The Golem wins for having a boatload of great songs, for being consistent from start to finish, and for being a perfect execution of a good concept. And because the movie has a kick-ass clay monster. |

I haven't given NSE as many listens yet, but I really can't see myself loving it as much as Golem.
I think I'm a little disappointed with the sound of the songs he started playing a couple of years ago that are on the album, Rabbits and Dead Man's Curve. I love the songs, I just think I would have been underwhelmed whatever the studio versions sounded like, being used to the many great live versions that I've heard.
Rabbits IS lovely though. And Dead Man's Curve is one of my favourite Frank songs.

NSE is easier to swallow (no pun [well, yeah pun, I guess]) but the Golem is more rewarding. I don't kick back and listen to Golem start to finish though, I've only been able to do that a couple times. Now I have it hacked down to the main songs.
Maybe the situation in trobrianders pic is what "When I Go Down on You" is about...

if NSE was 22 songs in length then it would win, imo. golem wins, i think. apples and oranges.

Golem all the way. Love it. So much variation, unusual instrumentation, really good grooves. Love it.
NSE - i hope this is another Cult of Ray for me personally. I didnt get COR for a while. Now i love it and its an essential FB record. Unfortunately i dont think it is. In saying that this is BF anhd not FB so maybe thats where my problem lies.

Golem. Nicely crafted, good ensemble playing, and the Man on fine voice.
NSE just sounds rushed. |

Ouch! Erotik is being beaten up ruthlessly by the strong Golem (it's true that Golem is 11 songs heavier, maybe they just dont belong to the same category). But remember Golem was on the ring first. Personaly I think it's like Beatles (Golem) vs Kinks (Erotik). Beatles/Golem reach to a greater body of work (more good songs) but Kinks/Erotik have the true gems. Now I can say I dont like NSE tracks order. I made a new one for me, and I appreciate it much better that way:
1 Rabbits 2 Dead Man's Curve 3 Corrina 4 Wheels 5 6 Legged man 6 Wild Son 7 Nonstoperotik 8 Cinema Star 9 O my tidy sum 10 Lake of sin 11 When I go down
Tell me if it's not better that way!!!

How can you move Cinema Star from its rightful place at the end of the album, Grotesque? |

the tracklist IS a bit disorienting. but as i've touched on before, CINEMA STAR doesn't sound like the end of the album to me. it sounds like the song that comes right before the final 11.

The first leaked version of NSE had When I Go Down as track #1. It didn't work at all - total mess with only 1 misplaced song.

Weird. That's what I sorta did. I moved Ghost Coming into the open track 12 spot. A great closer in my opinion, like Dog in the Sand.

I love the tracklist as it is, to me Cinema Star is an epic and appropriate closer. I've been noticing we're a very picky bunch haha.

When I Go Down should have been the closer indeed. Since I heard The Golem twenty spins more than NSE, my choice in this battle is that little beast.

Gotta go with Golem, I think. Sure, I skip nearly all of the interludes and reprises, but "You're Gonna Pay" is getting more listens than anything on NSE.
THE NSE thread has a post early on where the tracklist was exactly reversed. Wasn't that tracklist released by Frank? Anyone tried listening to it that way?
Ghost Coming would make a nice closer. Btw, does anyone have any idea why I always expect to hear a giggle at the end of Cinema Star? It's like I've heard that ending before (with the swelling strings) and in that song a girl giggles.

Just a whole load more songs for the collection. iTunes isn't my favorite way of playing music, but it sure makes it easier to jump tracks. I got more Frank songs than any other artist. Well I'll be damned.

I think I can sorta see why Ghost Coming didn't make the cut. It's a great track, but it really does sound like a B-side to my ears. I'm not even sure how to qualify that, but that's how it strikes me. The subject matter and production doesn't fit either, IMO.

I agree that its a great track, but more of a b-side than an album closer. I think B-sides typically get held in greater regard than songs merit, because there are lower expectations causing the listener to get over-excited when the songs turn out to be good. Not saying that the songs arent good - i really like ghost coming - i'm just saying they get over valued, and its something i do as well. An example of this is SSMVGD, i think its really cool and mostly think "aw this song should've been released!", but I realized if it was an actual album it'd probably be one of my least favourite Frank Black albums - it gets elevated by being unreleased. That's my take anyways.

up to this point i have labeled all BF releases as Frank Black, just to keep all the music together on my iPod. now, however, i have put all Black Francis in its own category. the past few years have seen one amazing release after another from this guy (not that that's unusual). i've been on a real Black Francis kick. obviously the 2 new albums contribute to that, but b-sides, live shows (utah saloon arrived in the mail yesterday!), and the FiNGeRS- i can't get enough.

I think after a few weeks of listening I'm going to have to switch to team Erotik. But hot damn, every Black Francis release has been excellent so excellent - Christmass (half counts because some of the songs are accredited to Black Francis), Bluefinger, Svn Fingers, Nijmegen (sp?), Golem, NSE - exciting times.
