Hey people, just out of curiosity, are any of you LA ppl going to the johnny malta show,... or his band Los Blips show? There are 2 coming up next week and I may just go to one. I am not gonna beat anyone up though. I am just curious to see what kind of music Frank fans play. Anyway, if any of you are going let me know, I would love to meet up with other Frank fans from here. Oh and Floop, maybe we can get some tacos after the show! If you need the dates and addresses go to www.losblips.com , i think the info section has that "info", duh! |

Am I alone on this issue by thinking this guy should be left alone? Not to stir waves or make any enemies, but to confront him in person---or, worse yet, to threaten him in person---strikes me as a little unreasonable. This Trompe controvesy has been circulating for more than a year now, and I think it's about time someone said: if he doesn't want to give up the tape/s, then too bad. That's his business, right? End of story, really... |

Well I went to the Reggae Lounge last night to see J Malta's band Los Blips. They were very good. They definately rocked. The band before them had a nice set but the tempo was slow. Enter the Blips, aggressive music and vocals, they woke everyone up! Cool thing about the show was they were playing FB. Vanishing Spies and Speedy Marie were playing before the band went up. I talked to everyone on the band,... they are all very nice people, very humble. The drummer, haha, she is pretty cute. They all mentioned that last night was their first show. They even had a cd for sale. Anyway, after watching them take their gear down I was able to talk to Johnny. I told him who I was and he smiled and said "hey, thanks for coming down, I didnt think I mentioned to you that I played in a band". I told him that he didnt. Anyway, I asked him if there was any luck with the tapes and he said, "no, but if and when I do find them, you will be the first to know". Anyway, I congratualted them on a great set and told him that I really liked the band. He said, "thanks Mike, check out our website,... we have more shows this weekend. Oh yeah, here is some driving material". He gave me a cd of the band. I have not listened to it though. Over all impression: Nice ppl those Blips. Great music. Definately one of if not the best local bands I have seen this year. Highly recomended. |

Hey Matt, out of curisoity, did you post the Blips(Malta's Band) message board saying something about concrete shoes, if you dont have the tapes on Feb. 13th???? Because it was signed Don Corleone and I remembered someone posting with that here and it was you. No big deal if you did, I dont care, I was just curious if it was someone here.

I HOPE THEY Release TROMPE LE MONDE re-arranged by Phil Spector. I heard he arranged it with more strings and keyboards. I hope it sees the light of day soon. Let's petition 4ad to release it!

That sounds pretty damn cool. I didnt hear about that. However, I know where J Malta got the lost tapes. He said he use to work for Master Control Recording in Burbank. That is where the Pixies did Bossanova and Trompe. One day, he was cleaning out the tape locker and found a box that said Pixies Mix Notes. The tapes were in there along with other stuff. Like the tracking sheets for Bossanova and some for Trompe, scribbled lyrics for songs with the titles "Yell", "Grand Canyon", "Surfer", "Hang Fire", "Led Zeppelin Song #1, 2 & 3", did you guys know that Black Francis plays a 6 string bass on "Is She Wierd"? Also, guitar picks orange and green ones. Some posters were found in some other storage area of the studio, there was otehr stuff, but I cant recall. Anyway, that explains how he got them and why he is prolly one of the only few with the mixes. His guess was the Pixies mixed it at Master Control went to Europe to tour and just decided to remix it at the Blackwing in London(I read that in an interview w/ Kim Deal and she mentioned that). |

that's great info Mike!
And indeed,
In an interview Charles mentions something like Zepp Song 1 and 2 as working titles for Trompe Le Monde
Great research!

Hey, I went to the Blips(Malta's Band) show last night at the Rainbow. great show. I asked about his findings and if he had any other stuff. He said that Master Control was sold by the original owner like 2 years ago and when the original owner sold he called him and gave him the Pixies' Bossanova Gold Record that hung on the walls of that studio for years. He says that it commemorates the sales of over 200,000 records sold or something like that. The tapes are lost but he says that as far as memorabilia goes, thats his prized possesion. |

Hmm? Hey, I never even thought about that. Yeah, I guess he does have a white telecaster. I have seen the Blips like 3 times and I have seen him use it twice. He usually has this sunburst tele and a sunburst jazmaster copy, but indeed he does have a white tele. I dont think I have seen him with a flannel though(does anyone wear flannels still?)

