Hey, you floop!
You should come over here, to France. We have a magazine, called Les Cahiers du Cinéma. They think everything is crap. It's not like my favorite movie is Jurassic Park or something. I really found this movie very simple - it didn't make my brain move fast like Eraserhead did, for instance, neither was I amazed by the artistic identity of the movie, like in Eisenstein's movies. But it was really a pleasure watching it. Probably unimportant in the history of cinema. So it's not really a question of the movie being "rated", it's the satisfaction it brought me.

that's funny. yeah, i'm familiar with the Cashiers du Cinema. maybe i should write for them because i do have pretty picky tastes.. i can admit that i'm kind of a snob sometimes when it comes to film, but i'm really not either. i can enjoy a total Hollywood movie or stupid comedy just as much... i just think that LOST IN TRANSLATION is, like i said, "slightly" overrated. Bill Murray is great, the cinematography is beautiful, the whole pacing of the film works with the theme but.. it's also kind of boring.
i felt my mind wandering during the film ..
i think Sophia Coppola has talent, but the film still felt semi-unsure of itself to me. i know what she was going for but, for me, i don't know if she pulled it off. and i don't know if it's "best picture".. but then, 2003 was so embarassingly horrible, i suppose it might have been best picture (for me, i'd say BIG FISH or SECRET THINGS were the best films i saw)..
regardless of what i say, LOST IN TRANSLATION has, by far, the best opening shot of any movie i've ever seen. |

| I sorta agree with you. Lost In Translation was the best film I saw last year, but I think that speaks as much to the weak field as it does to the superiority of that one movie. |

I don't care what you buzzkills say. I lurved Lost In Translation. And was very happy Bill Murray won as well. I think he has a very low 'bullshit factor' which seems rare in Hollyweird.

The movie wasn't meant to be mindblowing or anything, at least I don't think. It's a painting. Two people trapped in cages of their own making, surrounded by people they cannot communicate or connect with in any meaningful way. I could see this being a Salvador Dali painting, as a matter of fact...
The brilliance of this movie was that it was real. You could feel the isolation, the drudgery, and thus the spark - the one real thing in their lives was this stranger with whom they were finally able to connect with. Because the acting was brilliant (way to go, Bill), the dialogue and screenplay were well written, and the setting was well depicted. These must surely be the signs of a good movie, and though I'll be the first to say I've seen better, it has been a long time since I've seen one in theatres. Give them a globe for it.
And I don't want to ruin the end, but it was so aHollywood it was beautiful. Anyone who has ever lived in this wonderful place we call reality can identify with the ending because THIS is what really happens. I'm so tired of, well, the Hollywood ending to things, it just doesn't ring true in any way for me.

I was soooo unhappy with the ending that I imagined myself that they will perhaps call each other once they are back home, get divorced and live together a long and happy life. But this ending would really suck!

Why else would he have come back? He whispers in her ear and they smile and part ways a second time. you mean to tell me that he ran after her after already saying goodbye just to say goodbye again? I don't think so. He's famous; all he had to tell her was "find me" and she would be able to.

don't get me wong, i enjoyed the film. i just think it's a tad overblown, and partially due to the lack of good films in 2003. some people talk about it like it was mindblowing.. that was my point.
i'm happy to see a film like this get attention though, in a sea of formulaic Hollywood shlock.
i just don't get people talking about it like it's the best film they've ever seen.
if you're curious, Wong Kar-Wai's IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (which came out a few years ago) seems like a pretty big influence on her film. among others.. i don't know if i'd compare it to Dali.. it reminds me more of the photographs of a particular photographer who i can't think of right now.. but nothing in LOST IN TRANSLATION seems really "surreal" to me. dreamy, but not surreal. |

Yeah, I think we all had a big discussion on surreal/dreamy and what exactly Lost is back when this came out... interestingly, I think I was one of the people agreeing with you that it was more dreamy and detached than surreal. I wonder what this means for humanity...

How great is it that Bill Murray was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar?? I'm so happy for him. He was so great in those Wes Anderson flicks. I'm ashamed that I haven't yet seen Lost in Translation but I look forward to it, having seen Virgin Suicides and liking it. Good for Sophia for being nominated for Best Director and Screenplay, too. I'm proud of them both.

I've just seen this film and its absolutely great. Bill Murry is a god and it would be criminal if he didn't win an oscar.
Japan looked fantastic, i really want to go although after i've forked out for the Pixies reunion i might have to wait awhile. |

The goodbye they had in the hotel was so unsubstantial, it was barely anything. I think he went after her to say something meaningful and something that would be important to them both.

