You know, its a pity for Israeli fans, but the actions the government have been takeing over there over the past several years have been nothing short of criminal. |

It got a strange treatment in the AP article in my paper, is this a case of a floundering festival or is a statement being made?

The comments on the Pixies' myspace are pretty aggressive.

"hey pixies - if you really want to accomplish your goals, i suggest you stop working with all jewish producers and musicians, and have someone at the door to all of your shows who will deny entry to jews. you can never be sure who supports israel.."
"I hope The Pixies will consider playing in Israel after all.
If not I hope it is their management who has fallen for the Iranian government backed Gaza propaganda. I do not blame you as most of the media fell for it too, as usual"

Not a fan of this move, I always liked the pixies due to their non-political angle. I don't see how cancelling a show accomplishes anything in this case. |

And another thing, why the hell did they book that show in the first place? |

Seems a bit 'other bands are doing it so we'd better do it too'. The band's management have ignored quite a bit of irritating internet protesting from pro-Palestinians up until now, after all.

I don't think it's a political statement if a reason is not given. |

There might be practical reasons too; insurance, for one. |

I don't think it's a political statement, since Kim Deal happily visited TA few years ago, and other band members never spoke against Israel. Even though, I don't think it's the right move, leaving fans frustrated, when they see other band (such as Placebo, Editors) had no problem coming here.

Ziggy could be right that insurance had something to do with it (though it's hard to see that this wouldn't have been calculated prior to the booking of the gig). It therefore seems likely that some/most/all members of the band or crew did not feel comfortable doing the gig after the deaths and injuries on board the flotilla. I don't think they'd be the only ones who were unsettled and upset about the deaths and violence and the controversial circumstances in which they occurred.
It's good that whatever their reason, they're not making a bad situation worse by delivering "a political statement" about their decision which would only succeed in entrenching already deeply divided opinions.
Just because other acts are happy to go to Israel this summer does not mean that every act should do so - artists should only go where they feel comfortable going, surely? They felt happy enough to book the gig in Israel and on a positive note, I think they will feel comfortable to play there sometime in the not too distant future. |

This is the most stupid thing I ever read.
I am not quite sure if it is good to convey all the shit written around this "affair". The thing is: Pixies has the right not to tour in a country ruled by dangerous racist fashists.
Fuck the nazies of all kind.

I think it's dumb for any musician to take their political beliefs about a country and punish their fans. The fans didn't do anything. They are there to support the musicians. It wouldn't shock me if the Pixies have less fans in Israel now.
Additionally, why did we have these idiots from abroad (like musicians from the UK) play shows around the US when they said they hated GW Bush and the US invasion in Iraq? If they were so serious against the US policy and the President, they should have ignored the US and played elsewhere. |

Cynical answer 1: nobody gets rich by having many fans in Israel, but can by having many fans in the US.
Cynical answer 2: it's less likely to have an explosion at a concert in the US than in Israel. |

Frank Black has never EVER gotten political with his career. If the show was cancelled for political reasons I find it unlikely that it was his call. Further, I find it more likely that the increase in tension and risk in the area is more likely to be the reason.

This is fucking bullshit. The fans have nothing to with what their government is doing, they should not have to suffer because of this. Why don't they cancel their tour dates in the UK and the US because of what the governments there are doing in the middle east? |

If I had a large family (quite possibly on tour with me) I would certainly think twice about entering into a potentially unsafe situation. |

It's been a pretty unsafe place to go for quite a long time now, they knew that before they booked the gig. Saying that though I've met plenty of Israeli people who say that it is not as bad as the media might paint it out to be, and in fact it is probably safer right now than it was 10 years ago. |

Oh right and how many Israeli fans do you know? Know any that have gotten deliberately found with drugs and gone to jail to get out of military service, or any who have ended up going to India and having a nervous breakdown because of the way things are in their country?
