About 6-7 years ago , myself and my partner were putting a cedar shingle roof on a cottage on Cape Cod, Mass. It was one of the first few really hot days of summer and we weren’t used to the heat yet. Around mid-morning when we took our break, a guy shambles over from the house next door. We had the truck doors open with a old Grateful Dead CD just playing over and over. My partner knew who he was and introduced me. I didn't know anything about him, or his music. He however was very nice and curious about the work, materials, etc., and asked to look around. He came back at noon time with a cooler full of ice cold beers and homemade Italian subs. Really good ones with chewy bread, hot mustard and, oil and vinegar Turns out the house was his dads and he was down with his ex and a couple of dogs visiting and hanging out. |

My husband passed up the opportunity to meet him at First Ave. in Mpls. I pointed him out as he was standing 3 feet from us in the crowd while we watched Rev. Horton Heat up on stage. He didn't want to bother him. I had to bite my tounge! Hard!

Twice at the one man show at Temple Bar last year. Once at the Tower Records signing in Dublin and once after the gig at the Astoria last year while we were waiting for my wifes coat at the cloakroom.
Good firm hand shaker - fair play!
Also he bumped into my wife when he was unloading the tour bus outside Vicar St Dublin last year. He said 'Oh sorry ma'am' what a gent. Much better than get out of my bleedin' way!

Yeah, you shook his hand while Steve and I were lost in the crowd. Life is so unfair!

Umm, sorry to detract and go back to the origin of the thread here but I met him & he was very funny and interesting and seemed to be sincere in taking an interest in my inane babbling.
Made the fact of me doubting my own sanity and powers of judgement for 2 hours in the cold seem worthwhile...
Considering that I still have the ticket stub in my wallet, I reckon that its well worth trying to meet him if you get the chance (or even in my case; engineering the chance!)

i met someone who arm wrestled him at a party in Athens, GA (female). i met dave philips last year and probably could have pestered and hung out but i was with my girl and didn't meet him. found out later that 'freguencyofglow' (a member here) had met him and had beers with him down in the pool room at the double door on the same evening so i blew it eh? -not within parameters of actually meeting the big guy but just releasing angst at having not.

Although I did not meet him in the flesh, I did speak with Frank over the phone back in 1994. He was cool, clever, friendly and funny. That same day, a good friend of mine was blessed with an interview with THE MAN himself for a local access cable TV show he'd been doing. Frank and I had chatted about the upcoming interview that evening, unbeknownst to my friend. When Frank walked in for the interview, he said "How is Linda, and where is my letter?" My friend's mind was blown momentarily. It was a major rush for me, and a wonderful memory I recall often. |

Yeah, but who's met the amazing Scientific Phenomenalist? David Lovering is a really cool guy in person. I've shaken Frank's hand as he walked by a bunch of other people shaking hands, and I've met most of the 1st round of catholics. A friend of mine asked frank to pet frank's dog once after a show. I think he got told 'no'. |

Got to meet him after a FB&C's show in 99. MY buddy was working backstage at the show, so he said he could introduce me later. He was very nice, and as mentioned before, good handshake.
I wanted to not be a total idiot and just stand and stare, so I had come up with a topic to talk about, which was how great him and John Doe sounded singing together (they had done a duet of 'I Need Peace' at a show before) and would they ever do something official together some time? He was like "yeah, John Doe, cool guy." And that was about it.
It was nice to actually meet him, but the circustances felt weird, and it was clear that he wanted to get paid for the show and get on his bus.
The strange things was, the show was at a community center, and Frank was freely walking around the floor of the auditorium during the opening band and set changes, and very few people even noticed him. He was just getting a soda at the concession stand and waiting in line like a regular customer, even though I know they had refreshments and beer backstage for the bands...too funny, almost like he just wanted to see if anyone would have the guts to come up to him! |

I haven't met Frank yet, I tried but security were being the dicks they always are and kicked us out. I did, on the other hand, meet David Lovering before and after the show. Such a nice guy. My friend and I were so nervous, he was talking to someone and didn't want to bother him, if it wasn't for my g/f dragging us and introducing us to him we probably wouldn't have talked to him. After the gig he was selling autographed pics and he remembered my name, we talked for a bit and I asked him if he had anymore glowing pickles left, but he said no. Sad for me...

I got to met him once in Deep Ellum (Dallas, Texas) after a show when the Caholics were touring for their Self-Titled release. He was very nice and talking to the small group of people that hung around for awhile after the show. Then I got to talk to him again after Fry Street Fair in Denton, Texas. That time I shook his hand and said some cheesy remark like "I really appreciate all the music you make. Thanks for writing such great music." He said "I'm glad you like it" and then lots of people started coming back stage and he said "Sorry guys I need to leave" and got in to a car and tried to drive away with lots of people knocking on the window with permanet markers and their Frank Black records or old Pixies stuff. I think that could get annoy but, it was great to shake the mans hand. |

He stepped on my arm at the Filmore in SF on the COR tour. It was during Abstract Plain and he even bent down and yelled "sorry" while still playing the guitar.
He actually got pretty pissed at a fan at this show. During Bad Wicked World somebody threw a ball of paper at him and it bounced off his head. I remember him at the edge of the stage leaning over the crowd looking at the guy and mouthing threats and nodding his head at him. As if too say, "c'mon, I'll kick your ass." This moment was heightened by the fact that they were playing Bad Wicked World at that moment. I was prett much at his feet there so, I got a pretty visual of the bit.
