Fool The World, Kim Deal speaks about Joey approaching her for a reunion:"...but he goes, "Kim this is not just a lot of money for me, this is a change of school district for me." See, I knew he had just had a baby and he could actually go some place where there's nice schools. He had a kid now and he had to start thinking about money. And he goes, "Well Charles wants you to call him." And Charles and I hadn't talked in twelve years. April '92, and I remember because that was the last Pixies show, the last time we talked was backstage at the last Pixies show."
She says pretty much the same thing in the documentary.
Like I said, the reunion happened because Thompson wanted the cash to start a family. He tried everything he could think of in his solo career, but people would come to his shows and yell out, "Monkey Gone To Heaven", and this is why Deal has contempt for him.
Thompson refused to talk to her after the break-up, even though she made several attempts to contact him. She tried to get back stage at one of his shows, and he had her taken off the guest list. She said nice things about him in interviews for a couple of years after the break-up, he refused to mention her name in public. After Last Splash went platinum, Thompson was giving a phone interview to an English journalist who had no idea about the bad blood between Thompson and Deal. The interviewer asked, "What do you think of Ms. Deals successful album?" Thompson went silent, and then hung up the phone.
Deal despises him, it couldn't be more obvious. |

One page later, David: "cause honestly my life this last year had gone down the shitter. Relationship was absolutely horrible, and I was drinking a lot, everything. It was looking pretty bad. Couldn't stay in my house, I was kicked out of my own house. Going to the bank and it must have been the most depressive day I'd ever have. And as I just get in the door, the cell phone rings. It was Joe. 'Guess what?' 'What?' 'the Pixies are getting back together.' Nothing in my life could have been more --- it was amazing." |

The way BF narrates it, it's nearly as if the reunion was imposed to him because he had made this joke about the band jamming together. Then, for Kim, it was just for helping the others. I wouldn't take all this as granted. I am not saying they are liars, just that it might have been difficult for BF and Kim to admit (to themselves) that they were both in for the reunion.
I doubt Kim ever despised BF. He felt very emotional about all the story. Raising a family is a very honorable reason to reunite. She is very smart. |

This idea that Kim is still pissed at Charles because of the breakup and aftermath makes little sense after seeing them tour extensively for many years now. If the reunion had just taken place and Kim quit, then the inability to get over the past would seem logical. But after this many years? This many reunion shows, bus rides, etc...?

Joey has been a successful composer for tv and movies for a while now. not rock star money, but i'm sure he's doing ok. those guys do pretty good. "barely getting bills paid"? so, i take it you are a family member of Joeys and know his personal finances?
i don't know what Dave had been up to but i'm sure he was not homeless
green star member since 2006. smb?
Apparently, you've not seen loudQUIETloud. Dave admits to losing his house because he was out of money. Joe admits he was barely making ends meet. Kim states she only agreed to do the reunion because Joe told her he really needed the money to raise his family.
I, prove you wrong, again and again, but you keep coming back for more, you must be a masochist.
you have yet to prove me wrong. everything you say is grossly exaggerated, or flat out conjecture, always with the same purpose: to bad mouth every member of the band. you don't think homeless is stretching it a bit? 'struggling to make ends meet' can be applied to almost anyone. what do you do for a living fissile? how many paychecks would you be away from financial instability? anyone who has a kid is going to be concerned about their welfare and want to ensure their stability.
even if there is truth to what you say, why are you so obsessed with tearing them down? if Joey was really struggling that hard then I feel bad for him. and now I'm glad he's doing better (and getting a lot more work as a composer it seems - I checked his imdb and i guess he wasn't working as much in the late 90s).
for me it's not so much who's wrong, lets figure out who wins the debate on how destitute they were, but more, why are you such a dick?

