I'm just here for the Pixies updates. |

Saw them live on the 'Angel Dust' tour...a tape about fisting was played before they came on...bit sloppy live, they were supported by L7 who played snippets of Metallica's 'Enter Sandman' between songs....FNM were treated to a chorus of 'You fat bastard!' by the crowd! Martin was informed of his dismisal by fax....'King' was a bit of a dodgy album, but with some inspired moments. 'Album/Year' was a bit of improvement. Hav'nt heard much from Patton lately.

I love the guy, especially the Mr Bungle albums. I have a friend who is such a big fan that, when he urinated into the crowd at a fantomas gig, tried his hardest to ingest some, to try and absorb his talent. "I have a friend" is to be taken literally. It was not me.

but yeah, i went to see tomahawk last year. was very amusing to say the least. plus the melvins were supporting. which was extrememly entertaining!!!!

Methinks he doth protest too much!
Patton is a sick bastard, and for that and his vocal talent I applaud him. To think I was pissed when Chuck Mosley got replaced.

Can't agree with this Carl! 'King for a day..' is a stunning album. An eclectic blend of crooning and shrieking. In my top 5 albums of all time list.
His latest projects have been the two Tomahawk albums and Lovage. Not sure what else he's up to.

Evidence was great, thought Digging the Grave a bit leaden.
P.S. My cousin bought Album of the Year on the strength of the title(!)

I'm not familiar w/ Patton's solo work... or much of his post-FNM work for that matter.
I know King Buzzo from the Melvins is in Fantomas ... but I also heard that they sucked and were pretty much unlistenable. Then again, the same could be said for certain Melvins albums as of late.
I also remember giving Mr. Bungle a listen at a friend's bequest, and not being overly impressed
Faith No More's "Angel Dust" is one of my top albums of all time. |

I think FB might have something to say about that!
But you're spot on regarding 'King for a day..'. An amazing album. In my top 5.
Have you seen the Tomahawk videos on the Faith No More ftp site?? Fantastic live tv performances of 'God hates a coward' and 'Flashback'. Mike Patton wears a dust mask for the first song and then inexplicably dons a hairnet for the second one. What a loon.

Hey Barney -would you mind sharing the link for that site? I'd love to see those videos, and I'm sure my husband would be even happier. We bought tickets to see Tomahawk play in Columbus last year, and had to miss the show due to illness (even had tix to the preshow party) which sucked a great big one.

Anything for apl!!
Address is ftp.cv.org
Anonymous user id
Only 20 users at a time. I just tried to get on and failed but I don't normally have to wait too long.
The videos are under the Tomahawk subdirectory - Channel V. Presume they were live tv broadcasts. Some of the best live music I've seen in a long time.
Hope you get through.

Very sweet. Thanks a million Barney! Anyone know if Mike Patton will be touring soon in any of his current incarnations? Didn't Tomahawk cancel their European shows last year? Man, but I could go for some live music right about now. I haven't been to a show since we quit smoking - I'm not sure I'd know what to do with myself.

Wow -with Rahzel? Crazy! Patton can't *not* work, he'sa freakin' force of nature. Yeah, I'm sure we'd be there, it only depends on where they are gonna be. I can't find any info about this pair touring on cv.org. I'm lost....

D'oh! It it had been a Brazilian Wandering Spider, I would be in convulsions right now. Thanks.
None of those dates are very close to Columbus, OH, but we have been thinking of making a weekend trip to PA - I hear there are some interesting Toynbee tiles there, as well as the building with the address listed on a few of the tiles in South America. Hmmmm....

Ooh.. Here´s Patton on Norah Jones: “You don’t recruit someone like that unless you … I mean, I had something real specific in mind for her, and I wanted to take her out of her element and put her in a new environment and make it exciting, and she loved it. She did great. But yeah, you won’t recognize Norah. She’s cussing her ass off. It’s insane. She’s like a cruel vamp, and it’s super sexy, hot and, yeah, cruel.”

I knew nothing of the man but Surfer_Rosa (and later HeywoodJablome)'s constant nagging made me want to check him out. I just went out and bought "Disco Volante", which blew me away. Needless to say, I'm a big fan now and own everything I could get my hands on (except Maldoror, I'm still a bit reluctant). I love Mr. Bungle & Fantomas, I enjoy the Tomahawk albums immensely, Lovage, Kaada & Patton, you name it. Even his hip-hop album has been in heavy rotation chez jediroller for the last 3 months.
The Patton connection turned me on to John Zorn and I've been enjoying the Naked City box set for a solid month. Insane stuff.
Still not too sure about the Melvins though. But I'm working on it.

I have the Melvins record with Jello Biafra, Sieg Howdy! it´s pretty good, though I would say the Melvins are wonderful live. And thanks again to Nic and Heywood for mentioning Patton so often, it revitalised the way I play and listen to music.

You forgot one his best albums, (imo), the Dillenger Escape Plan With Mike Patton...probably the most hardcore Patton album.
I'm a huge Mr.Bungle fan as well. |

I've heard the "Peeping Tom" - very good.
I tell you what, if you ever have a chance to pick up the 4 CD Faith No More B-Sides Box Set - do so! It gave me months of listening pleasure - alot of alt takes and just plain weird shit! |
