Think anyone will notice? How many copies did the last two Breeders albums sell? Let's face it, Last Splash was a fluke. Its success had more to do with all the MTV exposure it received than it did for its brilliant song writing and musicianship. Kim and Kelley were cute and goofy, their quirky, endearing personalities resonated with a lot of high school/college girls in a sort of hip, older sister kind of way. Had they been able to keep up the momentum, instead of crashing in fog of alcohol and drug abuse, they may have done something interesting after Last Splash, but that's all well in the past now.
As the years have gone by, the 5 original Pixies records have all remained in print, and continue to sell at a steady moderate rate. The Pixies records are revered to this day by music critics and always get a mention in documentaries and books dealing with American popular music from the 80s-90s. Breeders are now just a minor footnote mentioned in passing, and almost always for their connection to the Pixies.
I think it's just more of a hobby for Kim and Kelley than it is a serious music project. Gives them something to do besides knitting and watching TV all day. |

Yeah, I think people probably will notice. The LSXX tour was a huge success, extended multiple times and mostly sold out. The press on the tour has been pretty glowing and Kim's recent solo series has been spectacular so far.
I've seen the Pixies about 15 times between their original run and the reunion shows and The Breeders and Amps about 25 times over the years and I've never really seen Kim look happier than during the LSXX shows-- the band has terrific chemistry and they just sound fucking incredible. I think you might be surprised at how excited people will be for a new album from the Last Splash line up :) |

If Kim cared about being noticed, she would have knuckled under and stayed on the Pixies Inc. payroll. |

Not really. Though she works differently than some she's constantly working on music. Sure there have been long seeming dry spells for a variety of reasons-- yes substance abuse (so boring to hear the cheap shots about this over and over. She's been sober for over a decade now, Kelley even longer) but also taking care of a mother with Alzheimer's and touring with the Pixies.
If the Breeders are a hobby then Kim's been practicing her hobby nonstop for the last 16 + months.
It's all semantics though as one way or another, there's new Breeders stuff coming from the Last Splash line up. Oh and the 4th solo single is about to drop as well :) |

Let's not. Last Splash is a great record. It was of its time but still very cool. Nothing of a fluke about it. How can you fluke a record or a set of 10 or more songs?

Most of us here agree with you I'm sure. Fissile's just flogging the same old dead horse. I might add Climbing the Sun is my favorite Breeders song and that came years after Last Splash.

Last Splash was a good, but not a great record. It sounds very dated now as does the entire 90s (most overrated decade in music ever). I have a feeling that this new album will be a continuation of KDs rather sedated, spacey music that she has been releasing. |

Exactly, it has not withstood the test of time, and that's the diff between art and kitsch or camp. The Pixies original efforts are art. |

I liked this post but imo it was lacking references to Kim and Kelley's history with substances and casually sexist posts about how they've aged. |

Super-bizarre take on that very short interview.
There were also no questions or answers about the Breeders. It was obviously a short interview focused on the single and the collaboration that brought it about.
Very, very weird to assume that questions are off-limits or that someone is refusing to answer them. |

Yeah, you're right. I don't see why anyone would want to ask about her reasons for leaving a seminal American alt band like the Pixies. I mean, who would be interested in that?
As for the new tune, it sounds like late 50s, early 60s garage rock. Derivative and nothing new really. |

Yes it is. They seem to be following her lead. She started the singles series at the very beginning of 2013 (with some white label copies of the first one sold at a show in December '12). |

I'd still like to hear her side of the story, as to why she left the Pixies.
BTW, I can empathize with her, my father is suffering from severe dementia. |

The Spin interview mentions that Kim has gotten back in touch with former Slint drummer, Britt Walford. Walford (Harry Potter look-a-like) played drums on the original Breeders lineup.
I vaguely remembered an amusing story about Walford, so I did some Googling. The band Jesus Lizard wrote a song about Walford called, Mouth Breather. Mouth Breather describes what took place when Steve Albini recruited Walford as a house sitter. Hysterical.
http://www.thejesuslizard.net/inter/ten.html
quote: 10: What's the story behind Mouthbreather?
D: It's about Britt Walford, from Slint. And Albini had gone out of town for a while, and Britt was watching his house, and one night he just got plowed and lost the keys to the house, so he broke down the door--taking part of the door frame with it. So instead of repairing it, he just nailed it up with a bunch of 2x4s. And he broke a toilet, and it was literally raining piss water in the basement, where there was musical equipment and drums set up, and just splashing piss water over the drums and shit.

Deal could be playing a sold out world tour that includes playing at the Sydney Opera House with seminal alt-rockers the Pixies for 4 shows. Instead she is putting out a legacy ruining single and video where she looks like a bag lady. Thompson must be laughing all the way to the bank. I hope the new Breeders album is return to form like the new Pixies material. |

Thompson is probably laughing for a number of reasons, like Kim would probably be getting a bigger cut than Paz is getting.
To be fair, she's looked like a bag lady since 1997.
Srsly, this is why I make fun of her. Having witnessed alcoholism and drug addiction up close when I was a child, I can't understand why people who are otherwise intelligent and attractive take up a path of slow suicide.
Yes, we all get old and looks fade, but looking at her now, it's obvious that a lot of the damage is not from age alone.
Have a look at this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXYjys3bI1k Tanya has aged just as many years as Kim. Have a look at Tanya today, Donelly isn't as nearly as worse for wear.
Moral of the story, stay away from drugs and alcohol.

lol!
"legacy ruining?" more cracks about Kim's appearance? Sydney Opera House?
lolololol
If we want to talk legacy-ruining I would humbly point toward the latest round of Pixies releases (I wanted to love them but, oof. embarrassing).
Why is it that it's always open season on Kim's appearance yet no one has a word to say about how any of the other band members look.
And really, the LSXX tour was a huge success, Kim & co look like they're having a blast and overall Kim just looks like she's doing what makes her happy. What's so awful about that? Maybe she enjoys making a scrappy garage rock single rather than touring as the bass player for a band she's outgrown. |