I was meaning to find the topic for this last night after I watched the film. Again I think I was waiting to see something so much more than I did. The bit where they went out on the town made me feel really weird, as though I was there and enjoying this ace holiday. But the rest bored me, their friendship doesn't seem warranted to me. The bit with the singer felt thrown in, felt like it would have been so much better as a book, things moved to fast for it to feel right. The ending was one of those, oh no you better not fucking finish, you better hope thats just a fade out. FUCK! Where's that bitch? kinda endings.
Having said all this Bill Murray is indeed godlike and should win the oscar.

Floop, you nailed it. There is so much time and energy wasted in that film. Sure, it's good, and I can totally appreciate it when someone makes a film and attempts to be legitimatly different. Operation unsuccessful. Way too much filler in this film. I think if you were to take out all of the scenes that really didn't hold up the story, nor were they clever enough to stand on their own based on clever dialog or whatever, that you'd have about a half an hour left. A for effort, D for execution. I lost count of the scenes in the film that were there strictly to magnify the "lost in translation" metaphor. The film that comes to mind, that I thought was in a similar vein, but blew this away was Punch Drunk Love. I wanted so bad to hate that movie, but upon hearing about ten minutes of the amazingly original dialog, I couldn't stop watching it. The dialog alone was so interesting right off the bat, that it could have carried the film alone. "Semi unsure of itself" nails it Floop. Good work...some films don't seem like they know what they're trying to accomplish. This one seemed completely confused. Sucky sucky overrated. Sofia is NOT her father. Same as Kelly Lynch is not her father either.

They were both in Ghost World. That probably has a lot to do with it. Thora Birch is hot hot hot. End of story. I would have her babies, and Im a guy, so that says a lot.

So this movie is apparently based on Sofia's life, I thought. I wonder who the actor was that reached out to her, if it even was an actor. I watched the making of featurette on the DVD and she seemed so excited when Bill Murray was about to arrive that it made me think possibly he was actually the guy that she had had the experience with in real life. Just an observation that probably holds no merit but figure I'd put it out there.

the whole great thing about the ending is that it ends the way YOU want it to - thats why you can't hear the whisper, so you can write your own ending. i thought that was pretty obvious...

after this film i had a Scarlett Johannson crush for a little while. i think she's really cute. not conventionally attractive, but i like her vibe.
but now i'm back on my usual Jennifer Connelly thing.
here's a good picture of Scarlett though:
as an aside - i heard a rumor somewhere that Scarlett and Bill Murray did NOT get along during shooting at all. more to the effect that he didn't like her.. if true, it's just further testament to Bill Murray's acting genius. |

Scarlett looks like a little red X there - I've seen her look much better. 
Also, I saw Bill Murray on the Today show and he kinda dissed her. He's on the Late Show in a few minutes, I'm looking forward to seeing him and Dave. Two funny funny men. Good times.

And it hurts. Sorry. At least you bust your foot over the limit on gin, over the limit on speed. She just stubbed her toe. Nice toe, though.
And I sang a Pistols song in a private Karaoke joint when we were in Tokyo. God, that was so much fun. Mine was Pretty Vacant though. And the video that was playing in time to the tune, showing the words, featured a young woman knitting on a park bench!
We had so much fun on that trip. We just seemed to be in Tokyo for ever, in a fancy hotel. I think because there was press to do. But it didn't seem like we were doing anything. I loved it. I don't want to go back. At least not right now. I feel the way the girl in the film feels when she says:-
"Let's never come here again because it would never be so much fun.."
She might have meant it, she might not have, but I feel like that. Fuck it. I can't sing. I'm still coughing like a consumptive. I'm wondering if this is a sign. Telling me to take some time off to do something else. I mean, Japan's not going to be the same this time. I wanted to go back and do outdoor shows on Sunday afternoons to four generation Japanese families. I wanted to do a Bowlie in the land of the one true Bowlie! May as well give them what they want."

Continuing the conversation from the last thread, I'd have to agree with benji. All the hype kinda ruined the movie for me in a way. I was expecting a terrific movie but it was somewhat unsettling. There wasn't much happening throughout the movie. Not a ton of dialog or interaction...the story didn't play itself very well. It didn't seem to climax anywhere. There was no buildup. But it is an enjoyable film. Yes, very much a "mood" movie...very relaxing.
