Ok, this topic is meant to be a petition for people to "sign"(reply) to show Frank there are many people interested in hearing the Trompe Le Monde "alternate mix". (this coming after Frank saying in an interview that the Pixies unreleased material was depleted with the release of the Purple Tape cd. No way!) If you haven't heard, an alternate mix / early recording of Trompe Le Monde, the final Pixies album, is known to exist. No fan has it, except for one who isn't sharing (and now claims to have lost his copy).. but you can check the bottom of this page for 3 samples: http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/pinter/1251/sound.html There're alternate versions of "Bird Dream" and "Palace of the Brine", as well as a recording of "Brackish Boy".. and that's just the 3 known tracks. There are many other tracks as well, supposedly featuring more Kim vocals than the album versions, and perhaps even an early version of "Surf Epic". So if you'd like to see this recording officially released, reply below. Hopefully Frank and/or 4AD (whoever owns the rights) will see this and get the ball rolling. Thanks! |

Yes, I want to hear them. But what I really want to hear is, Catholic-Bloopers. Since they are recording live, they must have some alternate takes, and maybe some funny mistakes, as a fan I want to hear those things. Who's with me?

I'd think 4ad would own the rights, as it would be while the Pixies were signed... but I'm not aware of them being anywhere obvious... you never know though - there's a pretty huge archiving going on for all the Beggars Group labels at the moment...
I wouldn't do a petition, but maybe register on the 4ad boards - backcat check there a lot (4ad never go there) so they'd be able to help out more possibly? the forum url is www.beggars.com/forum

"aww damnit i just spilled beer all over the amp" ?!?!?!?!!? you and i and everyone all konw the whole band records direct with a amp modeling device, and may i remind you that many of these devices like the line 6 pod claim to be bullet proof, thus i imagine they are also beer proof.

but Coors is the silver bullet, and if the pod is anything like a werewolf, we're in for trouble. |

Woah, they don't record with real amps? That totally blows me away. They're so very hardcore about old school live to 2 track, yet they use amp modeling devices? Hipocrits! ;) |

haha nah im sure they use real amps since amp modeleing generally isnt very useful ive found, other then making convenient demos (in which case it is very useful). those sweet vox amps have to be used for something

hmm - as the forum mom i shouldn't be encouraging off-topic discussion..but..
My problem with amp modelers (i've got both the guitar and bass POD) is they've got 16bit outputs, and most likely crappy AD-DA converters.. I believe they're 32bit internally, but what's the use when it's popped back out at 16bit (or less)?
I got some surprisingly good tones out of my Fender Princeton Chorus headphone jack.. ;)

I dont know about beating the snot out of anyone, but you must admit, at least we know that the guy wasnt in on it for money or exploiting by bootlegs and stuff like that. I mean, I am sure if he was a real dick, he would have at least charged someone, anyone $20- $30 bucks for a copy, or a bootleg of these alt mixes would already exist. I will admit, I emailed the guy a few days ago, and I havent gotten a response. But I will keep you folks posted. |

Yeah, the clip of Brackish Boy sounds really cool, and I believe Surf Epic is on those tapes too. I would kill everybody on this board* for a full copy of that stuff!

again, off topic, but at a chicago show a while back some ass threw a cup of beer at frank in the middle of gouge away. it got all over his guitar. the nerve, i tell you.
and, trompe being my favorite pixies album, i really want to hear these alternate mixes.

I think the only guy who has these takes outside of anyone who was involved with the record is this cat in Los Angeles I have been messaging name Johnny Malta. Last I heard from him was that he couldnt find the tapes, he said that they either got lost or are in some box in some garage/storage in los angeles, he said he has moved about 5 times since he last listened to the tapes. He did say he would keep looking, and if he finds them he would then ask Frank Black(if he gets a chance to approach him about it at a FB show) if it was cool if he bootlegged it and distributed it to someone here who would be able to put it up for everyone to download/listen or he would return them to their rightful owner. Thats all I know. I havent heard from him since last week. |

Mike - we live in LA. maybe we should just go "persuade" him to give us the tapes. if you know what i mean.
you've seen Goodfellas haven't you?
these tapes are becoming like the Holy Grail or something.. |

Like I said, I havent heard from him in a week. Last he said is that he couldnt find them. I dont think kicking his ass would help him locate them if they are lost. |

The sad thing is that if J. Malta has the only left copy of these recordings and if they really are lost somewhere in a garage, everyday they loose some sound quality (humidity, heat, cold ... can alter the sound). It is very sad.

Yeah, he said something about having them on a DAT and that he should have transfered it to a 1/2 inch analog(he said that analog is archivable)and just stored it. then maybe they wouldnt have gotten lost. |

It's sadder that you guys are still talking about this.
I've been an on-and-off subscriber to the AP list for a few years and I remember the Johnny Malta debacle. It was one of the things that made me unsubscribe the first time. He had stooped to posing as some girl on the list who went out on a "date" with Malta, "heard" the "tape", and then shrilly defended him (himself) against the list's trash talk in response to an old trade that Malta didn't hold up his end of. Pretending to be this girl was just another tactic of Malta's to rub it in that he wasn't going to trade with anyone.
It was one of the saddest things I've ever seen on the internet (the fact that I still remember it may be the 2nd saddest thing) and because of that I wouldn't believe a single word that guy says.
He's a disturbed, insecure loser. Don't deal with him. Screw the "alternate Trompe mixes". There's a world of good music out there, folks. Get yourself some Downliners Sect or something. |

OliverK, you know what might even be worse than all that is in a message he sent to MikeW, he tried to blow off his involvement on the AP by saying "oh yeah, my brother used to post under my name" or something to that effect. Right. I guess his brother also recorded those FB covers with alternate lyrics to poke fun at Jeremy (i remember Solid Gold, Pie In The Sky, and Czar...that might be it). |

I hate to plug the guy (Johnny Malta) who has (had?) the recording.. but his band has a couple shows coming up, so if anyone in the L.A. area wants to confront him in person, you might check them out. Malta is the husky singer/guitarist. Name of the band: the Blips * reggae lounge, pasadena, thursday 11/07 * mr.t's bowl, sat 11/09 website: http://www.losblips.com/ |

"listen maltey, don't try any funny business either.. we're serious about those TAPES!!" |

Wow Switchy, very good investigative work, I didnt even know that and I got emails from the guy. I knew he had a yahoo profile, but you got the whole enchilada, or taco just to stay on the FB subject of things. Hahaha, the Reggae Lounge is just south of me on Fair Oaks, maybe I will go, but I dont think I am into lynching(persuading) the guy or anything like that, but I will watch the mob. But club wise, Mr T's is a cool venue. I may go tonite to watch a band called Go Betty Go, so if anyone in the LA area wants to meet up? email me. |

Hey guys, I checked out that link. Cool website. I may just go to one of those shows. If any of you are going, email me and let me know. Did anyone else go to the webpage? I wanna know what kinda guitar Johnny is wearing, one of em is a telecaster but the other one, it looks like a Jazzmaster, but its not,.... different pickups and headstock, maybe just a jazzmaster know off, huh? Anyway, Floop if you read this before 9pm, I will be at Mr T's tonite, Go Betty Go is playing.