I found it very sweet and inspiring how the Pixies got over their grudges and were capable of working together again. You can see it in the documentary, you can see it in some of the '04-'05 interviews where Frank Black was very open about his flaws and his fragile ego back when he was a young smartass in the 80s and 90s, and you saw it on stage if you went to one of the reunion shows. These are smart, emotionally mature adults. I thought that then and I think that now.
As for the present state of things, I keep out of the speculation game and consider gossip not worth my time. And there are pretty obvious reasons for why Kim Deal might not want to be a part of new Pixies music--and you don't have to dig in the band members' garbage cans to find them.
For one, she has her own band going who get plenty of respect and have a rabid audience in their own right. Kim Deal is an auteur. She's a bandleader. The Pixies is, essentially, Frank's band. He makes the decisions. Playing old songs for large sums of money is one thing, making new music is another ("Bam Thwok" was a one-off throwaway). She may not be comfortable playing "sideman" in someone else's band, particularly if it may turn into a going concern.
For another thing, she and Frank clearly work in very different ways. She takes her time, even if that means a seven-year gap between new albums. Frank, on the other hand, is a "bang out an album in a week" guy, no exaggeration. His large body of work is proof of that. I remember a Catholics-era anecdote he told about how the band would take a break during a recording session and, during the break, Frank would sometimes write a new song. Then, the band would come back and they'd record the song that Frank just wrote twenty minutes ago. These are diametrically opposed, and maybe completely incompatible, ways of making records. I like Kim and I like Frank, but in 2013, these two, to me, just seem like a bad match (when it comes to making new music, at least).
So, I say, just relax. Whatever "mystery" there is about new Black Francis/Pixies music is will be cleared up eventually. If the remaining Pixies have a new record, they're not just gonna burn it. They're gonna put out. We'll get the news when we need it. In the meantime, just listen to some other music (like that BEAUTIFUL Paley & Francis record that a lot you motherfucks dismissed) or jerk off or go for a walk or something. |

Good post, agree on all of it. My only issue is, who's not relaxed? We are just speculating after some huge Pixies news came out. It's not that serious, as I'm sure we ALL are listening to other music, FB related and non, walking and jerking off with no problems. It's not that serious, just exciting to examine the possibilities now that there has finally been some movement with the band. |

It's ok. Understandable. But I will say that when I tweet those kinds of abstractions I am usually tweeting from a very emotional perspective, not from an art or biz perspective; not that you can't be emotional about art or biz, or that art and biz can't be personal, but I don't tweet that kinda thing.

Maybe he was shocked to find out Katherine Hepburn was like a total whore. http://dangerousminds.net/comments/orson_welles_hated_woody_allen
quote: Hoo boy! I sat in makeup during Kane, and she was next to me, being made up for A Bill of Divorcement. And she was describing how she was fucked by Howard Hughes, using all the four-letter words. Most people didn’t talk like that then. Except Carole Lombard. It came naturally to her. She couldn’t talk any other way. With Katie, though, who spoke in this high-class, girl’s-finishing-school accent, you thought that she had made a decision to talk that way. Grace Kelly also slept around, in the dressing room when nobody was looking, but she never said anything. Katie was different. She was a free woman when she was young. Very much what the girls are now. I was never a fan of Tracy.

Presumably though Dave found somewhere else to live, and wasn't actually living rough on the streets. Not owning a house is not the same thing as being homeless.
He was "couch surfing" at the home of friends.
Fair enough. been in the same position and i classed myself as homeless then too.
To be fair though, I don't think any member of the Pixies would ever be short of a couch or a spare room if they were desperate, anywhere in the world. They could probably couch surf for the rest of their lives if they wanted to, I don't think many Pixies fans would see them on the streets!
I'd let any of them kip my house for a few days, that would be well cool, especially Dave because he'd be most likely to have some weed so I'd get a good smoke out it too. |

That makes sense, of course. I just have my BF/Pixies filter on given last weeks news and am tending to read statements from multi-faceted people in grossly binary terms.

I think we should all bang our heads together and make an album, with all this bickering and squabbling we might actually come up with something rather epic. I'd like to propose calling the band the Bairns. |

All they need to do is go to any Arts school and ask any female bassist if they want a gig. Get a good one, problem solved. |
