Is even there such a thing nowadays?
Everyone has their own jam, and there is little good music coming out from anywhere these days that can't be found from anywhere else on the globe.
You got your pop bands and your alternative bands, but some of the alternative bands are pop bands and the other way round. What attracts me to new music is primarily whether or not it's any good, ie. do I enjoy listening to it. What is it that makes me like it?
Often these days it comes down to identifying somewhere within the song if it's in some way plagiaristic. Is it trying to be something that's already been done, but not quite cutting the mustard, or is it some band bringing new life into an already covered genre.
it's harder than ever to define music these days, and that is by no means a bad thing. Pop music used be pop music and alternative music used be... but now it's all mixed up. Is there such a thing a popular music anymore?
In the old days in the UK what generally defined pop music was what was on top of the pops, and the alternative stuff was catered for by John Peel et al on radio 1 in the evenings. Those things are all gone now sadly, but the good thing is we don't really need them anymore. I would still like both John Peel and TOTPs to still be around though.
Discuss.

To me I feel music to an extent and the music industry as a whole has changed over the last 10-15 years. From the way music is made, produced down to how it is purchased and listened to.
Maybe its because I actually dont listen to any radio stations anymore. Or maybe its no longer a case of 'video killed the radio star' but instead 'internet killed the mtv star' - ok not quite as catchy!
I suppose the sheer amount of channels available on tv, radio and internet should mean a vast amount of choice for the individual meaning no real mainstream exists, but maybe the vast amount of these channels present an illusion of choice where the same old rubbish is repeated.
Then on the other hand is there really any need for music stations, channels etc when there is the itunes generation where people have access to the music they want and listen to it wherever they are.
Then again, to quote the jam 'the public want what the public get' - so i think in some sense there will always be mainstream music, or popular music even. However, over the years it just seems to go in cycles with the occasional original act/artist coming through now and again in the mainstream. |

I think it depends how open minded you are. I've always liked most genres, although when I was stupid young nerdy guy I only liked guitar music for a couple of years or something. Usually the less well known artists make music that is better, but that is not to discredit pop music in anyway. All music is either shite or good. If it resonates with you then it's good. Too much shit music getting played though, and being branded alternative as though that somehow makes it better. It's all sound that we hear with our minds, and it conjures up feelings insides us. It's all out there to find, I just wish people would stop playing the same tired on numbers from famous bands instead of looking into their other stuff. I like to hear new music most of the time when I go out, which is never.
Didn't read your responses floop. My position is still fuck you for your attitude. I didn't mean anything calling you guys fuck heads in my initial post in the politics thread, it was just me expressing my exasperation with the situation. I'm not anti-America I love your country. I emailed trob after he asked for me to be moderated waving the white flag and he ignored me. He needs to read between the lines and stop over reacting like the big drama queen he obviously is. Still leaving though. been invited to a new place by people who appreciate the shite I post and have a sense of humour. Might drop in again on occasion for frank black related gossip otherwise I'm done with this place. Best wishes to everyone.
