So we all know that tons of bands have been inspired by and frequently imitate The Pixies, but what about bands that sound EXACTLY like The Pixies? I don't mean bands like Nirvana, Weezer, Modest Mouse, or Arcade Fire, who while very influenced by them at least have their own sound; I'm talking about bands that have basically built a career out of imitating The Pixies. Which I guess kind of makes sense, since if there's one band that you could flat-out copy and still be good, it's them.

Here are the most Pixies-similar bands I've ever heard, ranked from most to least imitating:

1. The Displaced (listen to "Hydroplane" or "Black Box")
2. Moth Macabre ("Pale" is basically a copy of "Dead")
3. Metal Mother Flake ("Mean to Me" has a guitar riff like Is She Weird; "The Inquisition" reminds me of Gouge Away)
4. Pony (they even have a song about Frank Black called "Fortune Cookie")
5. The 3Ds (from New Zealand; "Outer Space")
6. Stellastar* ("Jenny" has a chorus chord progression that's basically Where Is My Mind)
7. El Otra Yo (from Argentina; "Hey Tonto!" is kind of like another version of "Tony's Theme")
8. Mr. Dream (although they imitate many different bands--"Holy Name" is a mashup of Debaser and Lithium; "Winner" is like a Big Black song)
9. Superette (from New Zealand; "Touch Me")
10. Goodshirt (from New Zealand; they have a little bit of their own sound, but songs like "Mousey" and "Slippy" are very Pixies)

Despite being derivative, I happen to think that The Displaced, Mr. Dream, and El Otra Yo are all fantastic bands. Here are some of their best songs, which I definitely recommend checking out:

The Displaced : Hydroplane, Toledo, High Plain, Salt and Alcohol
Mr. Dream: Scarred for Life, Learn the Language, Winner, Fatherland
El Otra Yo: Aun, No Me Importa Morir, Virus, Arruncha

Also, I didn't include bands like The Toadies, Violent Soho, or Eve's Plum, because in my opinion they sound like equal parts Pixies and Nirvana.

So, what are some other bands you've heard that you think are EXACTLY like The Pixies?

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=H60eKrjXw-4 Legendary Chile/French band Panico in their early albums have some strong Pixie influence.Their lead singer Edi Pistolas once told me he had seen the Pixies in France at a 4ad show in 88 if I recall correctly.Note their beautiful girl bassist/vocalist Carolina Tres Estrellas. And listen to those guitar bends :)

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8WnTz9lTZcc Aterciopelados from Colombia used to cover Pixies and Janes Addiction before recording this number from their 1st record.Andrea their lady singer guitarist I've known personally since their 1st show in Puerto Rico in the mid 90's.The band is more folky nowadays but still great.

"Possum Kingdom" by the Toadies has got to be the most blatant Pixies aping I've ever heard.

pixie punk: Thanks for telling me about Panico. You're right, they do sound very similar.

Mickey: With The Toadies, I really don't hear the Pixies as much as Nirvana.

Toadies may have had a hit song after Nirvana was already done but they formed in 1989 to a heavy Pixies influance. You can hear it more in their demos. Mickey the song I think you are thinking of is 'Tyler' which sounds similar to WIMM. They even had a demo song named after the album Surfer Rosa. Today they definitely have their own sound. I still love them.

The first album by the band SPOON, titled Telephono, has a major PIXIES influence.
Their sound has developed nicely, but I still have a soft spot for that first release

Glad you liked Panico nomenclature there's many other gems in all their records that carry on the Pixies influence. They have jammed with Franz Ferdinand members and are a big draw in their native Chile and France.

Meesimo: Telephono is my sister's favorite album. We saw Spoon a while ago, and of course they didn't play anything from it. In my opinion it's their best, probably due to the Pixies influence.

I have heard a million bands coming out recently that all borrow greatly from the Pixies. I just watched the channel 4 documentary on them again this week, which was made nearly ten year ago and in this they are talking about how many bands these days are influenced by them. Ten years on it's the same thing but even greater, they are like the second Beatles. Just a bunch of random guys who happened to compose the most cutting edge/influential music ever that has pretty much influenced music 20 years later to such an extent that few can escape the template they created. So many great bands coming out these who are a lot like them, a bit like them, maybe a bit like them that are so good.

