Be practical about this - the goal isn't to give them the songs he will play, but songs that will make them really dig his music. At that point, if they hear songs they like but don't know, they'll dig deeper. Put together a mix you believe in, and give that to them.

Might be worth keeping in mind the man's own words, that he's not a dancing bear.
I'm trying to think whether he might modulate the set list to better appease the zoo concert/Swell Season crowd. If he were so inclined. That's what I would try to anticipate, joe FITZ.
Perhaps as a precedent we could consider what he did in previous opening slots... tailoring the show to, say, the Tom Petty crowds?
Or maybe, as usual, I'm overthinking things and Broken Face has it right... if you're trying to create some converts, lead with the music you think will pull these friends in like a goddamn tractor beam. |

i hear ya. I've made literally hundreds of frank black / pixies mixes in the last 15 years. this is gonna be songs they would like plus songs he might play.
i know for the 3 people im making the mix for that it will be hard for them to let this cd spin for more than a few times before the show as they will probably throw in some "tom petty" in instead :). i also know that most of the time i take people to see him solo or with the pixies that the songs are much more appreciated if heard before hand. that goes for me too.
for example (and this is the case for anytime i go see a show and i go alot): when hail to theif by radiohead came out i didn't like. but for a month before the show i wore it out. then i went to the show and heard it live and was absolutely in love with the album.
