I was wondering about the why now part of it too. A release of whatever the Wales sessions turned out to be has got to be imminent. It's got to be a case of shit or get off the pot. |

I don't think she does any of that social media stuff, although Kelley does have a Twitter account. https://twitter.com/kelleydeal
I know. She's just so 90s. |

While I would have rather had Kim stay in, I hope having her go means that the Pixies - whether they maintain the name or not - can become Charles' real backing band with whom he can record with regularly. I am worried that if they recorded an album together earlier as many of us suspect that Kim will prevent it from being released, or that they will have to re-record it which would lead to an even longer delay. |

Bands often need to evolve a bit to keep the creative energies flowing (cf. U2). Maybe they should have just recorded a new album -Kim years ago. |

I cant believe how many of you discount how important Kim is to "the Pixies". Her unique and plaintive voice was the perfect complement to Charles'. All y'll WORSHIP of King Charles is just yucky. Yes, Frank Black is great and his solo things are, mostly, good. But his greatest post-pixies stuff were the 1st 2 solos and 2000-02 w/the Catholics. Everything else is just meh. Wihout Kim there aint no Pixies! From 2004 t0 2011, they was just an oldies/touring/'greatest hits'/let's make millions machine.
I dont wanna hear no ersatz new Pixies. I'm gald she quit if Charles was being his usual dictatorial prick self. Kudos, Kim!
Charles, listen dude: just het the Catholics back together, ya hear? And if yoy dont do anything new just tour, my man a la: "FRANK BLACK and THE CATHOLICS' playing, in their entirely'

We all love Kim simibaby, but the fact remains she just don't want to make a new album. |

Indeed, I would rather have her on board, but if she won't make anything new (despite the spotty Mountain Battles being the only thing she has to show for herself in the last 11 years since the above-average-at-best Title TK) then its not the end of the worrld that she got out of the way. She is more replaceable than Charles and Joey, though its still a loss to have her gone. |

I don't see how they can perform or really, exist without Kim.
Something special happens when it's the four of them; it happened in the 80s/90s and it re-emerged during the reunion. I love Frank's songwriting; he's a genius and that exists throughout his career, Pixes, Catholics solo etc. But the Pixies are those three distinct personalities interacting with Frank's talent.
I think they offered up a very respectful, honorable press release but even if they called themselves the Pixies without her; it wouldn't be them. And this doesn't just apply to her; would you want to see the Pixies without Joey or David?
Aside from all that; going up there with a replacement won't go over too well. She's beloved by the fans! She's inspired girls to pick up an instrument and play; form bands etc. It's one thing when they're doing a benefit and Kim can't be there; but to actually perform without her on a regular basis? I think there'd be a huge backlash. And I'm not assuming they would perform; I'm just joining the wild speculation. Who knows what they'll do---maybe this is the end and there is no new album.
I'd rather have them call themselves Pixie or the Minus Kims and release new music and just play without a bass player or with EDF or whomever. A female replacement wouldn't go over well at all; I don't think.
Ahh, yes, the joys of speculation. I can't wait till I'm drunk later tonight and posting. If I'm actually bothering to post.
Martinis here I come. The drink, not the band. |

Kim's importance to what the Pixies became is being overstated some. Yes, it's a shame she quit. Yes, her harmonies (when they were used) were sublime. However, Bossanova and Trompe Le Monde are 98% defined by Charles' writing and Joey's guitar playing. Would I prefer to have Kim on board? Abso-fucking-lutely. Is her reluctance to continue the end of the Pixies? I wouldn't say so. I think they (the remaning three) deserve a chance to use the name and attempt to prove themselves. The fact is, visibility wise, Charles deserves to use the name to publicize his songs. "And the Catholics" and "Black Francis" aren't cutting it in terms of publicity. Don't you empathize on that level? What the hell does the Pixies' legacy mean to us, anyway? Nothing. Sure, it's nice to consider ourselves a fan of a band with something of a perfect discography (though I'd argue it stopped being perfect after Doolittle, which isn't a knock), but the chance for a GOOD to GREAT album in 2013 is hard to pass up. And if it sucks? So what, delete it from your computer. The 86-91 stretch remains unsullied, or as unsullied as it can be after 9 years on the county fair circuit. Given Charles' output in the last seven years, it's hard to see the album being anything less than very good. Further, the Youtube's of his new songs lend credence to the idea of it actually being excellent.
I might have jumped the gun some, but lets see how it plays out. I have faith. It's not like Kim was kicked out. She left on her own volition. Or we're led to believe she did, anyway.

