It's a sporting event, and a grand public spectacle. You can't truly understand without having experienced it.
Now then, having said that: Who here from the USA truly understands cricket as a sport? Or Australian rules football? Or soccer for that matter? Can you imagine the response if someone started a similarly titled thread but instead of regarding American football it was about one of these distinctly non-american sports? I'm sure that posters would be very harsh in their critism and accuse the thread starter of ignorance. I understand the curiousity expressed by those in this thread, but really what's the big deal? It's a sport that many Americans themselves do not understand.
I personally have never been to a professional football game and never intend to go, but I like to occasionally watch one on TV. I'm from Wisconsin so I like to know whether the Packers won or not. I root for them, but I am not a football enthusiast in general. I'm kind of like that with all sports.
How do people endure the grueling event? As has been explained already: it's a party. You eat, drink and socialize. The commercials? Well, my friends, one of the greatest achievements of our civilization is advertising, and the lucky corporations that can afford the unbelieveably high price to advertise during the superbowl bring out their absolute best commercials to play them then. And truly, it doesn't depend on your political leanings a single bit. An entertaining little thirty second or sixty or ninety second film is an entertaining little film, regardless of whether it's an ad or not.
I personally do not plan on watching the superbowl. The only superbowls I've watched in my life were the two that the Packers were in in the 90s. And I was stoned for both of those, so I don't remember much.
Now then, after the suberbowl CBS is premiering their Survivor: AllStars series. I am totally there. -- "What's all I listen to? It's all freedom rock!" |

Hey glaish, do you have trouble talking to guys too? hehe, I mean I can talk to (who I consider to be) level headed guys but I'm extremely akward around macho, sports loving, hootin' and hollerin' guys. There's just no connection for me.

My prediction: I won't watch it.
Yes, this is a pointless post made entirely so I can get my third cat. What's wrong with that?

Carolina will have too many turnovers.
I will tape it with my Tivo and start watching after it has been going for about hour and skip over all of the delays, like half time and instant replay reviews. |

I want a tivo so bad! How many hours of TV can you save and is it easy to transfer it to tape or even burn the shows later?

Hours on the hard drive depends on the set up and even depends on the show. I don't know why but sports or things with action take up more hard drive space. Ours is approximately 90 hours and we have a load of movies we taped from a few free months of HBO and Cinemax. I can move taped programs to VHS pretty easily by playying it and taping it while it plays. I can't move it to a DVD, but I think some tuners allow it.
It is great. Sports are so much shorter and you no longer have to watch commercials. And you no longer have hurt for blank tapes. We rarely watch anything live anymore. |

My opinion is that American Sport is crap to watch on T.V. but if you are actually there then the atmosphere of a game is outstanding. Ive been to a couple of baseball matches, which were fantastic but on tv baseball is more boring than cricket. I'd love to go to an American football match, if only to druil at the cheerleaders.
Watching a game live, and on t.v. are completely different. In fact I'd love to watch the most boring sport of all time (cricket) live just so I can sit in the sun, drink loads and abuse the opposing team.
Who's the man that won't cop out when there's danger all about? |

Ok so I'm working right now at that little recreational center sitting off to the side of the TV and everytime NE does something good the pack of fans screams (MA school). It scares me half to death! I think I'm going to have heart failure before the game is over.

Remember when Frank Black did an online Q&A with we fans on superbowl sunday the year when the Baltimore Raven won and I drove 5 hours to a cancelled show. The only show on the whole US tour that year and I missed it due to Fb's illness.
That was awesome (Chris Farely, American)
And I had tickets to the night after Philly

that was a good game. I was routing for the Panthers. I'm from North Carolina, but I'm not really a fan. Just route-route-routing for the home team. They didn't win. It's a shame.

On the Tivo. We don't actually have a Tivo. It's a PVR (sometimes called a DVR) thorough our dish company (Dish Network). It's the same idea as Tivo, but the software may not be quite as good. It doesn't learn your preferences like Tivo does. Tivo will tape shows just based on what it thinks you like. My parents got Tivo this xmas and I actually prefer our setup, because it has a 30 sec button lets you quickly skip through commercials and huddles.
We got the hardware for free and we pay a monthly charge of $5.99. A great deal. I love the thing. Like tonight, 4 minutes left in the game. I paused it, went and got my daughter's shower going, and then finished watching the game. Conflict avoided. It's a sweet luxury. |

I think it's probably a publicity stunt because Janet "with any luck I'll be on season 3 of the Surreal Life" Jackson has an album coming out soon and needs any publicity she can get

You're right. it's sick, the pandering of these people who are supposed to be so brilliant and genius. They can't rise above flashing a tit like a common stripper.
It just goes to prove that the day of the celebrity is fast coming to a close. With the glut of "reality" TV, the ease of creating films and music on your own home computer, people are waking up to the fact that these people are no better than anyone else and as Sly put it, "Everybody is a Star."
Besides, I saw the Paris Hilton sex video. What was the big damn deal? She didn't do anything different than anyone else does when they dance the horizontal mambo. Yeah, she videoed it. But, who hasn't had an entire film crew, financiers, tables full of coke and various exotic animals in the room (for atmosphere) when they are doing it?
Um, you know...er |

sadly, I have to disagree with you about the day of the celebrity coming to a close. It's just that now people are able to become celebrities for doing absolutely nothing. Paris Hilton is a perfect example. She's famous for nothing more than being rich (and not because she earned the money herself), partying, and being a total slut. And not even an attractive one in my opinion. I've seen a few vidcaps from her video. I reminded me of newscasts from Iraq in the middle of the night. You'd think with it being in a hotel room they could jsut turn on the lights. Dumbasses
