Dog Gone. According to the man himself, it is about or inspired by the thought of a kind of alien virus brought to earth by a meteorite. If I remember correctly.
Into the white. Because everybody is flying blind here.
Man of steel. Because of loneliness and isolation.
At the end of the world. The line "The sun came up, less one ray" refers to one man having died, and overall the song somehow also expresses (at least to me) a feeling of surprise because of the unexpected death of this beloved man (John Candy). So I think in the context of the current situation, those elements (unexpected death of loved ones, everyday in the thousands) in juxtaposition with the fact the sun will not stop coming up every day poses a beautiful and terrible image at the same time.
