So will the rumoured album recorded in 2012 now be released? Re-recorded? Re-bass lined? Toured?
The press release regarding Kim's departure shows the other three seem keen to press on, and reading between the lines I suspect she quit a while back (sometime post album sessions pre-Last Splash tour). I hope the other three churn out an album and a tour a year, it is Charles and Joey's bag at the end of the day. Gigantic was just one song. |

Everyone seems to forget that Bossonova and Trompe Le Monde were pretty sparse on Kim Deal anyway, and that the first two Frank Black albums were effectively Pixies sound-a-likes. |

with floop on this. TLM maybe, but Bossanova no.
Maybe Kime felt her input wasn't up to the job also, last Breeders album wasn't very good. Maybe she's burnt out. It happens, we all get old. I'm ten years younger than she and I feel burnt out, not creatively though. |

Judging by how they added Last Splash dates in clumps, I think she probably just recently gave up on Pixies, as there is clearly more demand for Breeders than I, and they thought. It has effectively become a world tour. |

Anyway, bring in EDF and some really good female bass player and they can pretend it's 1990 again. |

I'd just wish they'd keep us up to date with what's going on, I mean just a whether or not they are or aren't recording a new album or not every 5 or so years.. |

I think it's certain that the delay and silence was Kim's fault. I am sure they will make an announcement soon. |

I doubt her band will have a staying power of the Pixies. They may get it to go a year or so before the others bail for their usual straight gigs. |

Kim's presence and backup vocals alone helped define the Pixies sound. So no way was it just Charles and Joey's bag. That seems disrespectful. Kim will certainly be missed, but life is short and I think we'd all love to see Charles, Joey and Dave (and maybe Kim, if already recorded)make new music together, to see what comes out.
I'd really like to hear from any of the four members this week. Not sure if anyone else has ever heard this, but it's been said that issuing a press release on a Friday is the quickest way to kill a story. May not be as relevant on the internet, but I know with tv it kind of shorts the news cycle, and people have moved on by Monday and have no time/desire to overanalyze it.
This isn't a huge deal on a large stage, but for the group of music fanatics who love the band, it's gigantic...haha. Let's hope for some clarification next week. |

Think you are right. anything they come out with now will be critised more in the absence of Kim, or it may be judged differently. It's all fucked up. Maybe they would be better. They've lost any opportunity to release anything now IMO and should just leave it. Sad but necessary. At least I heard them play velouria twice (once in 1991) Queens of the stone age

Helmut: "'Gigantic' was just one song" Man, that's all I need to hear from you to tell me (sorry, dude)..That you dont know shit about the gorgeous subtleties that made (emphasis on "made"-past tense) the Pixies a great band. Would love to hear your other musical opinions. You prob think Pink Floyd was still Floyd w/out Waters, huh? Do any of y'all really think ANY new album will duplicate the greatness of OVER 22 YEARS AGO? C'mon, move on. Remember the Tull song "Living In The Past"? |

Pixies haven't lost an opportunity to put our new music. They could easily put out something this week. Nothing is lost, they would just need to weigh the amount of backlash they'd receive vs. How good they feel the music they've done or are doing is. If the music is great, the fans will still check it out. Everyone here would check it out, let's be honest. For all the "I couldn't care less about new Pixies" said here, that all will go out the window if new music surfaces.
Agree with simi about the Pixies Floyd comparison. Difference is Kim would be Richard Wright while Charles would be Waters in this scenario. |

Maybe change the name to Pxies or something similar, like how Wire changed to Wir after they lost a key member. |

I'm certain everyone here appreciates and respects Kim's legacy with the Pixies. It wouldn't have been the same without her! However, I do think the band could respectfully continue on. Assuming she quit of her own volition, her voluntary absence shouldn't be a deal breaker. The Pixies ended its career centered on Charles' songwriting coupled with Santiago's unmistakable guitar. Kim's presence did unquestionably erode over Bossanova and Trompe, so if they're cannon, I think they deserve the right to prove they can do it entirely without her (they basically already did). Ultimately, I just don't think it's fair that Deal's absence should hijack an entire (apparently) finished album.
Best case scenario would be releasing the album as is with Kim's parts, obviously. But if that's not possible, and her quitting suggests that, I still want to hear what they've cooked up. |

