I apologize in advance for bringing up basic topics, but I'm new here...I have to get it out of my system.

I saw him standing outside First Avenue in Minneapolis waiting for a cab...I approached him and said: "How's it going Charles?"
He said: "It's going pretty good."

Then at a later performance, my friend and I went to their tour bus, and knocked on the door...Dave McCaffery came out, we talked for awhile, then asked if Frank was around, and said he was taking a nap.

So, my attempts to meet him have produced mixed results.

Yeah, I've been absolute front and center at every show...and one time he was rocking to my friend and I...it was the same time I met him on the street...maybe he recognized us...probably not.

I did touch his shoe once...but now we're getting a little bit psycho...but oh well.

I also got half of a set list, Dave Phillips guitar pick, and Scott Boutier's drumsticks.

I haven't met him but I've talked to him. Does that count?

Also talked to the afore mentioned McDave, and also Rich.

I got to meet him once.

He approached me (because I wasn't being a spaz but I was waiting for him to be done with what he was doing) and was very nice.

He's just a guy. He used the talent he had to make his own way in the world instead of working for someone else like most of us do. He's worked on that talent continuously and he gets to do what he wants because of it.
I happen to be in admiration of that kind of lifestyle. But he's not a god or an e.t. and he doesn't have healing powers.

I am pretty sure it would have to be pretty draining to have people who are strangers to you coming up to you like they know you. For example, like the guy who said "Hey Charles." No slight to you because I did the same thing to Jeff Buckley once, I said "Hey Jeff" and he was nice but later I thought to myself, I guess that was kind of rude because I don't know him. I should have introduced myself first or something because if someone comes up to me and says my name, and I don't know who they are, I am a bit flustered and thrown off for a bit.

Besides, he's always presented himself publically as either Black Francis or Frank Black. Charles Thompson is his real name and his private name. We only know it because, well, we're fans and we want to know everything, but I am sure only his close friends and family should have the ability to call him by that. Everyone has to get off of work some time. You can't always be "on the job."

Just stuff to keep in mind if you do get a nice chance to speak with him one on one. You want to make someone feel comfortable especially someone who you admire, then they'll be more open to you.

In response, I guess I wasn't being a spaz when I said "How's it going Charles." Probably in the same discreet manner as you did. But how will you ever get to talk to him if you don't take the initiative? Even so, no matter what happens...he might remember you for a couple days, but that's about it. So, the point of trying to meet him is not building a lasting friendship. And, no matter how we try to deny it, FB is a celebrity. His not knowing your name is different than you or I not knowing someone's name. So, I doubt he's flustered by the situation.

I just think that he has his circle of friends that will not grow.
Meeting him is just for our pleasure. We would all like to think we would act the same around celebrities, but we don't.

I didn't intend this to be a downer subject.

i got to talk to him after the fb&c's show in winnipeg last year. he was very funny and down to earth. he signed some of my cd covers and let us take a few photos. i thought it was pretty cool that after a kick ass show, and he was probably exhausted, he took some time to talk to some of the fans.

ive never met 'the big guy' himself, but i did get to meet and greet mr rich gilbert and mr dave phillips in shepherd's bush last year. that was cool. i cant remember what i said to Rich. i dont think i knew where to start! he really is a one man show. i must've shook his hand about 4 times.
anyway i got them both to sign my BLD insert and ticket. nice guys.
i really hope the catholics carry on after the reunion, i'd like to meet them again sometime. if not then i hope they do something that brings them over this side of the atlantic often enough for me to get a former catholics fix of them. especially for rich's dancing!

i got my photos back from that gig recently actually, i'll have to scan a few through and post them up. i got a good shot or two of Rich posing to the audience.

I met him in San Francisco at an in store. I got insanely nervous, so I'm sure I sounded like a total ass. I told him that his music meant an incredible amount to me, and if not for the inspiration I'd gotten from him I would never have begun playing music, ect, ect. He was very nice, but I knew by the look on his face I had made a fool of myself. Oh well.

I met him once, and he was so nice. We talked about classical music and Rimsky-Korsakov for a moment. It really pays to wait to approach him until he's not busy.

At one of his solo shows, I yelled out my request (Valentine & Garuda) and he thanked me and told the story of Valentine & looked at me and said "she's with me". I didn't need to "meet him" after that - it was way more than enough.

