It says "Wicked Son", not Wild Son. Which one is true? I sure hope it's the NSE song.

Thanks for posting this link, solofloyd. I wonder if this song and andro queen (and the other new song) constitute stuff being "recorded" more or less as we "speak" in Nashville. They don't sound "Nashvillian" (sorry for making up words) in the same sense as honeycomb, fmrm, and the paley and francis collaboration. At any rate, these songs hold great potential, as always!

I like Silver Snail a lot. Some nice imagery. Look forward to hearing it fleshed out. |

Oh my I liked that a lot, the daughter part was lovely. The guitar sound of Silver Snail reminded me of the first Frank Black album but this one had me thinking of Teenager of the Year, maybe Two Reelers.
What did he say at the end? Think he mentioned it's a new song "he's working on", so maybe it's for the Nashville record and not something from the recording sessions in Wales. |

It was pretty great. We were up front and Paley was complaining (jokingly) about the quiet crowd. My buddy told him he wasn't dead, he was in Pittsburgh. He nodded then played the song. I'm sure he was going to do it anyway but it was pretty funny the way it went down.

Last night in Chapel Hill was amazing!!! A lot of good songs played. The setlist was similar to the other ones hes been playing on this tour. He did bust out Song of the Shrimp for us, still in awe.... |

I thought Abstract and Caribou were alright, I enjoyed his plaintive howling of the latter. I don't begrudge his dislike of WIMM but he should just substitute it for another Pixies song. Velouria / U-Mass / Ed is Dead or something. Not sure if he's ever played U-Mass solo though? I think it would nicely suit a solo set.
Ty Segall is brilliant though, enjoy.

I was at said record store last night...."The Record Collector" in Bordentown, NJ Last time I was in a record store for a show was to see Mr. Frank Black at the Virgin Megastore in Manhattan at least 10 years ago, before he played a show at the Warsaw in Brooklyn later that night. The Record Collector held about 250 people...maybe 175 seated and another 75 standing room? The standing room section was between racks of records! No beverages of any kind, one unisex bathroom! Still it was pretty cool.
I always promise myself that I won't complain about the setlist, and then I always complain about the setlist. I'm hopeless. It went like this...
Los Angeles Wave of Mutilation The Swimmer Bullet That Burnt Out Rock and Roll Where is My Mind? Cactus Silver Snail She Took All the Money Caribou I Burn Today Abstract Plain Nimrod's Son Robert Onion Dog Gone Six-SIxty-Six Monkey Gone to Heaven Another Velvet Nightmare (with Reid Paley) Wild Man From Borneo (Kinky Friedman cover...with Reid Paley)
Highlight: Dog Gone. Actually, the highlight was the banter, as Black rambled (pleasantly) at length before many of the songs. He said he was trying to keep a "record store" theme going, with the songs connected to old records, but I think this "theme" only lasted the first 4-5 songs (specifics...in Los Angeles, the line "2525" has something to do with something!...and he first heard the story that inspired The Swimmer from a guy who lived at a nudist colony that was also the place where the guy from Canned Heat died...like I said, he was rambling). He said "Bullet" was written for submission to a Johnny Cash project, but he never sent it in. He went on to talk later about Gary Green, Nina Hagen, Larry Norman.
The show was great, except....I've seen all these songs before. I've been privileged to see The Man maybe 15 times, and at this point I'm like a baseball card collector. When I was a kid, I'd rip open a pack of baseball cards, and even if the players were great, what really mattered was whether you already had that card or not. A Mike Schmidt "duplicate" was worthless but a Terry Puhl card that I was missing? So psyched. That's how I feel at a Black Francis show. And while I don't expect (or want) him to play Snake Oil in it's entirety, I'm really just looking for one or two I haven't heard before....just throw me a bone. Something from NSE....seen him 3 times since that album came out he hasn't played a single track from it (although I'd seen "Rabbits" well before the album came out). I've never seen him play anything from Svn Fingers. Shoot, the only FMRM song played last night was played by Reid Paley! It seems like the setlist is "stuck" on the same group of songs...it's almost the same as the last show I saw 2 years ago (Dog Gone was the only post-Pixies, non-cover song that was different). It was only 5-6 years ago that I saw him in Lancaster, he played Kicked in the Taco and Humboldt County Massacre within the first 5 songs. Now that's what I'm talking about!
I know I'm ignoring Silver Snail in this argument...it's sort of its own category, being a new song. Believe me, I was thrilled that he played a new song. But it helps my point to treat this separately!
Anyway, enough whining. I really enjoyed the show. I guess the reason I bitch is the hope that Black checks in every once in a while, sees this and says, "Ah, yes, of course, I must include a song or two for the diehards. Perhaps I can cut one of these six Pixies songs!"
---------- Could I stay just for awhile? |

I went to a couple of the UK shows on the 2008 tour - where the set was almost exclusively Svn Fngrs/Bluefinger stuff. Remember some people being disappointed at the 'narrowness' of the choices, but they were fantastic shows. And a very strong collection of songs. Would be a shame not to hear many of them again. |

Yeah, as far as I know, BF never really did Bluefinger on the East Coast. Up and down the West Coast, and in Europe....I was desperate to go to Amsterdam (or Luxembourg!) for the shows there but realities like distance, airfare, cost and work all conspired against me.
I live near Philly and I've seen BF every time he's come around since that period, even driving 2:45 to Easton, MD when that was the closest he got. The only Bluefinger songs I've seen live are Angels Come to Comfort You (once, that time in MD) and She Took All the Money (several times). No Svn Fngrs songs ever, what I wouldn't give for a Lonesome Fetter! I do see that he played When They Come to Murder Me several times on this tour, too bad I missed that one.
Ah well! I'll wont be able to complain that I never saw Silver Snail live!

We all wish for FB to tour with a full band. Like you are all saying these shows are great and hes really playing some good material while interacting with the audiences....but that being said it would sound 100% better with a backing band a la The Catholics!!! |
