The conspiracy files – episode 1053: why Kim hasn’t really left the band (a.k.a. how the Pixies have become marketing geniuses)
The Pixies are said to be recording their first LP in 20 years. Buzz.
Kim leaves the band. Kim’s parts said to be rerecorded. What will happen to the record? Buzz.
The Pixies release their first single in 10 years. It’s not bad. More importantly, Kim’s voice is finally on it. Or not. At least it sounds a lot like hers. Buzz.
Album or EP follows, Kim is on. Or not. At least it sounds a lot like her. Buzz.
Meanwhile Kim cashes in on the Breeders’ reunion tour. The Three Others can tour and cash in as the Pixies while the audience is hot. After all New Order did it last year without their bassist founding member (coincidence…) Pete Hook to both (relative) critical acclaim and (undisputed) financial success.
I say, she’s back in within 2-3 years for whatever anniversary tour to come next.
Note: no offense, Charles, just kidding (unless, maybe...?). Good to see you guys back with new (good) tunes!

| Probably just left because she couldn't commit to being a part of whatever The Pixies have planned in the short-term future and tour the world with The Breeders at the same time. |

The last part makes sense. She's able to go do the Breeders thing while BF finally gets to put out some new music to a much larger audience than he would otherwise.
Meanwhile, the "original legacy" remains intact. Maybe reunite in time for a Surfer Rosa 30th anniversary tour...
Do I think it came down like that? No, I'm sure BF would much rather have had the full band on board to record new music, but c'est la vie. This isn't a bad outcome. |