I didn't tell it here cause I was pretty sure I had bored everyone with it enough by now.

I had a pretty awesome experience with the guy. I got to work for him for two shows doing some merchandise and roadie work. Got to do some small talk with him and the rest of the band. Then the second night after the show he came out from hiding and walked up to me, arms outstretched and said "Dietr!" I thought this was odd, since I never introduced myself to him. I guess Dave or Scott mentioned me. Anywho, he continued repeating my name about ten times or so. He seemed to really like the name I guess. He asked if it was real and I said it was, and that it was short for Dietrich. But my stage name in my band was David Y. Otto. He then spent the next fifteen minutes telling me how I should stick with "Dietr," because it was a catchy name. Rich joined in on the conversation for ten minutes or so, too. I was terribly flattered to have Frank and Rich investing so much time into my stage name. It was also neat because by the end of the evening we were on a first/real name basis and got to hang out a bit. Got some good pictures and they gave me a free shirt. Needless to say, I dropped my stage name of seven years that instant and have gone by Mr. Dietr ever since. So if you read this, Mr. Black, thanks! I like it much better. I've met him and other fellows in the band a couple times since. Very, very surreal.

In a follow up, the first time I met him was rather strange, too. During the show (at which I was front and center) I was a few feet from Frank. Standing next to me was a short figure wearing a hooded sweatshirt, so I could not see his/her face. After the show, on my way out I saw this hooded figure talking to my friend Marty by the front door. (Marty Nedich played bass in the Kelley Deal 6000, one of the coolest guys you'll ever meet) The hooded figure left as I was approaching Marty. As I got to him he asked "So did you get to talk to Kim?" Yeah. You can guess who was standing next to me the whole show. And I had to say "No, Marty. I didn't talk to Kim." But I met Frank afterwards. This was in the fall of '98.

I met him at an in-store in Philadelphia back in November 2002, but I didn't really converse with him or anything. I got him to sign a poster, and shook his hand. I tend to be quite nervous around celebrities, not that I've met that many.

I met him during the doolittle tour and smoked pot with him (he no longer smokes). I walked on the tour bus and there in the front was joey, and I believe Kim. We chatted for a bit. But all the time there was this REALLY loud classical music coming from the back of the tour bus. We went to check it out, opened the door (and were almost knocked out by the waft of hash smoke) and there was mon signiore himself. Just listening to i believe it was Mozart. Charles had the best grin on his face. I am fortunate enough to be able to keep a "I'll see you when Im on tour" relationship with him since that day. Hes even dedicated some songs to me when he is playing and we usually have dinner before the shows. He is a connoisseur of fine wine food. One of the nicest people I know who has always been nothing but a down to earth "rock-idle" kina guy. Very intelligent and quite a wit. It is a pleasure to say I know Charles Thompson

I like this thread. Met him once after the Batofar show in Paris last year, and as I didn't know what to say I decided to lie and said "Hi, I'm a member of the fb.net web team". Which I'm not really (though I updated the tour dates section last week). Huhuh. Anyway I thanked him for having mentioned frankblack.net in an interview earlier that week, and he said "Well tell everyone I say hello" and shook my hand.

My first encounter was just a near encounter and kind of strange in hindsight. (I’ve actually told this story before) Back in the day, my friend said go buy this double cd import by a local band called the Pixies. You’ll love it. So, I went down to Newbury Comics in Harvard Square, grabbed Come On Pilgrim/Surfer Rosa, and waited in line to buy it. When I got to the counter, the sales guy gave me a look, looked over to the door, and back to me a few times. He asked if I was a Pixies fan and I said I really didn’t know much about them. He then told me that the lead singer was just standing in front of me in line. His name is Black Francis. I was like “oh.” He said, “you’ll like this album.” “ok.” Little did I know how that cd would change the way I enjoy music.

I’ve also said hello to him a couple of times. The best was last May at Zuzu in Cambridge, MA when he straddled up to the bar next to me during a break and ordered a single malt scotch. Asked how I was doing and then had a conversation with a guy I was sitting with about Frank’s cousin (who the guy knew). It was cool because, although I was too nervous to say anything (and had nothing to add to the conversation) nonetheless, I was part of a conversation with the man.
