These KD songs are always very charming in their quirkiness, but it's getting harder and harder to distinguish a great song from her from just an ok KD song with all the endearing quirk and cool she lends to everything she touches.
This one seems boring at first, but gets better and better after a couple of spins. Maybe? |

Interesting. I'm not a Breeders fan, I keep meaning to give POD another listen since it's been at least ten or eleven years since I bought it and was disappointed. I've heard a few of her recent songs and like them, and understand what you mean by cool and quirky. I can also see how that style could get tiring.
My theory and maybe I'm WAY OFFFF, is that, aside from any aesthetic preference as regards the actual recording process, her music isn't considered, she doesn't try to write a quirky or cool song, she does it naturally and that Cannonball becoming a hit was a surprise to her.
Maybe I'm wrong and she's sitting on a stack of great, poppy, catchy, hard hitting songs, musically muscular tunes.
I think Frank has more of a naturally, catchy melodic creativity; sure sometimes you have to listen to the songs a few times to appreciate them, but I think he just naturally writes catchy songs.

PUERTO RICO PIXIE
Not a single Pixies question. You think the interviewer was told ahead of time, "No Pixies questions"?
Definitely. What else keeps an interviewer from asking a question that everyone wants to know the answer to?
I'm sure there was an agreement, which is not uncommon--especially for big magazines like RS.

"everyone wants to know the answer" doesn't apply to this question.

Yes. I have no expectations regarding the type of response. |

Saw The Breeders last night in SF. They were very good. Obviously had the crowd in the palm of their hand. Smiles all around, except from Josephine. Kim's voice sounded fine to me, and it seemed like everything they played landed with the audience, except maybe for Walking with a Killer which was a bit repetitive. Highlights for me were Divine Hammer, New Year, and Glorious.
Encore was Glorious, Safari, Hellbound, Iris and once other song I can't remember now. It made me happy to see Kim running her own show, I must admit. She is in her element with The Breeders and their new songs sound promising, especially Skinhead #2. Apparently Josephine wrote the music, and it was a cool tune.
Overall, a I'm glad I went and saw them as they had energy and charm. |
