I thought this could be fun, interesting, and telling with regards to the Pixies 2.0 catalog. Now that we have two records and the RSD release (WoW) – and we’ve had a little time to digest HC – how about a game of Pixies 2.0 “survivor”? Below are the 25 tracks that the Pixies have released since re-launching their recording career. Call out which song you think should definitely go; I’ll tally the votes and put it on the chopping block after a week or so. In theory, we’ll end with 10-12 collectively solid tracks.
"All I Think About Now" "All the Saints"
"Andro Queen"
"Another Toe in the Ocean" "Baal's Back"
"Bagboy"
"Bel Esprit"
"Blue Eyed Hexe" "Classic Masher"
"Greens and Blues" "Head Carrier"
"Indie Cindy"
"Jaime Bravo" "Magdalena 318"
"Might as Well Be Gone" "Oona" "Plaster of Paris"
"Ring the Bell"
"Silver Snail"
"Snakes"
"Talent"
"Tenement Song" "Um Chagga Lagga" "What Goes Boom"
"Women of War" I’ll start with what I think is an easy one: “Another Toe”. After all this time, I’ve really never been able to get over it. It’s an easy pick (to my mind), but this will very likely get tougher as time passes. Let the voting begin now.

Skip: Bagboy Hexe Snail Snakes
All others are pleasant/good to my ears (including Toe ;-))

What's the format? Just one song we cancan choose or several?
Jaime (my pick if we've only one choice; just find it cringey tbh) Another Toe Snakes Silver Snail All I Think About Now (found it nice at first with the cool guitars but as someone pointed out the singing is off and has no discernable melody)
Was tempted to add both Talent and Tenement but both have been occasional earworms for me soto I'll let them off. |

Would chop Baal's Back from HC and What Goes Boom from IC.
But for this game I say Baal's Back goes first. |

Hey guys it's a Survivor game. You chose only one song, the one you like least.

I'm going with Another Toe as well. I don't think it's horrible, it's just kinda forgettable. |

The pre-chorus from Another Toe is awful, but I find the rest of the song to be ok/good.
I'll go with Blue Eyed Hexe, which I've never liked. It kind of just plods along, a mid-tempo song with nothing interesting to offer. And the screaming sounds forced and out of place. |

Women of War?? How would one get an MP3 of this song I've never heard of?
My vote would be for Baal's Back.
I have to say I am really shocked at what some people are picking though. |

Really odd to see all the thumbs down for Another Toe compared to the many thumbs up for Tenement Song. Same kind of song (to my ears) !
Like Hexe & Balls (with the (quote) "constipated Brian Jonhson" kind of scream ")

If you down-voted more than one song, I won't count your vote. Please pick one!
... really incredible to see such a wide-ranging selection of tracks. |

Please use Jaime Bravo from my list.
I get why some people prefer the live version of Baal's to the studio one but it's still a fine song in my opinion. The vocal is manipulated yeah but it still rocks and pisses over most of IC and HC. |

You could probably tell but please use Baal's Back for my first song not What Goes Boom.
At least with Toe you can sing along. It might sound like bad 90s generic rock but it's catchy. |

i really like Jaime Bravo. Like Indie Cindy (the song), it coule have been a bit shorter. But that's probably my favourite song on the record. Chord progression is brillant, and Joey lead is fantastic.
I just wanna know where allthe hate for this song (and Another Toe) comes from ? Lyrics, maybe ? I don't speak english and I don't understand /pay attention to the lyrics very well. I just listen to the music. And Jaime Bravo sounds really good (ignoring compression)

I think you and other members on this forum who's first language isn't English, communicate a lot better than some people I know whose first language is English! I have a lot of respect for that.
As for the hate for particular songs, it's really interesting how there's no consensus except for Another Toe it seems. I personally believe it's the intro, it's as subtle as a prostate exam. But the rest of the song is good/fine.
I have a ridiculous theory, pixies fans are so diverse - I would say my favourite genre of music is classic alternative (basically anything from Donovan to Dinosaur Jr).
I have friends who are into harder music, metal, punk etc - while I can admire some bands of this genre it's not something I listen to daily - and they hate Another Toe.
I think the Pixies attract fans from a wide spectrum of genres/styles and maybe that's why there's no common consensus - but I believe thats a great thing for a band to have.
While I personally like to be as eclectic as possible with what I listen to, for me it has to have some degree of palatability. That's why I found Baals Back challenging and why I can only listen to certain Pere Ubu albums every now and then!
Like I say, probably a ridiculous theory but just a thought!

I don't hate any of them, even Another Toe - J Bravo and WoW just suffer from coming out right at the end of that release cycle after all the fuss of the EPs, Kim D going, Kim S coming and going and then Paz joining etc. They never got played live to the best of my knowledge, I just haven't got the same attachment to them as the other stuff from that era. |

Blue Eyed Hexe! At the risk of being both unpopular and out of touch, Another Toe is the "Here Comes Your Man" of the album... you can't get rid of it!

Alright, I think It's time to put "Another Toe" on the cutting room floor (not surprisingly). Here are the down-vote totals for this round:
Another Toe (7) Bagboy (3) Blue Eyed Hexe (3) Ring the Bell (2) Baal's Back (2) Jaime (1) Snakes (1) Indie Cindy (1) Women of War (1) Silver Snail (1)
I think the next round will be tougher. Personally, I would love to see "Talent" get the ax. Down-vote away!

I'm down-voting Baal's Back again (is that how this works? or do I pick a different song this time?)
Also, Dean's point about Toe is valid I think. HCYM and Toe are things you would hear on the Muzak at the dentist's office.
This whole thread is actually reminding me (again) of how inferior IC is to their other albums (even HC).
I listen to the opening of Blue Eyed Hexe a lot, and then skip the rest of the song (once the singing starts). |
