..are a thousand times better than the album songs themselves!!!
Seriously, I mean it.
Spontaneity. Urgency. Rocking. Quirkyness. Oddity. Sing-along. Fantastic sound. Joey's guitar, imaginative and not constrained. Frank's guitar sounding simple yet full. Thriving bass. Song structures you can really hear and remember. Good lyrics. Rawness and power.
In short, no producer watering it down to a "good-sounding" album which is intended to make everyone happy, or intended to sound interesting, or intended to make an impact. No intention at all, just good music as we know it from the man and his fellow musicians.
I'm convinced that is the album Frank is more happy about. If not, at least it is definitely the album I'm very happy about.

I’m going to get some going - I had to order a new rca to 1/4 stereo cable for my firepod. Should be here tomorrow.
Oh, and I disagree with the statement for the main topic here ;)

I like BTE very much (not all the songs). My only dislikes are mainly about production-sound issues (even if TD did a better job this time - and if I appreciate his role as a producer, he had good suggestions).
But like others here, I LOVE the demos. For all the reasons given by Two Reelers in the first post. They rock. Plain and simple. They're like a great FB record with the Pixies as his backing band. It's great.

You know, I absolutely love the demos, and today after listening to them a couple of times I feared I'd be disappointed with the actual album. After all we've been waiting for FB demos for what, 10 years now? Abbabubba was released in 2011. But I finally put on the album again, and they really go great together. Yeah it's more produced and Joey is less great on it, but the songwriting is great, the production isn't bad at all (I never thought it'd happen!) and with every listening I discover more things I hadn't noticed before. I love both the raw sound of BLD and the million ideas in the mix of TOTY. So I wouldn't say the demos are better than the album or vice versa. They really complement each other.

There's an easy listening quality to these demos. Even though I appreciate all of the effort that went into BTE, I think I'll inevitably listen to these demos quite a bit more. Especially the 4 song run from Dream to Marigold. WOW, are those 4 songs good or what??? Joey's got this warm cosmic sound. It's bananas!! |

In my view, there is not a single rock song on BTE. There are two potential rock songs (In the Arms and St. Nazaire), but both of them are just too long, drag out and lose momentum.
It was similiar with Head Carrier, but this at least had Bale's Back. But otherwise, both Dagelty albums are pop or "modern / slick ear-friendly softrock" albums, and devoid of any primal rock energy. Clean, nice, harmless.
That is what I'm grateful for those demos, which have some other flair. I also think in those demos you can hear a real tight band, which I lack on BTE. There, the songs sound more like a professional session band is performing the tracks for an unrelated songwriter. Directed by... the producer! Reminds me very much of what Jon Tiven did to Frank Black.
Okay, I will shut up now. After all, I'm just a guy living in a van...

Holy cow I disagree with pretty much all of this. Not that the demos aren’t good, but that they’re somehow some kind of state of perfection while BTE is a hot mess. Sorry I gotta chime in. The demos are good but come on seriously, you’re talking about them like they’re TOTY part II. and BTE is soft rock? I don’t know what album you’re listening to, but this ain’t Rumours. St. Nazaire is only “potentially” a rock song??? And it’s too long? It 2 and a half minutes. It’s your opinion of course and you’re welcome to it, I’m just baffled by your take on all this.
Sorry for breaking the thread rule

I'm toying with waiting a few months to listen to this so that I don't have to go through to bad of a FBF withdrawal between albums. Lots to chew on with BTE right now. |

Demoes are just growing and growing on me. Proper rock songs about girls and clubbing. Last two tracks are bangers, when I listen to them I imagine I'm at a Roadhouse in America drinking a beer and playing pool, and the Pixies are playing live on small stage and there's loads of slutty rock chicks with tattoos waving their hair about. |

Paz vocals on Under the marigold reminds me of Grand Duchy.
Can anyone post the conversation at the start of Chapel Hill ? "So she's friend with their manager" (?) "She says the..." (???)
Is that David & Paz ? It kind of sound like Dalgety's voice ?

This album really needs its own name. It doesn't really make send to call it the BtE demo because that would imply that it's demo versions of the BtE songs. I guess the boring thing would be to call it the 2018 Demo, but it'd be nice if it had a real name. |

The Eyrie (too obvious) The Rock Album The Passing (as it comes after the last song on BTE - Death Horizon) Beyond The Rim is my preference (Babylon 5 quote referencing dead characters) |

So I just took a long road trip (5 hours each way) and I listened to BTE twice and the demos twice on the way there and back.
Damn man...the demos just felt like the classic Frank traveling kind of music. Pixies album was really fun to listen to also, but these demos went so well with driving around, not just the words or melodies but the feel of it. Put me in such a great mood. These 9 songs truly are one of my favorite things Frank has ever released. I don't get why a new Pixies album can't just sound like this. I am like 10000% satisfied with these 9 songs as a collection and I don't need anything more production wise. All I want is maybe a few more songs to make it longer. |

These songs take me back to Devil's Workshop, and it's looser feel, as opposed to the more 'serious' tone of BLD.
This many songs, and going back and forth between the albums also remind me of that time, when you just felt spoiled.
Still can't get into 'Hey Debussy', but the other ones are great.
Joey's solo on 'Caught in a Dream'!! Just brilliant. |
