I don't hear what you're talking about, at least not in the live clips I've heard. I take it for granted that Kim Shattuck is as technically gifted as anyone in the Pixies, given that she's the leader of her own moderately successful group. She sings great on her own material, though she might've been a little out of her element with the Pixies (since crooning like Kim Deal is not really her style).

i guess not.
my friend also said "at least he doesn't take himself too seriously" and he also liked that bit in vamos where joey goes nuts. so he thought it was all good fun, but he couldn't get his head around the mistakes.

anyway, it doesn't matter. i was just reminded of what my friend said when someone mentioned that joey also made some mistakes.
i was quite surprised at his remark, because all i've ever heard or read before was that joey is very underrated as a guitarist. i personally wouldn't even have a clue. i know absolutely nothing about playing any instruments.

I can't believe anyone can go to a rock show and spend time complaining about mistakes instead of enjoying the show. Really...

Joey has created some legendary, unforgettable, epic riffs. As simple as that. (but do we need to explain everything ?)

I thought it was cool that she had her own personality and style, she was not at all a kim deal copycat, and also that she's more or less from from the same scene and generation, not some emo groupie in her 20s... This would have been awfull.

Indie Cindy, for example, is pretty out of pitch. Since Frank is a screamer, it is too much to ask to have him falsetto that well. He needs KD to carry the lighter parts, or someone else who is good.

I think your friend is just into a different kind of rock guitarist. Joey's not Derek Trucks or Rich Robinson, but at the same time, neither of those guys could play or come up with the stuff Joey does for the Pixies. And as for sloppiest live guitarist all time - that one's gotta go to Jimmy Page hands down.

Both of them are guitar heroes. So, whatever.

joey's playing kind of sounds sloppy at the best of times though. that's no diss. his style is impeccable.

Ahh, I've read Pearl Jam fans eviscerate the band for mistakes or "mistakes" or a bit of sloppiness.

Back in 09 they played a little over 100 unique songs over a four night stand at the Philadelphia Spectrum. I thought these were some of the best shows they'd done; sure there were mistakes here and there but some hardcore fans would complain about all sorts of things; even that the tempo on some songs was faster...! Of course it was, it's a rock concert, if I want to hear the songs precisely as recorded, I'll stay home and listen to the albums.

I understand everyone has different tastes and preferences, and I understand the disappointment if they mess up your favorite song but a lot of criticism seemed extreme, to me.

And yes, Joey has come up with some amazing riffs; heck, the solo to Hey is just an amazing compliment to the song. He never really struck me as sloppy; most of his playing seems very precise, save for Vamos or the end of Gigantic.

Strange now to think how that song went from the 99% last song of the show to (understandably) not being played.

Cheers
