Thompson should have never called Deal back for the reunion. If I had been in his shoes, I'd have hired on Paz in 2004 (that was the rumor at the time). If the reunion tour got some traction without Deal, I would have starting recording new material within a year.
Waiting for Deal for nine years was a mistake. They wore out their welcome in that time.
She did needlessly dick them around. However, if they had gotten Paz back in 2004, the reunion would not have been as big, or as legitimate. If anything, they should have canned Deal right after the Doolittle tour wrapped up.
As for me trying to reliably pick a number that accurately judges art; I realize that is impossible as it is subjective. But if your baseline for perfection is Reflektor, I would argue it is ridiculous to give Ep-1 a 1, or a 6, which is what happened.
I believe a lot of it is the KD less Pixies backlash. Not all of it, but some of it certainly. |

I think you have a large percentage of the fans that are unwilling to see new music as legitimate without KD. I think another large percentage is disappointed because it doesn't sound the way they've been imagining for years that new Pixies music would sound. Whenever there is a long wait for something, expectations become unbelievably high. The best example of this that comes to mind is Star Wars Episode I. It had been 16 years since the last Star Wars movie. Everyone had been imagining what it would be about so there was NO WAY it was going to please everybody. Admittedly, it wasn't as good as those earlier movies, but I think as time has passed people's opinion of it has improved. Another parallel is that each subsequent Episode got better. This is what may happen with the Pixies as they get their "sea legs" back. Unfortunately, as with Star Wars, a lot of people were so turned off by Episode I that they didn't go back for Episode II (which was ok) and Episode III (which was really good). This is why it's frustrating to me that the Pixies didn't release EP2 during the break in the European tour. They could have maintained a lot of momentum and silenced some "haters" because I am convinced that there is better Pixies music still to come.

You need to remember the context of 1989. She had only become a royal shit fairly recently, and up until that point, the band had successful, friendly tours that saw a rapid growth of fans.
Tough to sack someone you partially rely on to sell tickets, and only screwed up a few times. |

The manager kept trying to make me really nervous. He's kind of weird. He did it to me and he did it to Joey before the iTunes Roundhouse gig. He goes into my face and goes, "Kim, I just wanted you to know that there are gonna be billions of people watching you live and you need to be perfect." I laughed, I'm like, "Well good thing for me that I never get nervous." I heard him do it to Joey, too.

I listened to the podcast (she's not "interviewed" in it, exactly--the mood is more of a "hang out").
Some tidbits I caught:
She was approached about playing bass in the Pixies in January last year.
The Pixies manager is kind of strange, according to Kim.
She doesn't know why she was let go, but she has a theory that she doesn't want to talk about (yet, at least) and the theory has nothing to do with her, she says.
Her "announcement" of being let go from the Pixies was an intentional dig at the Pixies' manager. What's one thing that would annoy him? Information that he can't control.
There's no friction between her and Frank ("he's not the problem," she says) and she throws that out in a way that sounded sincere to me.
In conclusion, I don't know what to think and only care in the sense that I'm a longtime fan of both Frank and Kim Shattuck. In the end, I'm always just looking forward to more new music. |

kim posted a photo of the 3 male pixies a few days ago on her instagram account saying "i had fun. thanks for the adventure." responding to comments from followers about the photo she also said the following, "you all are so sweet! i don't need anyone to hate on em. i wish em well. they have a ton of cool tunes that i was super happy to play. it's all good. did they deal with it ideally? no. but it was a good run. there is a lot of behind the scenes bullshit that i'm too polite to tell so there ya go."
