Awesome show last night in Glasgow. Venue was packed, sound was really good (considering the usual dodgy sound you get at the SECC)

Band were really tight - similar set list to the Dublin shows, but with about 8 songs from Surfer Rosa/Come On Pilgrim added on after 'Into the White'. Charles' singing/screaming was right on the money and Kim did the between song chat

The light show and video screens made it a bit more of a spectacle than a usual Pixies show and were very Pixieseque

It was very, very good and I'm still grinning from ear-to-ear

I was in Glasgow last night and have to say that 5 songs in I thought that this was the best concert I had ever been to.
That remains true 12 hours later...

I s'pose what follows contains what could be considered spoilers, so if you are going to other shows and want to remain pure then I say you should leave now - but in the knowledge that you will not be disappointed.

The Pixies started as the previous 4 shows with 4 B-sides (at the time I was sure there had been 5 but must have been wrong...)
'Weird at my School' and 'Manta Ray' are two of my fave Pixies songs so to hear them live was amazing. Bailey's Walk we were told was being played for only the fourth time ever! (presumably that doesn't include rehearsal but I wouldn't bet on it ;) - Not that they weren't tight and sounding amazing - just that that's how the Pixies seem to do things!
But i'm jumping ahead - the show opened with a montage of sections from 'Un Chien Andalou' - this must have lasted 3-4 mins and then straight into the first song. The video screen behind the band was excellent - didn't distract or intrude and all the animations and films seemed to have been produced specifically for the show.
So, after the first 4 B-side songs we're into Doolittle. The crowd, who by now are warmed to a frenzy. Go. Mental.
The word 'Doolittle' fills the screen behind them and 'Debaser' rips through the speakers and asults the ears of everyone in the room.
The last time I saw the Pixies was Meadowbank, Edinburgh, 2005. This show blew Edinburgh out of the water. I actually bought the CD of that show - I only wish this one had been recorded.
And so for the next 45 mins, for me, they re-invigorated an album that I thought I knew backwards.
The crowd remain totally appreciative throughout.
If I was to be unreasonably picky I would say that I was hoping for a few of the songs to overlap to maintain some of the momentum of the album - but, probably the main reason for this not happening is that they ply with such power and conviction that Frank and Joey seemed to need varying degrees of retuning between tracks. The end result being that the album, to my ears, is flawlessly reproduced in it's entirety.
Kim periodically made quips or let us know where we were in the album - 'That's side one!' - 'halfway through side two...'
Despite what i've seen on YouTube of the Dublin shows, Frank said nothing on mic as far as I can recall, it was Kim all the way.
And so the band leave for a brief moment and return for the encore of 'Wave of Mutilation - UK Surf' and 'Into the White'
Into the White was an inspired choice to close with... but with a wave of the hand they are gone.
At 5 mins it was an unusually short set, but in no way was I disappointed. If that was how they wanted to play it I was totally happy by song 5 so another 16 songs later I wasn't going to complain.
However, Glasgow wasn't ready for them to go just yet and the house lights stayed down to the point that it would have been the cruelest end to the evening...
I don't know how long we waited because I was just willing the lights to stay down but come back they did... but in a bizarre twist that changed the whole dynamic of the evening, taking it a step away from the rest of the show, once the band were on the stage and as the crowd roared in appreciation the house lights went up! And they stayed up for the rest of the show!
And then, just in case there were the remains of any niggling doubts that this was a cash in show from a band who were playing a calculated move upon it's fans, this section of the show would have chewed up those thoughts like a hunk of meat in the jaws of a rabid dog.
If the Pixies had been in top gear all evening they now switched on the nitro!
'Holiday Song', 'Nimrod's Son', 'Caribou', 'Broken Face', 'Something Against You', 'Vamos', 'Isla De Encanta'
I sensed a collective feeling that every song could have been the last, every opening chord was another gift that was savored and, in my mind at least, a tiny fantasy that this might actually go on all night until Frank has played every song they all know!
But all good things must come to an end...
Kim and Frank seemed to discuss for a minute or so - maybe it was just signifying that the end was nigh, but finally KKim approached the mic to reveal that they 'were tossing a coin, for mine or his...' - who knows what he would have picked, but I s'pose we'll never know because she won and we were treated to 'Where is my mind'.
I don't think anyone could imagine it any other way but who knows what was in the screaming twisted mind of 'Black Francis'.
So, turns out I was right after 15 mins - best gig ever, by anyone. The show by which all other will be measured. The show that, when others leave the stage after an encore, i'll say, 'but do you remember when the Pixies did that second encore in Glasgow, 2009..?'
To the people of Dublin who were not quite so lucky - try to be content with what you had, I was perfectly happy to go at the end of Doolittle if that was the way it was to be - so try not to feel cheated, or hard done by.
But, to the people of Glasgow I say - we were there and we saw it and judging by the comments on twitter this morning we all came away feeling the same way - epic show, never to be forgotten. Roll on Bossanova!

