Great show last night. It was advertised as an acoustic show, but it was plugged in tele the whole evening. The show started a little iffy because I was standing next to some dick who was basically making an ass out of himself and ended up getting run out by security. Anyway, I was with a friend I had not seen in a while and had a little more fun than I normally would so will most likely forget a few of songs and I do not remember the order.......
Los Angeles Water Song California Bound Bullet Cactus My Veloria I Burn Today Tight Black Rubber Holiday Song Burnt out Rock and Roll When They Come to Murder Me Lolita I Heard Ramona Sing
Yep, I am definitely forgetting a bunch of songs. Oh well. He was drinking champagne, said he was not going to be chatty, but ended up being a little chatty. Fantastic show. Played two songs after he said he was done and left the stage, and even though the whole place was screaming at the top of their lungs he would not come back out. Pretty sure they are really strict about how late you can play there, though. The audience(except for the guy that got tossed) was really cool and incredibly enthusiastic. My friend is not a huge fan, had never seen Frank and was suitably blown away, which is always nice.
I would pay 20 bucks to go see the same show tonight. |

I saw him as Black Francis at Nightstage in Cambridge, MA after Bossanova but before Trompe came out. He had a Les Paul I think and he walked on stage and said "Shhhhhhh ........ solo acoustic show." He then launched into Crackity Jones playing as loud as he would if the band was behind him. The whole show was like that. That's cool that he did the show with his Tele. |

I remembered a couple of more songs.
shrimp song two reelers
Shrimp Song was good, Two Reelers was fn awesome.
I love the sound he gets out of his tele, so that was pretty fantatstic. His Vox amps are kinda pretty actually. They were white with tanish trim.

I agree with you Apesy. I have the same take as you -- loved Grand Duchy Sunday, and was unexpectedly left unmoved by the show on Monday. I never felt like BF and the audience had a good connection. I thought Sing for Joy was the clear highlight. I liked the acoustic show 3 years ago a lot more. Maybe the simple truth is that the 2006 'Comber show set the bar too high.
Meanwhile, Threshold Apprehension, a song I have always been meh on, was completely awesome Sunday as performed by Grand Duchy. That set rocked and sounded completely fresh. |

It's just been the same old covers and the same Pixies songs for years. Sorry to be negative, and I appreciate I'm looking from the perspective of a slightly obsessive fan. Casual showgoers aren't going to care, and probably really enjoy it. I suppose that matters the most. |

I would agree that the 06 show was better, but that would be a hard act to follow. I thought the crowd was really enjoying the show so am not sure what connection there should have been.
Thanks for the complete set list as I needed a memory jog. Would definitely like to hear more about the bad review as I seemed to have a different opinion, but I am used to that. My buzz on may have made the show more favorable, but I really thought it rocked.
And hey, when he mentioned that they put out one of Violet's picks and I jokingly yelled out "what is it not manly enough for you?" he seemed to take it in stride. I thought he was funny and having a pretty good time, but there again the buzz may have made it seem so.

I thought the show was out of this world. It seemed to me that perhaps the audience was expecting all Pixies songs but I thought the set list was great. The intro to Two Reelers was funny and he was clearly having a great time. They guitar stuff was great. He has a gift (yes, like this is news....). Great from beginning to end. I was definitely singing for joy....unlike this guy who did a write up for the Cape Cod Times...

Oh...as for the audience....I thought they just wanted to hear Pixies....being a Frank Black fan, I was digging every minute but it seemed that some people were disappointed with some of the other songs....which I found really strange since his post-Pixies work has been at least as good, if not better..... |

I would really like to hear your review as well, Apesy. As long as it has nothing to do with someone yelling about Frank not being manly enough, or something like that.
One thing I would like to say about people screaming for Pixies tunes, and I was not one of them as I know he will oblige anyway, is that this was billed as "Black Francis from the Pixies". As this is how all of the solo shows have been billed, I think, I am not surprised there were a lot of people expecting to hear Pixies songs, of which he played a lot. I can only assume that he or his management had something to do with how it was billed. I also have yet to be at a Frank show that there was not people wanting Pixies, so am not sure why this show would have been any different.
Maybe we should be complaining about the people that were wanting Frank Black songs at a Black Francis concert! |

Yeah, normally I do not yell out requests, but becuase I had read that he had immediately played a song after someone yelled it out I thought I would try. I would have loved to hear Fitzgerald, but was hoping for a Western Star, myself.
I normally do not heckle my idols, either, so I guess it was a rare night. |

I'm lucky, I live in San Francisco so I get to see the man at least two times a year if not much more. All told Pixies, Catholics, solo, Francis, etc I've seen him somewhere between thirty and forty times. Rarely is it anything other than great, but there are off shows. If he's not feeling it for whatever reason you can tell. Since the release of Bluefinger the set lists have become very predictable, but I don't mind. These are 99.9% great songs and most nights a 110% great performance. I guess my point is everybody has off nights, I've seen some subpar shows from him, but nothing that would keep me from going next time. I have to admit, however, that I do miss the 'anything can happen' days of the Catholics.

When I saw that Frank was playing the Beachcomber again I thought the same thing I did a couple years ago. "Dan go to the show. Drive. I bet their food is really good. See Frank play along the coast. I didn't. Stayed in New Jersey. Read some comments.

Surprised he didn't play 'Coastline'. Hey, for $20 how can you beat it? Hell, I would pay that to see a 'worst of' night. Although, I have to say, I know I had a couple of glasses of wine but he seemed to me to be in very good form Monday. I recorded a couple of sound bites on my phone and they seem to bear me out. This was my 5th show and I have never been disappointed. |

whoops, it's been more than 2 weeks. probably should state my opinion now
which is basically everything ATBNG said. frank seemed bored, the audience was rude/restless, and he drank, and became increasingly sloppy. but yeah, somehow even though it was near the end sing for joy was the absolute best. i heard ramona sing was the only pre-bluefinger song i'd never heard live before, and i was really hoping if his set were to be pixies heavy i'd at least get to hear ed is dead. pretty bitchin' version of crackity jones, though
starting with brackish boy he started playing "two-fers": 2 songs about his college roommate, 2 about france/new orleans, 2 about california, and 2 folk songs. i don't think sing for joy and wimm? were noted as being related thematically, but maybe?

Interesting... I suppose there's a similar chord progression between those two though!
