maybe a little early for best-of lists, but why not...

2009 has been a fantastic year for new music for me.
I have not enjoyed more new music since probly 1997.
in the previous 5 years i'd be lucky to have got 1 album released that year, whereas this year i've got 7...is unheard of, especially with a top 4 i hadn't even heard of before this year.

anyways, down to my list:
1. Part Chimp - Thriller
undeniably album of the year.
so loud, so mean, so fantastic.
2. Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue
couldn't get more different from number 1. some fantastic folk/country. lovely. i know it was released in 2008, but it's my one blemish.
3. The Fernice Brothers - Yonder Is The Clock
so hillybilly it's just fantastic. i'm not a fan of bob dylan, but even to me he sounds like him. i think this is going to sound even better next year..
4. De Rosa - Prevention
a real suprise for me this year - i didn't think i'd like the scottish twange which comes across so strongly is this folk/indie/scot album, but i find myself going back to it alot.
5. Grand Duchy - Petits Fours
i really liked this album when it came out - it hasn't quite had the distance, but very enjoyable nonetheless.
6. Micah P. Hinson - All Dressed Up And Smelling Of Strangers
a 2-disc set of covers seems a weird choice for micah, but the first disc especially mostly works very well. acoustic micah is tough to beat. the 2nd disc of electric isn't so successful. oh well.
7. Black Heart Procession - Six
best BHP album since the last number album "3" - a nice return to form from the boys, but still a fair way from the best early recors...

and as for 2010 - best album/dvd of the year already decided:

i really like the future of the left album - travels with myself and another

also, grizzly bear - vecketamist

super furry animals - dark days/light years

matisyahu - light

doves kingdom of rust was alright

disappointed with stellastarr*'s, franz ferdinand's, and bob mould's new ones

grand duchy is a no-brainer.

The waxworks were an immensely eloquent dissertation on the wonderful ordinariness of mankind.

All things considered, I do like the Grand Duchy record... It's refreshing.

Things I've liked so far include:

Vic Chesnutt - At the Cut
Wolves in the Throne Room - Black Cascade
Big Business - Mind the Drift
Borah Bergman Trio - Luminescence
Cobalt - Gin
Nadja & Black Boned Angel - S/T
John Zorn - Alhambra Love Songs
Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions
Tombs - Winter Hours
Dälek - Gutter Tactics
Kylesa - Static Tensions
HKY - S/T
Mary Halvorson & Jessica Pavone - Thin Air
16 - Bridges to Burn

Still unsure about Evangelista, love some of the tracks but still tend to drift off on the others...

My favorite this year was probably Kristin Hersh's as yet unnamed album available at her site.

After posting here, I've discovered Ben Frost's "By The Throat", which definitely belongs somewhere near the top of my list.

I've also bought the Leyland Kirby set, I blame Denis and The Wire.

My problem is that I buy much too many CDs, I hardly have time to listen to all of them. I might have some sort of OCD.

You shouldn't have! It just got released in a 6-LP box set that is even nicer than the CD edition.

Heh.. I know that feeling. I bought 20 CDs in January, most of which I won't listen much to. I'm restraining myself this month (well, already bought 5) to save my cash for The Golem.
