Very interesting, a lot can be infered from the guys' comments. Sounds like they've worked on some songs before the studio, and maybe got into others once they got to Wales. I'm curious whether they recorded anywhere else, or if it all was done at Rockfield?
Guess they all like Indy Cindy as much as we all do. Also, Joey was asked to work in a different way than how he first approached Pixies music. Makes me think his guitar might not be unleashed all that much. Would've been interesting to hear Joey's initial approach for Another Toe.
Dave's rolls really enhance Andro to me, keeps things moving along nicely.
Comments about Indy Cindy made me realize that the music in the verses reminds me of Test Pilot Blues a bit.
It's refreshing to hear them describe the process. Hoping they did this or do this for all the releases.

Why is Joey so angry in that picture?
Thanks for the link.

on Another Toe:
JOEY SANTIAGO: This is a good example of where my “Pixies Theory” (= bending notes) wasn’t coming across with Gil. I used Gil’s Stratocaster to get that sound. DAVID LOVERING: The chorus is all four-on-the-floor with a kick drum. This came about because it was partially what Gil had done with a drum machine before I got there. You don’t have to be inventive; you go and play what you’ve heard before.
Those two quotes might explain why this track is "the worst Pixies song ever" for some people here. Too much Norton influence, Joey and David not "allowed" to play freely, no Kim Deal to bring originality, and Charles singing very conservatively.
For me, it's not the worse Pixies song ever, though it's sub-standard. The vocals sometimes remind me of "Abstract Plain" which is not one of my fave FB tracks (I know a lot of others like it, but this is not my cup of tea)

Excuse me. Can I answer that one too?
In my opinion, "Silver" from Doolittle will be extremely hard to beat. Another Toe can't even see Silver with binoculars, much less get close to it.
I love Kim and the Breeders, but back then I had never heard of the Breeders, and that was the only Pixies song not signed by Black Francis. It was signed by Kim, so I thought she really sucked at song writing. What a nightmare of a song. Why did it even make it into an otherwise brilliant album? There must be some story revealed in some interview that I don't know, cos I never read interviews.
All the other songs up to Bag Boy are awesome to me. Silver has always been the one, huge blemish. Another Toe is pretty tolerable, just far beneath The Pixies' standard.

I don't really like those few tracks as much as the rest of their discography :
Rock A My Soul Tony's Theme Weird At My School and maybe Lovely Day
Considering this, I think Another Toe is probably worse than these So, sorry, I have to take back what I said
nb : I love Silver. It's so strange, it fits well in Doolittle's tracklist, the live version during the Tour was great, the vocal harmonies are complex, and it does not sound like Foo Fighters or Blink 182 :)

Fantastic. For me they are saying and doing all the things a fan wants to hear.
Side note, Dave mentioned 5 songs going in, and 7 more being written while in Wales. 12 songs. Below is from Joey's list on vine, listing the new tracks only.
what goes boom indie cindy greens & Blues nagdalena 318 bag boy another toe ring the bell* blue eyed hexe * snakes * andro queen silver snail jaime bravo
Maybe the rest on the BMI list aren't completed, and these are the ones that were finished off in Wales? Just brainstorming....I'm just excited, don't mind me. Transmarine did mention hearing these songs plus 12 or 13 more though as demos, so who knows. |

It all sounds very technical for a bunch of songs that only seem to dip their toes very shallow into the ocean of new musical horizons. |

Oh pot. You've been bashing so hard and putting in overtime to let everyone know what an abomination one of our favorite bands/artists is/are, I feel a little sad for you. I'll help you out - the new stuff sucks. Stinks on ice. Does that help at all?

I'm no bashing anything, I'm just stating my opinion.
where the fuck's Carl when you need him?
Some articles that might have been already posted, I haven't seen them though, what we already know sort of- a series of surprise releases and EPs and stuff over the next 15 months. Luck us! Hopefully the next one will not be so disappointing as the last two.
quote: Guitarist Joey Santiago, meanwhile, also spoke about the recent departure of bassist Kim Deal and suggested he was keen for her exit not to overshadow the band's future plans. "It took us three days to mourn about it," he said. "I hate to say it, but I'm not going to let one snafu get in the way. It's time to put on the guitar. It's time to shine. No-one is going to take that away from me."

This was never my favourite track off Bluefinger but listening back on it now in light of proceedings it takes on a new light. To me this sounds a lot more like a 'Pixies' track than anything they have released so far. I don't see why they couldn't get Violet in on this. In any case the production out of Carter studios is directly suited to a 'new pixies sound' I reckon. isn't the trick to a succesful comeback to purposely fuck up the first album and then come back with a surprise 'back to their old form' stunning new album?

i dunno, man. indie cindy sounds as much like the pixies as tight black rubber does. the only out of character song on the EP is 'another toe in the ocean'. everything else is pretty recognizably pixies, from performance to writing. maybe the cavernous production is weird, but it's also kinda bossanova. it might just seem weird next to all of frank's solo work which is so sparse.
and nate, that list that you said joey posted... where's classic masher? i'm starting to hyper ventilate. the pixies better have recorded classic masher.

I prefer to use the excuse that I can't afford to buy them these days. In all fairness, I have paid to listen to pretty much everything by the Pixies, Frank Black and The Breeders + tour expenses, so I think I have earned my right to circumvent the bullshit surprise release strategy and wait a couple of hours until someone puts it on youtube. |

FUCK NO. Are you mad? Girl leaves band, frontman replaces her by his wife. Yeah this will surely work.
I don't think TBR sounds like the Pixies at all. A harsher sound doesn't make a Pixies song. Reminds me of a shitty review of Show Me Your Tears by a shitty French mag, where they basically said it sucked because it didn't sound like the Pixies, "except Massif Centrale". Same shit we've been reading for the last 20 years.

I've no idea how he or other producers normally work, but my image now is that Gil Norton got a bit too excited in anticipation of working with the Pixies again.

i was just thinking that Tight Black Rubber sounds like Pixies all the way. if he screamed the chorus, that is, and Joey did his thing all over it. i want that to happen.

Look, I have favorites and non-favorites like anyone else, i just don't see the point in being so upset that a band you like has changed. If I had asked the forum when it started in 2002, "Hey, would you like new Pixies songs?" The answer would've been an overwhelming yes.
People and bands change, and they change in odd and interesting ways. The reunion tours were very much rooted in Pilgrim/Surfer/Doolittle era - these recordings, sonically, are more in line with Bossa/Trompe. That's an unexpected change. More emphasis on the speak/shout singing of the early stuff, with the sonics of the latter stuff - that is certainly not what i would expect.
I wish that everyone loved everything, but that's not the way it is. I just don't understand the anger and vitriol i'm reading here - musicians don't owe you shit. Enjoy it or don't, and get upset about things worth getting upset about.
Like spending your day at a zoo. Off to be a dad!

I disagree. For the artifically inflated prices they were charging for this new release online I think the least we should expect in return are decent songs, and ones that sound a lot more like 'actual Pixies' songs than filler tracks off the latest FB solo release.
I say we, of course I mean the 5,000 who bought copies. So in that sense I, and everyone else who didn't also buy a digital copy are technically owed precisely fuck all. But had they been any good, and had this been on general release on CD for £3 in HMV I might have considered buying a copy to add to my collection.
As it transpires though, and thanks to the wonders of modern technology I was spared the trauma of having to part with what little cash I have right now for a record that ultimately would have disappointed me, like back in the 90s. |
