An abysmal review. For me the album conjures up Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Dylan, The Stones, The Pogues, JOhnny Cash - this arse hears Huey Lewis and Dire Straits???? There is no mention of the lyrics (and the subject matter) - Frank's most direct and moving ever. No mention of Coastline, Everything is New, This Old Heartache. Another worthless review, Frank and the band deserve better.

Well, if I see a review that begins with "Porky rocker Frank Black", I don't feel the need to read further. I wonder how Rolling Stone will be able to produce a shittier review than this one.

That's it, I don't need to see anymore evidence. Sarah is God. That was truly hilarious madame, and I will adopt "no lube!" as my prefered condemning statement to all who trespass against me, a la "off with their heads!".
Oh, and Q sucks. What the hell was that? Dire Straits? Money is nothing and dicks are free. |

Your W.W.S.D. bracelet is in the mail, my child. Be warned that I am a harsh god and that your days will mostly be taken up now with the purchase, consumption, and offering of chocolate.

I would not have chosen this path were not prepared for the chocolatiering. Also, I imagine any "ten commandment" style messages from the heavens will be delivered not on stone tablets, but in classic pictionary format. Words have so much more meaning when you pictionate them. |

While i see your point sarah, i think it is slanted in favor of spinart. i am a musician myself and understand artists are in a tenuous situation right now. but the system is broken - and it needs to be re-thought. for too long record companies have given excuses as to why they dont simply release a cd as soon as they can - advertising being chief among those reasons. the fact is artists want their music out asap, as do the fans. who drags out the process? - the record company. yes, there are a lot of logistics involved in getting a record ready, but in a capitalist business model, the company doesn't get to dictate the terms of customer activity.
A. the people want the music as soon as it is done
B. the tecnology exists to deliver it to them -
what does a company do with this information - if they are smart, they say
C - let's give it to them faster than anyone else.
but what are record companies saying: No, we will keep the macinery WE want in place and YOU, the customer will live with it. Sorry, it doesn't work that way. so i say to all those music lovers, as a musician, download until your hard-drives crash - because it's the only way to make the record companies listen. don't be fooled! they want you to feel guilty for being an INFORMED consumer. We're all fans the musicians; we will buy the record gladly if you only let us!!!!
sorry to rant at spinart, a cool company and certainly not a major label. - but any record companies who continue to use an outdated business model deserve what they get - piracy.
You got to be kidding me. Just because the system is broken(so you believe), does that mean you should take advantage of it? Have some integrity man! Why don't you stop trying to indulge yourself so much and take a moment to consider the implications of your me-me-me now-now-now philosophy. It means you're taking the artist, in this case Frank, and stabbing him in the back. It's Frank's art and we should respect his wishes as to it's release. If he desired to release his art for free, then he'd do that. If he desired for you to have it before Sept. 9th he'd release it on his own damn website and you could download it. Well, he didn't do that. So you're stealing from Frank. And all this other crap is irrelevant: the record companies taking too long; the promise that you're going to buy it after it officially comes out; the fact that you are an artist, and that you somehow are privy to what's going on inside Frank's mind . They're excuses for your actions, plain and simple. And flimsy ones at that. For Chrissakes, have some fucking respect for the man you supposedly admire. I halfway understand the people who cave in to temptation and reluctantly download the album. We've all been there. But when you attempt to justify yourself as being in the right, you lose any and all empathy. |

Hi all, brand-new here; this looks like a fantastic forum.
I got an advance copy of "Show Me Your Tears" (hah; originally typed "Teats") as well, from a record-critic friend. I absolutely love it. "Nadine," "Goodbye Lorraine," and especially "This Old Heartache" are going in my Personal Pantheon (it's like a Personal Pan Pizza, but different).
"Manitoba" (the final song) doesn't do a whole lot for me; it seems a bit self-aggrandizing in a Richard-Gere kinda way. But maybe that'll change. His music often takes a while to grow on me. |

Yeah I agree about Manitoba.... but then again I have only had the song for a day, and I have a very very bad copy of the song recorded from Spinart website. With any luck I shall have the whole album within a few days as Parker Airspace is generously sending me a copy.... Give it a week and I'll probably be calling Manitoba the best song of all time.
