I can understand that you work with what you got, but it is touted in the press release as if it is a selling point. |

I agree, Darwin. I prefer the crafting to the razor edge. Incidentally, for forum readers, the word on the street is EDF may be making a few appearances on the upcoming tour.

As a (quasi-bullshit) musician, i can see both sides. There are songs that i've played with bands that i wish we got that first attempt on tape because of the energy/spontaneity of the performance - especially loud, fast rock and roll stuff (something tells me "Judy is a Punk" would be about the same on takes 1 or 100).
That being said, i also have songs i've been fine tuning for a decade, so what the fuck do i know?

Generally I agree with your point Darwin but I also think that our judgement on whether or not we like a song (or anything else for that matter) is inevitably altered by the circumstances that surround it. I love Speedy Marie all the more for reading on this forum about the acrostic and I can totally imagine someone loving this album and that feeling being enhanced by the thought that 'Sweet zombie jesus! they produced this masterpiece on the first take!'. |

Time to make a list of great albums made in 3 days
Uh, can't think of any but I'll get back to you. The first Catholics LP was recorded in 3 days but I guess he already had the songs written.

My point was more about the writing of the song, rather the recording of the song. I liked the philosophy of the later Catholics albums of rolling the tape and playing, but that doesn't mean St. Francis Dam Disaster was written in a rush.
As a non-musician, I guess I'm more focused on the lyrics being crafted and being fine with the playing emerging with less crafting. |

Perhaps that "finishing the lyrics one minute before recording the vocal" episode was an exception and we're making too much of it. (I realize our job here is to make too much of it, and of everything, of course.)
It reads as though they crafted the music together over three days in NYC, took a break of however many days during which they crafted the lyrics (and/or played Pixies shows), then regrouped for the recording session in Nashville, during which some final tinkering was done, including those literally last-minute lyrics. That's how they decided to undertake this experiment, or how things shook out, or whatever...
Until we hear the album, it's just idle speculation whether we might be more pleased with the music+lyrics created via this process than we would be had they spent more time refining them before recording. I'm taking a wait-and-hear approach, and I choose to remain optimistic about it. |

One of my friends is routinely praised for his lyric writing, which is almost always done while in the studio. I am holding out judgement until I hear it. But it's been awhile indeed since I have been wowed by Black Francis lyrics (probably since Bluefinger). |

Serious Paley & Francis is serious.
I think Paley & Black sounds better though, like a type of drink you might order in a casino if you were an international drugs smuggler.

Looking forward to hearing this. If he can re-produce the vibe of songs like, my life is in storage, honeycomb, the real el rey, i'm not dead, another velvet nightmare, i'll love it. Some of the songs on Honeycomb were mindblowing, some were not imo. A couple on FMRM i liked. Any release from BF is good news. Roll on release date. |

From Reid Paley: "Black Francis and I recently wrote some more tunes together here in Brooklyn, and recorded an album of them over a couple days in Nashville shortly thereafter. And it's being released the first week of September. That's on Sonic Unyon in the US & Canada, and Cooking Vinyl in the UK & Europe. So the Paley & Francis album is on the way."

Didn't expect to be listening to this today.. Someone already uploaded it to Grooveshark. (The track listing isn't in the correct order though).
I'll put my review in a different colour in case anyone doesn't want to have their expectations altered by my ramblings.
Not sure what to make of it. Wasn't overwhelmed but most of the songs are nice and have a feel-good vibe to them. Sounds different to both Honeycomb and FMRM though I don't suppose anyone who disliked those albums will be infatuated with this one. I like Paley's voice and I'd consider his 'Ugly Life' to be the best song on the album. Reminded me of Lou Reed for some reason. End.

Cheers, thanks. I like the sound of track one so far. It's definately raw, which should appeal to the die hard catholic boys (and girls).
Track 1 sounds like a frank black song I know, but can't think what... oh wait... no it's gone.
Do I need to put spoilers round what i think of it?

I only did that in case people were gonna wait for the actual album release and not have their opinions altered by other reviews (I did this before but gave into temptation this time..).
But yeah it does sound a bit raw. Crescent Moon actually reminded me a little of TOTY or FB, maybe it was the lyrics. |

Don't really like it on the first spin. But hey, I didn't like DITS on the first spin either. Frank takes time.
On the other hand, if I don't like this one it's safe to say the extended pixies reunion killed him creatively.

I wasn't really in the right mind set when i listened to it. It's definitely a sunday afternoon album, when you're having a cup of tea and doing the crossword. Are they going to tour with this? I think they should. I think he should tour with Charles Normal again as well, but probably not on the same tour. |

Ah, that would be sad/ironic. But he released The Golem while being on this extended pixies tour, I think there's still hope. |

Yeah, it took me a few listens to really like The Golem too.
That said, I can't warm to this. Maybe it'll be better hearing them played live. |

Yeah The Golem is great, Bluefinger is briliant and the other things were ok too. Still, Frank used to be a lot more prolific and better in general.

The trouble with this record is that it genuinely sounds like it was written and recorded in a bit of a hurry. |

Yeah, I actually saw that coming. I was wrong, still think he's output was better pre-pixies reunion though. I mean the seven years between 2004 - 2011 above can't compete with the seven years of: TOTY to DITS

This isn't rocket science, but I really like to stirr things up a bit, so:
Playing the same twenty+ year old songs every night for years in a row instead of playing a mixed set of new and old songs (saw FB and the C's four times and those sets were nothing a like even when I saw them in the same week in 2003)might be boring.
I think it's boring anyway. Being bored isn't the greatest state to be when you want to create.
Ahh forget it I dunno

I disagree - while ToTY and DiTS are my two favourite FB albums, FB&TC, CoR and Pistolero are my least favourite. I love Bluefinger and Svn Fngrs and think Nonstoperotik and the Golem are fine records indeed.

Hey Jop, for the record i agree with you 100%. Not feeling this record. Weird because SMYT was all piano, sombre style tunes and it was nearly my fave FB record. This sounds rushed. |
