Came across this on CT's Facebook page, posted by Jonathan L:

quote:
...this weekend I have finally found the one copy in existence of that little thing we did together back in 1997 in a Burbank recording studio. Remember? It was about the Catholics era. It sounds great, and you did one live acoustic song. Running the entire 13-minutes. If anyone is interested in listening, please go to http://www.jlradio.com/

The website declares:

BRAND NEW SHOW THIS WEEKEND #82
on INDIE1031 and KINGFM

SHOW #82 FEBRUARY 18 (INDIE) FEBRUARY 19 (KINGFM)

Should be fun.

I wonder if this is the demo version of a song that was eventually released, or the demo version of a song that no one has heard to date. The latter would certainly be exciting!

I had a suspicion it could be Surf Epic but I don't think a 13-minute acoustic version is plausible.

Wow this is kind of exciting.

**Never ever heard rejected rare 1997 demo for KROQ Los Angeles of Frank Black (Pixies) with JL and one acoustic song live**

After re-reading the blurb, it seems like the "demo" is not the demo of an unheard FB song, but rather the radio host's demo for the radio station. I don't think we will be hearing anything new in the way of songs.

I've had it in my head this would be one long acoustic song, Changing of the Guards played too slow.

Did anyone listen in?

From the Lopsided World of L blog:

quote:

1997 RARE DEMO NEVER HEARD ANYWHERE WITH FRANK BLACK FRANCIS

Never before heard anywhere ever: a 13-minute chat with one incredible live song with Charles Thompson IV (Frank Black Francis of Pixies, Grand Duchy, Catholics) will be heard this coming beginning this weekend February 18. Crisp and mighty clear. Uber sound quality!

Back story: In 1997, Y-107 Los Angeles, was going to put me on-air on Sunday nights from 9-midnight with “Pleasantly Annoying”, a show I eventually did do back in 2000 in Los Angeles on SpikeRadio.com on Sunday afternoons live.

The company I worked for (Album Network) was overjoyed when they heard the news, at first. Then they were worried about KROQ Los Angeles being upset, so they showed me in my contract that they owned me and I had to have permission to go over to Y-107. They called Kevin at KROQ, and he said to have me do demo for him first. They booked studio time in Burbank, and in a hurry I had to go in and cut this demo.

I called my old friend Charles and asked him to come and be part of it. I thought that it would be a very cool inclusion-and it was.

John Easdale (Dramarama) and Buzz Fitzgerald wanted to come and just be there with me. They were. Charles was great, considering we had done this radio thing many times over the years.

There were 5 CD’s burned, and I was left with one after Kevin & Gene and my bosses got the other copies.

Kevin rejected the show, and in the end Y-107 went with someone else. I have no regrets now. Understandably I wasn’t happy back then though. I am happy that I can present this to you.

They were magical moments, and you deserve to hear it. So do not miss this edition.

Did anyone happen to catch this? Back in the day, this thread would have been full with commentary. Where has everyone gone and why has everyone gone? As far as I can tell, there isn't more FB-related "talk" on another discussion forum, or am I missing something?

Sorry for deviating from the focus of this thread.

Yeah the original site isn't very clear. Seems the show is on three different stations and from what I can make out it will repeated here (http://www.indie1031.com/) tomorrow (Sunday) at 12am PT (dunno what time zone this is), and finishing up at 2am on Monday.

It's also on KingFM http://www.kingfm.net/ at 1PM-4PM PT and at 21.00 in the UK (and presumably Ireland - I'll be tuning in).

Damn time zones.

I missed it too. I'm hoping to catch tonight's repeat but if not I'll be looking here: http://www.oedipus1.com/home/?cat=4

Here's a small piece of radio relevance to read while we wait

quote:
In the meantime, a recent radio industry workshop in Boston might prove to be Black's saving grace. Jonathan L. Rosen, a writer for the industry trade magazine Virtually Alternative, played a track off Frank Black And The Catholics at the "Jukebox Jury," a blind music sampling session. The track, titled "All My Ghosts," has manager Goes' phone ringing off the hook, he said -- with labels such as Mammoth and The Work Group on the other end. Black, however, won't be able to deal with these labels until a final agreement is made with American."

....Black will, however, graduate to the Internet later this year, with a weekly radio show. Although it's still in the planning stages, he said he hopes it will be a weekly music hour, as opposed to him standing around playing music.

"Because I'm not an entertaining, deejay kind of guy," he said.

Dammit fbc, I got all excited there (even if I knew Goes wasn't BF's manager any more). Someone even said on his Facebook page he should have a radio show.

What happened to the original idea anyway?

He stood around and played music instead. Frank Black and the Catholics music, oh yeah.
And how do you think some of us felt when you started this thread ;)
This is how my lazy mind interpreted your post:

{One live acoustic song; Running the entire 13-minutes}

Ha. Last time I felt that little surge of excitement via a post was the last UK tour announcement a few years ago. Thanks for that though yeah!
I'm still looking forward to hearing the 97 song. What we thinking: Where Is My Mind??

Naw, he wasn't playing Pixies songs yet. Maybe the Man Who Was Too Loud, Handyman, I Gotta Move. Something like that.

Ha, apologies fbc, that's how I interpreted things too. So, the acoustic song turned out to be a pleasant rendition of I Gotta Move. Interview starts around 35 minutes during hour one and includes the studio track of All My Ghosts.

They both sound better than ever and I never thought I'd get to hear the "demo" the way things were rolling in this thread ;)