As for the tunes on the site that you downloaded. I dont know,...I "think" you can hear the influence on the song "Scary Things". But then, maybe its just because I know they are influenced by the Pixies and it kinda influences my thought.

Don't think I used it right, but gait kinda means "size". Kinda. Meh. He actually looks like El Hefe from NOFX in a few of those pics.
Yeah, Scary Things was a little "Pixiesish", although the bassline intro sounded more like the riff to Even In His Youth by Nirvana.. |

Haha. I never thought of that(him looking like el hefe), thats pretty funny. Well, regardless of what it sounds like, if you like it, thats cool. Because really, there are alot of shit-bands here in LA, ppl still trying to find an image and shit like that. These cats arent like that. They crank out cool music and dont have an attitude and dont seem to be fronting an image. They are my favorite LA band.

not true! One of my friends was recording the other day, and his went 'poof' in a cloud of white smoke. (no joke!)
Of course, this MAY have something to do with him plugging it in with the wrong power supply.... |

After browsing the three selections on http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/pinter/1251/sound.html... that cut of Bird Dream isn't impressive, but the end of Brine is interesting, and the different take on Brackish is just STUNNING. It's made me connect some dots with the first solo record and the last Pixies record. Thanks for the link! |

I think the Bird version is cool. It just goes to show that maybe there were more Kim vocals thru out the record. The production wasnt as polished. |

So what's the story with these mix tapes? Does Johnny Malta have them and can't find them? Does he have them but just doesn't want to release them? Or is the whole thing a product of fertile imaginations? Surely if he's got the tapes, there's a legal responibility to share, like when you find dubloons when you're metal detecting you have to declare them to the police.
Don't know why I care about this, I like Trompe le Monde just the way it is.

Forget about Johnny Malta, somebody else, more official, has got to have these! The vaults of 4AD? Frank? Lovering? Come on! It pisses me off to hear them say "Everything's been released already" when it obviously hasn't been. (And there's still a half hour or so of great Peel sessions they inexplicably left off that official "BBC" CD.)
But damn it.. they COULD have done a swanky Deluxe Edition type, double disc, give-the-props-it-deserves reissue of Trompe.. including the remastered LP, these fabled "Lost Trompe Tapes", the b-sides and rare tracks from that era, and still probably had enough room for a short live show (bootleg collectors would agree the kick-ass 12/22/91 L.A. "Gone To Heaven" boot would be a perfect addition to the officially-released realm.)
..You know?, like that recent Pavement "Slanted & Enchanted" reissue? That shit's sweet! If only 4AD could be as cool as Matador. (no offense, Jo!) I guess we'll just have to keep hoping it comes out someday. Perhaps for a 25th Anniversary Special Edition?.. 2016 is just around the corner.
And hell, the same could be done for EVERY Pixies album. I know for a near-fact that there are similar "lost tapes" for each album, it's just the Trompe ones that get talked about most. Doolittle demos have been widely bootlegged for years. A couple have even been officially released on 7" vinyl during DttP era.. so 4AD obviously knows about them. Those would go great as bonus tracks on a Doolittle reissue CD.. all nice and cleaned up. I've heard rumors of lots of Bossanova alts/outtakes as well. Damn it, let's get this stuff out!
well, it's been fun ranting. :) thanks, The Switch |

Accordin to Malta, he lost the the "lost tapes". They did exist indeed. There is a link to someones sight that Johnny emailed "blips" of some of the out takes to, I dont know the sight though. But it has Brackish Boy, Palace of the Brine and Olympus Mons out takes. I am sure that someone else on here has that addy. I agree, I am sure that someone else has these too.

Yeah, the site with the clips is linked 2 or 3 times in this very topic! Last night at the Frank show, during Lovering's Pixies questions, I asked, "Don't you think it sucks the Pixies albums are being reissued with no bonus tracks?" (yeah, maybe i paniced a bit.) He just dismissed it saying, "I think we shot our load.. but there is a DVD coming out soon." In hindsight I should've been more specific.. like, "Besides the Pixies' version of 'Brackish Boy', what other cool unreleased stuff is there?" oh well. |
