Kim Deal has quit the Pixies. On Friday (June 14), the iconic band's three remaining members issued the following statement:
We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.

Now that is weird. Why would they bother publishing a PR if all they do is touring from time to time playing the old songs? TBH I didn't even consider them as a band, not since the reunion. I suppose that means ONE THING - they're gonna re-record the demos with a new bassist (EDF please!) and release it under the Pixies name. Or not. Pixies bore me.

I love Kim. Still kicking myself for missing the Breeders show in Paris last week. Pixies bore me. Frank, what are you doing? Just release that Catholics box set and the new BF/Paley record and come play over here!

Interesting. However it looks like they have not disbanded, so yes maybe a new record is still a possibility, it would be weird without Kim's involvement though. Unless they already recorded something with Kim and she has drawn the line there and won't tour anymore? We will see soon enough I guess...

i was shocked with the news, very very sad about the decision, i love kim. But i think this decision will allow the rest of the band, release new music, they are great musicians and i want to hear new songs.
fortunately i'll go to a bredeers concert in santiago next month :) |

Big opportunity missed here. They could have just hired Kelley to replace her. |

I'm interpreting this as Kim refusing to partake in (or tour?) the new album. Shattuck to replace her? |

maybe this whole reunion was an elaborate way for Kim to get back at Frank for breaking up the band the first time. show Frank forgiveness. do years of reunion tours. then record a new album and pre-tour leave the band via fax machine

There are only two ways to interpret this:
1) No more reunion tours. 2) New music/etc to come, Kim not participating.
I am leaning towards the second option if only because of the wording "we will always consider Kim a member of the Pixies and her place will always be here for her." That doesn't sound like something a band (re-)breaking up says, that sounds like something a band deciding to continue on says.
In other news, Violet did mention that she had some exciting news which I initially interpreted as Grand Duchy stuff but now I'm not so sure (the bell was already rung, so to speak, so I figure I'm safe to mention that). EDF definitely could take care of the bass but I feel you need some kind of female presence in the band. Plus, I always feel like Eric is best suited for the keys.

Alright then, EDF on keys and Mike Watt on bass. Happy now? The Stooges suck anyway.

a 3rd option (or 2b) is they recorded - or we're in the process of recording - new material and she abruptly pulled out. putting out a statement like this sounds pretty final. seems like some tension or disagreement of some sort would precipitate such a dramatic move. then again maybe it's all casual and they are friends. lets speculate for 20 pages shall we?
I agree that the wording makes it sound like Pixies will continue but maybe they just mean in terms of the band, as a family. I think it would be cray if they try to do sonething without her under the Pixies name

I'm glad I didn't shell out to see the Breeders during their tour. Though now she has time to spend another seven years to write another spotty album.

How depressing. I hope the remaining Pixies recorded FB's new songs with him and it gets released. Bluefinger was only missing Santiago's guitar.
I can't help but feel a little pissed at Kim for robbing FB's new songs of a wider audience. That's a weird thing to say given I have no stake in either of them, but FB's new albums slip almost entirely under the radar, whereas a new Pixies album would be front page on every music site. Now songs like Greens and Blues/Classic Masher will fly off into the ether. Arg. |

So I'm guessing that just because Kim has left the band doesn't necessarily mean there hasn't been a new album recorded with her? Kim Schattuck could be the live tour replacement. Who the hell knows anything what's going on with this band from day to day.. |

I'm gonna agree. I think Joe and Charles probably laid down some tracks at that studio in Wales with the intention of making a new Pixies album. I'm also gonna guess Deal either refused outright or demanded a change in business terms and Charles refused.
I think they should get some hot young bass player and go out anyway, just to rub her nose in it. |

^ Agreed. As a replacement bassist they could go with the girl he did Classic Masher with a while back. Another option (though male, which is a disadvantage because they need a female element IMO) is the bassist for Bluefinger. |

He should place an advertisement in one of the trades -- "Bassist wanted for rock band. Influences: Husker Du and Peter Paul & Mary. No chops."
BTW, Thompson disabled his Facebook account. |

Man, this was disappointing to read. Guess she just really wants to put the Pixies behind her now. They certainly seemed to have made enough cash since reuniting that they could each do so. It's heartening that it feels the remaining 3 will continue on in some way. I understand she was/is an integral part of the band, but you've got 3 people who seem very eager to make more music and one holding it up but still reeping the benefits of the group's legacy. Seemed like a wierd stance from her anyway not to want to "taint" the legacy. I'd like to think these artists feel they have the talent to produce something worthwile for their fans to hear, even if it wouldn't maybe match up with the older stuff.
Wish her the best, but at this point I'm so invested into Charles' solo work that I'm just looking forward to what he does next, hopefully involving Joey and Dave.
So realistically, who thinks that there are new Pixies songs/album recorded? And why would Kim pull out at THIS point if there was? |
