It's been a while since #1, but i thought i'd skip to #3 since TOTY had a thread recently. Hopefully since people are checking the forums again for news of non-stop erotik this thread can get more conversation going.
I think overall it's a decent album, but for me it marks the end of his best string of albums (Come on Pilgrim to Teenager of the Year) to his least inspired (though still strong) string of albums (CoR to Pistolero).
I think the problem with this album is that there is a bit of a problem regarding weaker tracks that perhaps could have been used as b-sides - Jesus Was Right, Mosh Dont Pass the Guy, and Dance War.
Also, i've never really been able to get into songs that people really seem to love off of this album like I Don't Want to Hurt You, and the Last Stand which may hurt my listening experience.
That being said plenty of joy to be found on this album - I really like Men In Black, The Marsist, Cult of Ray, The Creature Crawling, You Ain't Me and Punk Rock City.
Favourite: Marsist Least Favourite: Dance War Overrated: I Dont Want to Hurt You Criminally Underrated: Cult of Ray Rank: 6.5/10
What does everyone else think? It'd help if you talked about your favourites, least favourites, overrated, underrated ect. because it's both interesting and would start conversation. |

i like it better than doolittle....just kidding!...maybe..
to be honest i didn't really care for it at first...i think it was because i had all these expectations of a follow up to toty...but that was my fault...and it seemed like it took forever to come out..after i got over that i really started to enjoy it and then got a better appreciation after i saw the cult of ray tour...i really like the production on this album..it sounds so crisp.
my fav's the marsist you ain't me i don't want to hurt you kicked in the taco cult of ray last stand punk rock city
rating: 9.5/10

Masterpiece 10/10.
The weakest track is Punk Rock City but I can still listen to it depending on my mood. Adventure & Mosh are amazing. Cult is a classic, the Marsist...ahh, it's an amazing album. |

Men in Black is one of my favorite songs ever. It's just amazing.
Look at this live performance.

Jeus was right is also another great song, so good when that end solo kicks in. |

Do the people who rate COR so highly think that COR is not a step down from Teenager of the Year? |

It is definately a step down from teenager, not surprising though, teen is near enough the best album ever. |

I don't care for the production very much. A step down from 'Teenager', but not as astonishingly raw and hard as the later Catholics albums.
'Dance War' is a great riff and melody, but the lyrics are pretty stupid. Not a fan of 'The Creature Crawling' either.
However, the album has some of FB's greatest songs. The title track really is a masterpiece, in the proper sense of the word! |

Not a bad album, but Franks worst for sure.
Best song: 'Men In Black' (I also love 'You Aint Me')
Worst song Frank Black has ever written: 'Dance war'.
Rank: 6/10 |

Masterpiece, more fun that Doolittle.
I remember sitting in a basement listening to Fields of Marigold until I passed out.

Love this album, just love it. And there are definitely worse songs than dance war out there. End of Summer off of Fastman/Raiderman comes to mind. Not really sure I could describe any Frank ablum as "worst".
His stuff basically falls into two categories for me; fucking masterpieces or just really, really fucking good. COR falls into the former category. |

Just wondering... How do you guys like the single version of "men in black" as opposed to the one on COR?
I think COR has always been oddly underated. Maybe because it was sort of a minimalist effort after the lush production of the his self-titled Yellow/Orange/maroon/you-know-the-one album, and the orgiastic "Teenager.." - which has so many good songs, it's out of control. COR just felt a little 'smaller', but I don't mean that in a bad way.
I remember that I got the edition with the bonus CD with 4 songs and I literally could not believe that songs like 'village of the sun' or 'can I get a witness' were left off the album. I mean, "Village of the Sun" is one of my favorite FB tracks ever, I think. The organ and the whole sound of it was perfect. I still don't know what it's about, though. |