If Pixies are done I'd like confirmation quick. Bury it for fuck's sake. Most who wanted to see them play probably got their chance over the last ten years. Good for them. Enough. If you'd seen what they were you wouldn't be clamouring for a resurrection of an old copy of them. At least Kim gets it.

evidently they are releasing the news of this prior to the release of a new album for the hype, and also so people don't get wrong idea and think it means there is going to be a tour to follow.
I don't believe Kim would hush hush an alreadyb recorded album. Stop hating her, she is lovely. |

I don't think anyone who posts here hates Kim. Not even close. She's fantastic. Her contribution to the Pixies and Breeders/Amps are, obviously, hall of fame worthy. |

I'd wanted to see them live for a whlie and finally caught them two nights in a row at Pearl Jam's 20th anniversary shows at Alpine Valley. A great time. Anyway, Queens play a different set every night and do some nice extended jams on some songs. The second night was better; opened with Millionaire. Played a lengthy version of Fun Machine. Eddie Vedder joined them on Little Sister.
Second night was better for Pearl Jam as well!
cheers |

I think Paul McCartney should be the new bass player.
He's already fronted a reunited Nirvana. He's ready for the real deal now. |

While I love Kim and think she's a great musician in her own right, I think she was more the spokeswoman/mascot for the Pixies. Bass wasn't even her instrument until she joined them. I think any good female bass player with a decent voice good stand in. They've done it before with Kim Shattuck (whose website says she has some "other irons in the fire" aside from a new Muffs album. Kim seems to be having a great time with the reunited classic-era Breeders and I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't try to continue on with them. I'd be willing to bet that Kim gave her blessing to them to continue on. The spilt seems very amicable. I'm betting the other 3 just said, "Look, we really like these songs and want to put them out." And Kim probably said, "I'm not feeling it so I'm going to leave but it's cool if you guys keep going." I think they did it this way so the band can say, "We didn't kick Kim out. She left and she's welcome back anytime." and Kim can say "If you think the Pixies suck now, just remember that I was with them back when they were good." since she's so worried about 'tarnishing the legacy'. As long as the Pixies have Charles, Joey and boy-girl harmonies, it'll all be ok. Kim needs to realize that she's always going to be asked about getting back together with them though...

imho: Presumably, Charles made enuf money from the reunion to set him. So if theres no monetary reason to revamp the pixies then I say, move on. This obsession with "we want a new Pixies album" befuddles me. They WERE one of the greatest bands EVER. I'd much rather see Charles do his own solo great stuff w/ whomever ....edf, etc.
I believe a good analogy is "The Police". They, too, had only 5 {extraordinary) albums then disbanded under disharmony, never to record again. Then, like the P's, they reunited like 20 years later for a big world tour, playing all their old songs, ($$$). Between the break-up and the reunion, Sting did his great solo stuff and after the reunion, Sting continued with his solo career. Sting was to the Police what Charles is to the P's. Wrote all the songs, sang all the vocals, etc.
The P's (Police) is dead and the P's (Pixies) is dead. Move on, y'all. |

Dude, YOU are not Charles, or Joey, or Dave. They are musicians, set for life or not they just may want to *SHoCkER....make more music together! I know, crazy right? You were ragging on people for supposedly hating on Kim because they want the Pixies to play on, but it's ok for you to tell them to quit. It's their decision, it was HER decision to leave. They can do whatever the hell they want, regardless of how you feel about it.
The obsession with a new Pixies album befuddles you? Are you serious? You follow that up with saying they were one of the greatest bands ever, yet wonder why fans of the band would be curious to hear what they could produce now? What a joke. If you don't want to hear what they can make without Kim, don't buy the record or single or mp3 or whatever once/if it's released.....but you know and I know you will. We all will. Pixies are that captivating. In Charles I trust. |

BLT: "Simibaby's opinion is wrong and she is insignificant" Wow. That hurts, BLT. Some other poster called me "stupid". Maybe it was you. I've never put down ANYONE on this board or personally attacked them, least of all called them names. I was brought up to respect another's feelings. And I didnt know that one's "opinion" can be "wrong". If I ever even vehemently disagree with another person's feelings or opinions I'd never call that person stupid or ignorant. Wow. |