I found humour in PJ Harvey's commentary who was trying to describe how much their music meant to her and she said something along the lines of you put the CD on and it was like they were there in the room with you playing the music. Yes Polly, that's the general idea behind recording music, to make it sound like the band is playing it the same room you are in without them actually being in there. It's called an audio recording.

Anyway here are a few of my favourite examples of Pixies inspired bands these days-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huLplQFezHk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5DlVmgDLJs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1mLFIq38gM

-----

And The Chap again. The talky vocals at the end after 3m really remind me of this Pixies. that for me is what defines their sound the most, the screaming guitars and the talky vocals, a guy and a girl. For some reason, as a format for music it works so well. You don't need to sing, just scream or talk. The screaming vocals, the slightly out of tune guitars, all of it. Why does it sound so good and can the Pixies claim to be the first to experiment with that sound? I doubt that, but either way they were the first band to make music like this and become famous, astronomically famous.

I'm getting really strong Frank Black/Pixies vibes in the new Thurston Moore band album - Chelsea Light Moving.

Streaming here

http://www.slicingupeyeballs.com/2013/02/18/stream-chelsea-light-moving-album/

Is that a conscious effort on his part or is because he got a new band, who are probably going to be heavily influenced by the Pixies as well as Sonic Youth. It still sounds like Sonic Youth, but with a more Pixies edge, and certainly the vocals sound a lot like FB, more like FB than TM I'd say.

This was my best attempt at writing a Pixies homage a couple years back. Sort of silly / obvious in places, but it was a lot of fun to record.

if you listen carefully around the 2:10 mark after Caleb yells "married to a preacher, oh no" i think you can hear the camera guy whisper "tried to molest me in the parking lot..."

It may just be me, but I have such a hard time listening to stuff that is massively influence by one particular band/artist. As soon as I hear it I want to shut it off because it's so obviously derivative. It kind of drives me nuts the same way the sounds of someone eating loudly, or crinkling a paper/plastic wrapper near me in a quiet room. It's entirely possible I have a diagnosable problem, but that's just how it is for me.

It doesn't apply to bands that blatantly rip off old blues or old rock riffs or something that is part of the musical landscape, I don't catch that as much. Pretty much all music is highly derivative one way or the other, but when it's 95% one band and 5% other stuff (like that toadies dig a hole thing), well...

Band's like the Pixies (and there are plenty others) - as soon as a band goes there unashamed and with impunity, they lose me.

Tera Melos

3voor12 described this album as Math Rock, maybe it is. I don't know what math rock is really, bands who sound like Foals as far as I am concerned.

Anyway I think they sound like Pixies.

How much does this track remind you of Bossanova, FB style vocals and Joey style guitar?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZadNJ0GHes

Bit around 3m20s really reminds me of Motorway To Roswell

Full album here

Indeed, the guitarist is a huge Pixies fan. Their earlier vocal-less material (recorded with a different drummer) is what got them the "math rock" label, but they are more straight up indie rock these days.

Definitely some Pixies influence to be heard from the excellent young band SURFER BLOOD. It can be heard on their sweet debut, and even more on their upcoming super tight second album(produced by Gil Norton , no less:), Pythons, coming out in June.
Here's a nice live set:

This band don't necessarily sound exactly like the Pixies but in the verse I think he has a very Frank Black style :) One of the many reasons I love this song :D I just thought I would get the opinions of other Pixies fans :)

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Cage the Elephant (at least on their most recent album "Thank You, Happy Birthday"). They even admitted to discovering the Pixies right before they started recording. Anyhow it's a pretty good album. It's what I listen to when I want new Pixies (but of course there's no new Pixies.... yet.)

Kylesa

Sludge metal band who appear to sound a bit like the Pixies in some songs. Also Les Savy Fav and Jane's Addiction, who were also heavily influnced by the PIxies, many years ago.

Gets more Pixies/indie towards the end. Starts off a bit too shouty, but it gets better towards the end. Tracks 8, 9 and 10 are the best I think.

edit- found a youtube for Low Tide. This one is really like the Pixies (but also something else I can't put my finger in)-

What defines the Pixies for most people, especially young people today, is not the incredible song writing skills of Frank Black but the way they sounded. That's what i want to hear from a new Pixies album. I don't even want to hear what they are called, let alone hear FB sing them live. Maybe the reason it is taking so long for this record to be released is because it is being thoroughly production tested by moguls all over the world to make sure it is worthy of the title of actual new Pixies album?