Good point, i'm listening to Village of the Sun right now it's great, i think it'd be a highlight of the album had it been selected and replaced a weaker song (looking at you dance war). Can I Get a Witness is great too, though it might be a bit country for the album - what a hooky chorus though. I like the men in black from CoR better, giving it that extra muscle really brings out the song |

I think Cult of Ray is the last album Frank recorded that has a lot of fast-tempo rocking songs. I'm happy with the tracks and I think the album has a near perfect flow. I'm glad the potential Cult tunes ended up on Oddballs.
I also love Dance War. That drumbeat is great, so full of energy! |

I re-listened to the album tonight, and i do think it's better than i thought it was before - but far from a masterpiece. A pretty good rock and roll record, not a great one. Now for a compliment and a critique: Compliment: Lead guitar, and vocal delivery on the Marsist are awesome Critique: Jesus was right. The song has some of the worst lead guitar in a frank black song - i was listening to it thinking, this isnt as bad as i remembered, but then that stupid end up guitar lick came in and it reminded me again. Also having the lyrics "I like distortion when i barre chord" at such a crucial moment is kid of lacking

Good album ,just feels a little uninspired
i think it would have been much better if his vocal delivery was the same as his live perfomances of these songs.
It just sounds a little "whimpy" on the album

I guess masterpiece is a little strong, but this album has really become one of my favorites. It was definitely not overnight, though.
And I really do like distortion when I bar chord, although I only have an acoustic guitar and never get to. Distort my bar chords that is. |

I've always loved this one, though at the time it came out, I thought he was becoming awfully weird. Several career swings later, I've come to love how I don't understand where the hell he seems to be going.
The title track and Last Stand of Shazeb are my favorite one-two punch to end any FB album. The album orgasms toward the end of the title track, and then rocks you to sleep on the last one.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

My only problem with this one is that it sounds over-thought. Overcooked. When I was in the navy, we had an expression to describe over-thinking something - Nuking it. This one always seemed Nuked to me. I think its an alright one, but probably my least favorite of anything he's done, which is a pretty relative statement.
For me, the problems start with the loud, busy, effects-laden, trying-too-hard-to-be-weird guitars solos that dominate The Marsist. I like The Marsist as a song (Face!), it's entertaining as hell, but the production signals turbulence ahead. I mentioned in the FB&tC thread that the solos stick out like a sore thumb to me. That overcooked vibe bleeds into the rest of the production. I hate to say anything bad about the songwriting, but many of the tracks always came across to me.. blah. I don't know. This albums just always rubbed me the wrong way, kind of. There's a few keepers on there for sure, but... Eh... Maybe if it had been punched out in a couple takes like FB&tC, it might have been better. To my ears.
I think the raw, back to basics approach of FB&tC was due in large part to those issues.
Also... I Don't Want To Hurt You probably would have been tolerable on any other album, but here it makes me want to shut my hand in a car door.
I'll mash your perfect parts. |

Gotta say, the distorted bar chord that is hit directly after "when I bar chord" is pretty damn crunchy. In a good way.

I was initially disappointed with COR. I suppose at the time I was hoping for TOTY part 2 tbh, and this seemed a bit flat in comparison. Also a few of the songs sounded kind of anonymous to me, which was something I'd never felt before either with FB or Pixies.
All these years later I think it's great, definately underrated. Particularly love The Marsist and the title track. |

I remember first hearing one of the singles on the radio and thinking it was an average new band with a bit of a Pixies sound. When I found out it was the new FB album I wasn't impressed. The first two FB albums were so flawless, and it was only the second time that the man failed to live up to my expectations (Trompe Le Monde being the other time). It is prophetic though that after he releases an average album that he re-defines himself. The first Catholics album, in my opinion, was brilliant. |

Just listened to it again - it has some solid songs and is possibly one of his more experimental albums and has a sci-fi feel to it. It had potential and could have been a great album with some re-writes and re-arrangements of some songs, such as changing that stabby lead on Jesus was Right. Men in Black is probably my favourite track on the album.
