Did anyone who had the advance DVD copies actually screen on 26 Feb as was suggested? Any reports, convert any new fans?
I couldn't do it, as I was prepping for ACDC gig the next day, which was great by the way. All going well, Thurs 4th March will be my day..

04 March 2010 - I did the unthinkable tonight... I did my home screening of The Golem in a Cinema. My family own a Theatre, so about a week ago I had the crazy idea to try and show it there. Everything lined up, so I thought F* it, let's do it. End result = amazing! It was well worth the small effort to get it organised. I had a private/closed session of 12 people. Everyone loved it.
It was the first time I had seen the whole film in one sitting. It had a very nice slow build throughout, a journey. FB's score blends really well, some wonderful moments scattered right thru, I am still on a high. Thank you Black Francis (+ EDF) for the most memorable experience. ---
In context with above story, here is a pic of our Theatre (The Star Court). Photo was not taken on Golem night, but you get the idea. Theatre dates back to 1921.
Not The Castro, but close enough.
The Ticket.

Appreciate all the comments everybody. Tried to get into the spirit of an "event" - and it worked well, a magic night.

anyone planning on getting some well versed fans (and some not so) together for a "Rocky Horror" like bash? |

We had a bit of a family reunion two weeks ago and I was able to muster up a group of about 13 people to watch. Some had seen the Golem before (I made them watch that, Cabinet of Doctor Caligri, and Nosferatu back a few years ago when I was on a big Expressionism kick) and some were pixies fans, one was a fb & the Catholics fan, and one was a very big film geek. All of them dug it, with a few asking for a burned copy of the cd. The ones that had seen The Golem before all agreed, to a person, that Charles' score greatly improved the movie for them. My mother told me that while she had original found the film visually striking when I first showed it to her, it had eventually lost her interest after a half hour or so. This time, with the engaging themed, lietmotif, and the commenting/explaining lyrics, she had a much more satisfactory viewing and never became bored. I consider that a Black Francis victory!
As I now have the 5 disc set I am going to send the screener to a college buddy of mine who's now in the army. He's a big pixies fan and enjoys cinema, so I think he'll appreciate it. I may first show it to some law school friends living in NY. I sort of duoubt its up their alley but, dagnabbit, I want to share!

I realize that the location is desolate and local Fb fans are few, but if there is enough interest, I would be willing to organize just such an event in Grand Island Nebraska. There is a beautiful theater that was built during the silent movie era (check out the history page). http://www.grandmovietheatre.com/index.html It was purchased and converted to a 501(c)3 nonprofit to prevent it from going the way of the buffalo. I'm pals with the vice president of the Board of Directors. I know The Golem is something he would really enjoy and want to see enjoyed by others in the theater. Bands that I've been in have played there in the past. I am not sure if they still do live music, but I think it would be cool to preface the movie with a little Fb tribute show. Perhaps members of this forum could create a pseudo band, decide on a set list, practice individually, and get together once for a rehearsal the afternoon before the show. I'll volunteer myself for drummer. I would also be willing to provide a PA, amps, mics, and even guitars and bass if people wanted to pack lightly. Again, this would all depend on the amount of interest people have. If 30-40 people on this forum would come, I could probably get that many locals to show up and I think it would be worth it. Then of course the Grand Theater's Board of Directors would have to give the Okay--but I think I can handle that. |
