New B-sides/demos compilation coming our way soon. First announced with the launch of the new blackfrancis.net website and now this update from Facebook moments ago:
"Black Francis mastering Abbabubba, a compilation of b-sides, demos, etc. at Jason Carter's Wavelength Studios today... 3 minutes ago"
Not a lot of info to go on so far but hopefully if they are mastering today then it could potentially be realised in the not too distant future, however I don't know how this would fit into the release schedule with Rock Golem & the new Grand Duchy. Which songs would you like to see make an appearance? To start with I would like to see Ghost Coming to make the list.
Discuss.

Yeah I am looking fwd to this. Ghost Coming should/better be on there.
Radio Lizards (guitar version) as featured on fb.net podcast would be nice too. There are probably about 20-30 songs floating around since Xmass that could go on this I guess. Will be very interesting to see what makes it on there...

I think it'll probably be released relatively, because it seems to me like it COULD be a self release - I think he's proven he can do it with Hotel Utah, Nijmegen and The Golem, and can release more fan targeted releases like Abbabbuba. If he's releasing it instead of a record company he wont have the same pressures to not "over-saturate" the market, like what happened with having to wait for Bluefinger because 93-03 was scheduled to come out first. Anyone think I might be right/wrong?

If they're mastering, I'm guessing the songs are already chosen. But I'd love to hear some of the 'studio' takes that they did during the bluefinger tour (some songs were released on itunes I believe. But there were ones that Ding mentioned..). Or the tracks he recorded during the 93-03 tour - I think it was "That burnt out rock'n'roll" and something else. I remember there was an article about it, probably on this board.
It always seemed like those kind of impromptu recording sessions were probably because they felt the band was sounding good/the time was right, or something like that. Just a guess. |

I believe the other song recorded at that session was Dead Man's Curve. T'would be pretty awesome to have those two! It would mark the sixth release of Dead Man's Curve, haha.

Obviously it'll be self-released, and as much as I'd hate that, I could bet it'll be a digital compilation. Anyway. I want Make It Stop/Skip This Part on it!

On topic: the other day I made a thread about non-album tracks from the Black Francis era, and it went like this:
* (Do What You Want) Gyaneshwar * The Water * Road Movie To Berlin (TMBG cover) * Burnt Out Rock And Roll (Gary Green cover) * Get Away Oil * Virginia Reel * Polly's Into Me * Gimme Danger (Iggy Pop cover) * Abbabubba * Alabaster * Blizzard 1989 * Il Cuchaiao * Make It Stop aka Skip This Part * Serious Curious * Brownie Mountain (BF and Violet) * All In My Mind (Love & Rockets cover) * Bill Jocko (Mark Mulcahy cover) * Angel's Harp (Dark Night of the Soul) * Ghost Coming * A Strange Day (Grand Duchy) * Donnez Moi | Ma Carrefour | Beg (Grand Duchy) * Vapors | The Timbers (Grand Duchy) * Fete Nationale (Grand Duchy) * Brooklyn Piledriver * Taint No Use * Rocket USA (Suicide cover) * The Grindsman * Lost Mi Love * The Cover of the Rolling Stone (BF and Joey Santiago) (Shel Silverstein cover)

I'd bet that you won't see The Cover of the Rolling Stone, the Duchy stuff, Angel's Harp, Brownie Mountain, Gimme Danger, Gyaneshwar, Burnt Out, Brooklyn Piledriver, the Water or any of the stuff on the "tribute" albums. Hunches, i guess. So i'd assume:
Get Away Oil Virginia Reel Polly's Into Me Abbabubba Alabaster Blizzard 1989 Il Cuchaiao Make It Stop Ghost Coming Taint No Use Rocket USA The Grindsman Lost Mi Love
and a few surprises. Some things i'd hope for would maybe be some of the 2007 iTunes session that never got released, or some of the stuff that Duane Jarvis/EDF/Billy Block recorded in Brooklyn in between NY tour dates. That's what i'd like to see.

I agree with most of your thoughts, but why do you think Gyaneshwar/Burnt Out/Water wouldn't be there? There were all recorded in some form or other that are still unreleased. So are Dead Man's Curve and Rabbits as well. Anwyay we don't know do we. I like the idea of a few surprises though...

I know that Gyaneshwar/the Water were, along with DMC and Rabbits, written for the elusive EDF album that is sorta kinda but not really at all NSE. According to the interview i did with them, Rabbits was never supposed to be part of NSE, that this was a different batch of songs, which implied that Rabbits was part of another grouping of songs - the 2006 intended for EDF record songs - that may or may not still be grouped together for a future record. I guess i also count Christmass as an official release, and both are on there.

Fair enough. Rabbits would have been a nice little acoustic number on Xmass come to think of it...

I'll be the first to say it (right?): enough of Dead Man's Curve. It has been around far too long and had too many releases to get another one. I may be in the minority, but I think the NSE version is good and it is, for me, the definitive and final version.
I'd like to see the Bluefinger B-sides, especially Serious Curious. Hopefully we'll get a few totally new ones, too. The Water is great, but I think it should be on a "real" release. |

Agreed in full. Can i go one further and say i don't even think DMC is that good. Ouch. Sorry, but its just too straight ahead for me. Give me Serious Curious / Blizzard 1989 / Ghost coming any day. |

As far as I'm concerned, that's fine Sam. I almost said the same. Don't get me wrong, I like DMC, but the amount of love for it is staggering round here. It always gets stuck in my head but, unlike other FB songs, it kind of annoys me. Much too straight forward. |

For me, Dead Man's Curve was the opposite of what was around at the time (honeycomb/fastman). To hear the man sing a line like his life depended on it was my "antidote". MAYBE I'LL KICK IT.
The bf.net demo and scruvs Du Nord 'o6 can be the definitive. Take your pick. |

Forget Dead Man's Curve, i want to hear a full band studio recording of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nuwXrZoQEw
Vocals are just ludicrously good. I half remember someone round here once saying that at a couple of points on Bluefinger Black Francis sounded like a young Black Francis once again. Here this is also the case, this is his best screaming for years, including the Pixies reunion gig i saw. In fact i'd rather he just kept it for a new album. |

Yeah, I'd agree with you there. I'd love to hear that Bluefinger band, just with some lead guitar to fill things out. |

Thanks for posting the video, it looks really cool! I think Get Away Oil is my favourite FB non-album track along with Pan American Highway. For me the nijmegen version is definitive.

I uploaded this video on youtube based on a mobile phone recording and the mp3-bootleg. Must admit that I played around with the sound to give his roar a bit more of an 80s feel to it (reverb and all that jazz), but in the end you can't manipulate that kind of energy. I love when BF has effects on his voice - wish they had been a bit more playful with it on Der Golem (which is a very playful record in general!) and especially NSE, where I think his vocals are somehow flat in contrast to the music. Sidetrack.
My favourite non-album track as well - not referring to the B-side from the Treshold Single, but the amazing live versions from the Bluefinger Tour.
Yeah, it's a great vid of yours! And a fine performance from the Man.
And I agree, if I had one criticism of Der Golem (and it's purely a matter of taste), it's that the production is a little dry at times.
'NSE' is another matter altogether... I find some of those vocals quite hard to listen to! |

The first computer I ever bought died last year and my best friend bought me a new one for Christmas.
Anyway, my old computer had a lot of songs on it so now I'm trying to build it up again.
I'd forgotten all about "Road Movie to Berlin" which is an awesome song and one of his best from the past 5 years.
By the way, could the B-sides compilation be called something other than Abbabubba? Come on.

I wonder if it's the version of 'Il Cuchaiao' that was recorded by the 2007 touring band. |