But what would a backlash actually consist of? Fans not going to the concerts? I think I could live with seeing the three of them live in smaller venues.
I reckon in time this will be seen as a pressure release for all concerned. Frank and Joey seemed to be chomping at the bit to do some new stuff for a long time. But there's no point in forcing it if Kim's heart wasn't it. I'm still looking forward to whatever it is they are going to put out.

I don't think Kim's contributions can be overstated and this is from someone who considers Doolittle the "weakest" of the bunch. I think Norton wanted Kim to sing Bird Dream; that's such a beautiful song as is; with her voice it would amazing.
Do I want Charles, Joey and Dave to continue; sure. I just think calling themselves something different or having fun with it "No Deal" Ex-Pixies, Xpixies, whatever, is acknowledging Kim.
At the same time, it would be frustrating to not use the name; especially if new material has been recorded.
And who knows? The door's open for her; maybe she'll venture back eventually.
The quality of Frank's songwriting is always there; I loved the Catholics versions of Pixies songs; but performing as the Pixies feels off without Kim.
Regardless, I'm glad I saw them back in 2004 when I had the chance.

It's a good question Sprite; I figure they may lose some attendance; certainly Kim has been a focal point for the audience. It may affect sales as well. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think they'd be lambasted by the critics too. Who knows? I'm speaking from the intense fan view of the Frank Black Forum; maybe most people wouldn't even care.

Oh yeah, most importantly; it may feel differently to them. Playing with a different person on stage; it may not work for Joey, Frank and Dave, in ways that may not be easily expressed but only felt.
Again, wild speculation as who knows what they may do. |

Perhaps now is the time to bring back the Catholics!
I agree with Simibaby about reuniting them; but not about his post Pixies output. Cult of Ray is a great album. Bluefinger...meh? No way! Threshold Apprehension is one of his best songs.

Maybe this is all the clever set-up to releasing a new Pixies album. First make it look like Kim quit...then zing! New album. Gotcha! |

I missed them by 7/8ths of a gig in their hey day in 1991. nothing will ever change that or bring back that time so I can back and see them when I was still a teenager and we were all still full of energy. In that respect I am neither here nor there with regards to this, I'm just glad I got the chance to see them live a few times on the reunions gigs. best of luck to Kim whatever she does, her input to the Pixies will be fondly remembered until the day I die (unless I go senile which is a possibility). |

Arm Arm Arm, I think you are dead right when you say the critics will lambast them. But I remember when I was a student in 1990 when Bossanova came out. I was a Pixies nut, real bad, I barely listend to anything else. And I read a negative review of Bossanova after I'd been spinning it for a week. It was just some critic/troll trying to make a name for himself. But I thought there and then the backlash had already started. Same thing happened to a greater degree with Trompe. I could not believe it myself (I'm still blown away by Trompe). You can see it in the Gouge documentary as well. I'd bet whatever they put out the reviews won't be exceptional.
But to be honest I think FB will just embrace the adversity. He had about 10 years of it already from 1991 onwards. Those late 90/early00's Catholic shows are some of my fondest memories. If it's just the three of them I'm sure they'll find a reduced but captive audience despite a shedload of sniffy crtics. F**k'em and just do it Frank!

I guess this probably means no more anniversary tours as well, which is possibly a good thing because it might mean if they do play with another bassist that they choose a wider spread of songs. |

There could be a backlash alright unless they change the name to Black Francis & The Everybody or something. Wouldn't begrudge them a bit for continuing though - I've come to believe the whole 'tarnishing the legacy' thing is a crock of shit. Just fucking do it, if it's shit it's shit, no one dies.
Having heard Classic Masher et al I'm sure it's gonna be more 'Beyond' than 'The Weirdness'.
Also, it's not gonna happen but man Juliana Hatfield on bass would be righteous.

I've this in a couple of places. A commenter on the AVClub said they recorded with a scratch bass and Kim contributed from London. Another said they had a friend who heard the record and said it was "solid". Lets not forget the manager guy who said he was listening to new Pixies.
Did Kim oppose its release at the 11th hour? Is her Breeders tour causing conflict? Would they redo Kim's parts or release it as is?
I sure hope there's not a Pixies album out there that's never going to be released. |