In case you are in any doubt, I didn't set this up, but it turned up on twitter this morning...

Sorry, just moving my post from the stage times thread:

Just back from the SECC gig, third time I'd seen the Pixies after Meadowbank gig in '05 and Isle of Wight earlier this year, and best night by a mile, best gig I've ever been to full stop. Ten minute multimedia intro thingy which consisted of Un Chien Andalou and then the same setlist as reported in Dublin (4 b-sides, Doolittle and an encore of a further two b-sides) then after the house lights had come up the band re-emerged and Kim said something along the lines of the following, "Remember the last time we played here in 1991 or something and we only played for 15 minute before the stage collapsed? Well tell your parents we finished the gig". They then played a further 8 songs (what I can remember The Holiday Song, Nimrod's Son, Isla De Encanta, Something Against You, Caribou, Broken Face, Vamos, Where Is My Mind?, not essentially in that order) with the house lights up. Crowd was well up for it tonight, band seemed to really enjoy themselves too, Charles must be a very proud man on nights like this, well done sir.

I'd just like to add to the above posts on last nights gig at the SECC. I was indeed a pretty spectacular night, and everyone left very satisfied. Probably the best performance I have seen by them in person.

When I saw them in 2004 at Brixton on the 3rd night I kind of left feeling a little bit let down. I just felt then that they didn't give it their full effort, or maybe they just had a bad night. It was as though they were just going through the motions, just one more night to go after this. You can't blame them for that I suppose it must get quite tedious for a band playing the same songs every night.

But this time they really gave it their best, and came across like they really wanted to please their fans. Musically they were as tight as they could ever have been in their hey day, and it was nice to hear Kim throwing in a few comments in between songs. They didn't really talk much when I saw them in 2004, but this time they paced the gig better and sounded like they were having a lot of fun. I liked the comments Kim made about the 1991, 'You can all tell your mom and dad we came back." Kim was the star of the night in my mind, and her vocals were on top form, as were FB's (aren't they always) and it was also nice to hear Dave singing a bit in La La Love you!

And of course the encore was a real treat and way more than I had hoped for. At one point I was thinking that they were actually going to play the remaining songs from the 1991 that weren't played! I suppose minus the Doolittle set it almost could have been that, only they sadly didn't play anything from Bossanova or Trompe le Monde, But If I had known they were going to give as a special encore like that I would have moved further to the front and had a bit more of a jump about. Well, I still got Amsterdam to go!

Personally I would have liked to have heard tails as well, I'd guess if there was really a tails it would probably have been Motorway to Roswell, which would have also been a really great track to finish with.

I've got some recordings of Weird at my School, Bailley's Walk, Manta Ray and Silver and some of the back up band Sons & daughters which I will try and get on YouTube as soon as possible. Could have recorded more but I didn't want the standing holding a camera throughout the songs to impinge on my enjoyment of the gig too much. They're not great quality, but good enough. I just wanted to get some recordings of some of the other less well known tracks that they don't play so often.

Definitely worth the shit train ride back to Edinburgh and flying back to Dublin today. Had such a great time, I was literally the first person in the door of the building :P
The encore was the best part. I didn't hear till Saturday evening that they played Where Is My Mind in Dublin, so I wasn't what to expect, so I was savouring every song they played as if it was the last.

So damn good :D

Anyone recall the thing Kim said half way through side one? She made some joke with the other band members about 'smoking pot' or something, but I cannot remember her exact words. It was just nice to get a mention.

I just put Silver up on YouTube, but no sooner had I done so than I found out other people have put up recording of all the songs I did in far better quality, so I wont bother posting that here. I have just uploaded a couple of songs from Sons & Daughters instead though if anyone is interested.

The 2nd encore explained (from the horses mouth) via twitter:

RT @gilabot: @joeysantiago Why the extended encore atGlasgow?19 years ago the barricade broke after 3 songs and we had to stop at the SECC.

So due to the missfortune of Pixies fans 19years ago we were treated to a mental session of 8 additional songs. I hope they do the same in London though...

Anyone manage to get half time drinks in at the SECC?

I spent so long in the queue at the toilets, by the time I came out the queue to the bar was three miles long, so I decided to just get a bottle of water from the burger bar, which ended up being poured into a plastic cup for Health & Safety reasons so I couldn't keep it in my pocket throughout the gig.

Next time I go to a gig like that I'm sneaking in a few mini-bar whisky bottles, I was way too sober for the encores.
