Will TOTY be given any kind of special recognition in 2019 after 25 years of being one of the best, if not THE best thing FBF has ever done?

Sadly, I am starting to think that other than a few articles in music magazines, websites, etc., almost nothing will be done to commemorate this amazing piece of music.

What does the forum think? Will something happen? Or is this all just so much Pie in the Sky?

Unfortunately, I highly doubt there will be a tour. Was just thinking the other day how I would love to see Lyle Workman, EDF and Nick Vincent, with maybe Dave McCaffery on Bass, do a Frank tour.

They could play the first solo record to the first Catholics album, which is a classic, too, as far as I am concerned. The man makes some damn fine self-titled releases.

Book it!!!

I think if they did some kind of special re-release they would make some money.

If that's even possible after all these years.

I would be much more likely to buy a commemorative TOTY album re-release than a Surfer Rosa one.

I realize that TOTY fanatics are way outnumbered by SR fanatics.

Maybe TOTY is better off buried in the sands than dug up.

I would love a re-release on vinyl. Can't find it for less than $120 on the internets.

I think it deserves to see the light of day. One of the best albums ever, not just for Frank. Easily on my Top Ten All Time albums. First Catholics album is up there, too.

I would give up a TOTY tour for a Catholics reunion tour. Maybe. Depending on the day of the week. I think.

TOTY is in my top 2 albums of all time list.

I would just hope FBF gets an opportunity (or TAKES an opportunity) to acknowledge it on its 25th next year.

I would really like it to get the accolades it deserves. It is my favorite album of all time. Saying top ten did not adequately convey how I feel about this album.

I remember seeing it at Borders right after it came out. I had no idea he had released anything.

Had to listen to it one half at a time to start, there was so much to take in. In typical fashion, I did quite a few “hmmm’s” before I said “fuck yeah!”.

The ability to put this on again and again is what sets it apart, to me.

I’m with you Moonruler.

Bought the cassette at Record Town and put it in the tape deck for the ride home.

Thought it was the craziest thing.

Definitely had some hmmmm moments too, especially with track 5.

Then eventually was like “this is the best thing ever!!!!” And listened to it a million times.

Threw the cassette out the window once cuz I was pissed.

I gave like 5 copies of it to people the first few years too.

I would buy copies whenever I would see one for years. Last time I did that was 2010 in some music store downtown.

Totally agree on track 5, but Lyle is a guitar god and Frank just keeps building as the song progresses. That won me over in the end. Took a long time. I had this on disc and would skip to the next song often.

There are definitely a few songs that had to grow on me a little bit more than others, but that helped the re-playability.

And a great guitar album. Both Lyle and Frank rock. Excellent production by EDF.

I long for solo Frank. Got to pay the bills, though.

Anyone know how much this sort of thing would cost to crowdfund like on Kickstarter?

I would be all for doing my part in a grassroots TOTY.... something.

Kickstarter, Petition dot come or something like that or whatever.

Maybe we organize some kind of sit in on the original release date, and when everybody sees us on the ground in front of City Hall wearing TOTY T-shirts, then Frank will show up and open with What Ever Happened To Pong?

Ok.

So, in light of the fact that I don't think anything official of any substance will likely occur, I have decided to produce a 25th Anniversary Tribute Album featuring various artists (of varying fame) covering TOTY in its entirety, from start to finish.

It will be available as a digital download, or as a limited-edition physical CD (containing exclusive bonus tracks and deluxe packaging).

This will be released at retail by the end of 2019.

Details / pre-orders to come near the end of this year.

Longue vie à l'adolescent de l'année!

I am interested in considering the bonus tracks on the Deluxe CD version as a possible outlet for exemplary fan recordings, a la the earlier FB.net releases.

So, in that way, it would essentially function as such, but allow truly impressive "amateur" submissions to exist as a companion piece alongside more established bands, on the same 2-disc set...

The Quietus review got me thinking:

If TOTY were the 5th Pixies album and Trompe were the first FB solo album (in an alternate universe) how would that suit you? Would you think of them any differently?

Dude, this Rolling Stone article just reminds you how crazy the 90s were.

Look at these 40 albums that all came out in 1994:

Sorry, for posting so much in a row.

In a perfect world, yes. But I am gonna give myself enough time to do it right.

This is a complex and expensive undertaking.

That's quite the project! Are you in a position to share which bands / artists may contribute to this?

Thanks, picpic.

I will definitely need it!

It was only after I decided to do this and announced it here on the board that I realized I had chosen perhaps the most technically tricky and musically complex collection of songs that FBF has recorded and released to try and convince folks to cover.

I will not be surprised if few or any of the artists who join the project attempt to replicate the TOTY arrangements, and instead rearrange them to suit their own skill level and/or instrumentation...

A bit. Not as much as I used to (or would like to).

It's a whole different world now.

That sounds like a really cool tribute!

Q: Where do Pixies keep their instruments when they're not playing?
A: Debasement.

Are you open to submissions for this project?

I do a lot of ambient/synthwave sort of music and it would be fun to try a cover of a song from Teenager of the Year.

Thanks

Haha Denis, I have been contemplating the right song for this since there aren't any tracks about a trip to Graceland. Hmmm... maybe an Aristotle Onassis impersonator for Thalassocracy?

So, the answer to the question raised by the OP (might have been me?) is: yes, there will be a TOTY 25th Anniversary thing, BUT, it will only be a rereleased vinyl.

Nothing else.

From bad wicked world to sad old world, this is truly depressing, but like most depression, you learn to live with it.

You mean, standard black vinyl reissue, not just the RSD ones? If there's a first album reissue with a better pressing than the RSD orange vinyl I'd love to get my hands on it.
