It's been in the pipeline for a very long time, but the first teaser trailer is here for the long awaited Avatar
http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/avatar/
Does it get the fb.net thumbs up or down

Some of it looks great, the alien dudes later in the trailer look a bit dodgy. |

I've got tickets to see this on Sunday. So far the reviews are quiet positive.

I've read a few relatively positive reviews but worryingly I'm yet to read anyone mention anything about a great story. All I've come across is reviewers impressed by the 3D.
Personally I won't be seeing it. Mainly because I'm put off by the hype but also because the trailer looks like it's a cut scene from a particularly expensive computer game. |

I've heard the story is similar to Dances With Wolves and The Last Samurai, that's why it's not meant to be a revolutionary new story or anything. I think it's more about "the world James Cameron has created" (etc)

Unfortunately (for me) its that world and its blue inhabitants that puts me off having watched the trailer.
Given the apparently amazing 3D, it's also unfortunate that it has come at the end of a year where the film industry has shoved that extra dimension in my face at every opportunity and thoroughly succeeded in making me totally sick of it. |

Isn't it really a 4D movie because it has a time length as well? And therefore we've been watching 3D movies all these years. |

So let's get this straight, to fully appreciate the film I'm going to need some kind of new 4D glasses with an alarm clock incorporated into them? |

Seems way over hyped. I'm not sure how it can live up to it. |

All the reviews i've read confirmed what i suspected - a cardboard film with a huge budget. I really have no desire to see this.

If people love 3D so much, why don't they go to the theater? |

the listing of Cameron's film glory at the end of the trailer puts me off, not that they're bad films. ok, True Lies is. and no mention of The Abyss? double put-off.

Here here, and these people who masturbate - why don't they just find a nice girl and get their rocks off!
Oh and Avatar, looks like a shitty movie full of millions of Jar Jar binks. |

LOL... and see these people who read newspapers! Why don't they go and bloody find out for themselves, instead of relying on journalists and reporters to bring them the news all the time! |

I saw it last night, and even if you try to ignore all the hype, it still is a very good movie. I did feel that maybe some plot points needed a bit more depth (like how they actually came to be able to create a Na'vi) But it's very enjoyable.

3D. I've seen a few 3D movies this year, all CGI (Up, a chrictmas carol, ice age) But this is the first where it was actual real people (...er, and CGI people) and it looked great If anyone here hasn't seen stereoscopic 3D, it seems to but a field of depth in the picture.

i saw it in old fashioned 2d. i enjoyed the movie. good escape from reality with not-so-subtle undertones, decent war scenes and the CGI is pretty awesome. peace out.

I saw it in 3D and in my opinion it was blue alien boredom. Sometimes I enjoy a movie that's all cliche but not this time. And while it was well made the lack of visionary visuals only added to my disinterest. Even the action at the end was dull. A worse movie going experience than Transformers 2, only because I enjoyed making fun of Michael Bay's movie. The 3D glasses are nice though.

i saw it (in 3D) and was surprised to find that i did not dislike it. the story is simple and cliche, but it's well executed and the world he created on film is undeniably phenomenal. if you're into fantasy / sci fi i think it's safe to say you'll enjoy it
even if James Cameron is a prick

yeah, i agree. i mean maybe James C didn't need to say "fuck off" and call him an asshole etc.. but i think that guy was baiting him. why was someone videotaping the whole thing? |

You have to think, who would know when he's arriving at an airport? TMZ would. So they probably got that guy to go and cause a scene.
But Cameron reacted completely wrong.

I thought it looked beautiful in 3D...have never seen 3D in a full movie before. I really enjoyed the movie. Couldn't believe how long it was. After thinking the aliens looked stupid in the trailer, I thought they worked/looked fine in the movie itself. In fact they were pretty hot if you get over the fact that they are like 10 feet tall.

I think dismissing a movie because people are excited about it (read: hype) is just like dismissing a movie that nobody's ever heard of because it's not popular (so how can it be good if nobody's heard of it?). The same could be said about anything I suppose, including music.
I was blown away by the movie, to be honest. Yes, partly by the visuals. But I found myself wanting to know more about this world, this place, this culture; I found myself excited as Jake was discovering this new world and wanting more. The story was fine, it wasn't anything that will make you sit thinking late at night but it was entertaining and the sensation of taking a side against humanity is a little disturbing if not interesting.
I'm sure James Cameron is overrated, and I know that I haven't seen any of this hype as I've been largely in the middle of nowhere for some time now, but it was phenomenal to me and at the least I'd expect it to be decent to you.
Oh and James Horner needs to write some new music if they're going to keep paying him to score movies. I suppose it's better to rip yourself off than somebody else but seriously. You know it's him whenever the dramatic points in the movie comes because he only has one trick: a four note bullet point. It's the musical equivalent of a writer that, in any dramatic scene in any circumstance, always has his characters say "uh oh".

Not a huge fan of 3d computer movies, but I might watch it when it comes out on DVD. James Cameron broke his own record for highest-grossing movie of all time...pure craziness. I never saw Titanic either, lol |

Well, the fact that it's been successful is no reason to see it but the fact that it's pretty good and entertaining is. See it in theatres and why not 3d. Worth it for the experience, but just my opinion.

I guess you guys didn't notice but that was Meryl Streep playing Mother Aywa.
Some mixed messages for sure but overall: good was my impression. Cynics need not apply.
We killed our mother. And now we're gonna kill yours. Feel the shame? Keep laying rail? Both stupid!
