Solid interview. Seems sharp and realistic.

Well I couldn't resist. Nice video find. I agree with your conclusions. Does not seem to me he is doing a bad job.

He seems like a sensible guy from that video. I'd love to hear more about the the behind-the-scenes managerial part of the band. Just the small tidbits in this video were pretty interesting to me.

Maybe it's a bit redundant to go over the Kim S thing now. It's over. Charles is a pioneer moving ever forward. Kim S blew it. I think she thought Pixies would incorporate her style. She misjudged it. Her sarcastic reaction to being fired/let go shows she wasn't a good fit. Charles has had very workable relationships with dozens of musicians over the years. He doesn't make a secret of how he likes to work and musicians have a choice. Nearly all do what they gotta do because they value the opportunity to be a part of it. Kim S found out to her cost that Pixies are not a punk collective. Charles is pretty far from that ethos. He's not tied at the hip, never was. I like that about him. He keeps himself free to do what he wants and extends the same courtesy to fans and fellow musicians alike. He ain't no nursemaid.

I'm just relieved I got through that paragraph without referring to Charles as a maverick.

If BF/FB is Maverick then I guess that makes Kim S. Goose, right?

I believe Paz played with Joey in The Martinis... so I'd assume she was Joey's choice as a bass player (but then again what do i know!). Mr. Francis has always been quite supportive of Madame Shattuck, before and after. Look forward to hearing Paz with the Pixies, as she seems to be a very talented musician.

From Joey's instagram feed it's apparent he's much closer/excited about Paz than he was with Kim S.

From what I understand, PL is a classically trained musician. She's the first bassist in the band who's dedicated to the instrument. From a lead guitarist's standpoint (especially a great guitarist like Joey Santiago) a bassist who plays with authority might be a great thing and a welcome change.

Kim Shattuck is a songwriter, a singer and a guitarist. As far as I know, the Pixies was the first time she ever played bass in a band and, though I don't think about it much, I do wonder if maybe the differences that lead the band to hire a new bassist were purely musical in nature.

And that's as far as my speculation goes.

Didn't know that about Paz Jason.

And her harmonies sound great on this clip

Maybe if Paz works out, some future live to two recordings for the Pixies.

Back in 2004, there were rumors that the Pixies were going to reunite with Paz on bass. I think maybe that's one of the things that motivated Kim to come back to the band.

Not correct. Ken was involved for at least a year and possibly two after the reunion started. He is definitely not involved now.

You're right, Cult of Frank. I think I had forgotten about that.

Come to think of it, didn't the management change occur right around the time FB reverted to BF?

Starting to wonder about the (lack of) "other music" knowledge of some of you FB/Pixie lovers. Peeps not even aware of The Muffs or not knowing that Kim S did, indeed, play bass well before her Pixies time (in The Pandoras) or that Paz is from a well-known musical fam and was classically trained on cello, string bass etc since childhood.
C.mon dudes, there's stuff happening out there in rock besides the Pixies

I heard about The Muffs, I'm from Europe, so there you go...Still it's not like she was the lead singer of Hole or L7 or Bikini Kill.

just because you haven't heard of the muffs or kim s, doesn't mean you don't know any music besides the pixies. we can't all know the same bands and the personal history of their members.

Yeesh, I'm 37 years old. I haven't been around anyone for whom music knowledge one-upmanship mattered in years. Kids sometimes talk that way, but intelligent and secure adults tend to politely share information (like BLT did above when he corrected me on Kim Shattuck's bass-playing past) without making it a competition.

Anyway, I LOVE The Muffs. I actually have all of the Muffs albums on vinyl, even. Except the first one, which only came out on CD. There's some knowledge for ya. What do I win?

You're a goofball, simibaby.

I love the assumption we all like the same style of music on this board. What's so great about Charles' writing is how diverse and wide reaching it is. We all aren't indie alternative music fans. I am starting to wonder about the lack of diversity of some of the people on this board. :)

I really can't stand "indie" music outside of BF/Pixies and a couple others. I had never heard of the Muffs or Paz and I have over 800 vinyl LPs and somewhere in the neighborhood of 150GB of digital music. What's that make me? Some kind of sheltered loser?
