Came across this story about how Nirvana's "Smells like Teen Spirit" was rated the 'greatest' song of the last 25 years.

I would hope that any further reporting about this includes Cobain's admission that it was in his words "a pixies ripoff".

I have lost all objectivity on that song because it has been played to death, but, the GREATEST song of the last 25 years? I think not.

I'd certainly nominate Stairway over Smells Like Teen Spirit. But then again, I wouldn't nominate either.

Ridiculous list. Best song? By what definition? Influence? Are they somehow rating the "quality" of a melody? I mean, the little survivor's on here are one thing, people just select their least favourite song of a particular bunch. How was this done? Here's a list of EVERY song recorded in the last 25 years. Pick your top 100. I suppose these lists are just for fun, but the songs they invariably leave out make them criminally flawed. I mean, Teen Spirit? Sure, being a Frank psycho makes me a little biased, but come on, how many times does someone have to say, "I wrote this song in attempt to write a song that sounds just like another band. This is a rip off." And it's a fine song, I have no problem with it other than the fact that is was nauseatingly overplayed. There are better songs ON THAT RECORD, let alone recorded in the last 25 years.

The BEST song of ALL time has got to be 'Another Day In Paradise' by Phil Collins, hmmm...or maybe the Status Quo's 'Rocking All Over The World'. Franky could lesson a lesson or two from those boys.

Hey Bazza, I think you'll find that there's a bit of the old 'irony' going on in some of these postings.

I hate all these TOP <number> <category/item> of the <timeframe/era> lists for all the reasons listed above. If you're going by anything other than concrete record sales, or other mathematic formula (similar to what Billboard/BMI/ASCAO) uses, it's totally subjective and really is a pale reflection of basiclly the TOP (selling) (category) of the (specific defined timefrema). It implies that "Beat It" is a great song because it sold the most. No, Beat It had a great package all around, the beat, the MARKETING, the nororiety of the singer and his production company, etc.

What is a great song? That which speaks to an individual and moves them, reflects their feelings, or acts as an adjunct. That which artistically freezes and thus preserves a moment, a feeling, etc. That which brings people together in some sort of commonality. The greatest songs are those which are in your heart.

These lists are such an argument starter, but I guess they do have value in that they prompt conversations such as these, that force us to really think about what we like and why we like it.

Yep, another in a long line lame lists put together by those demographic wizards over at VH1. Just having Britny Spears on the list cancels out any relevance whatsoever. I count only 10 songs out of my collection, and maybe another 10 that I could listen to without having to undergo de-programming therapy.

Plus, why would they interview Lee Ann Rimes about her opinions for the "I Love the 80's" series when she wasn't even born til 1980?

This is off topic here but did anyone see that new Jewel video. I think she should win the award for the biggest sellout of the last 25 years.

I was shocked and appalled, honestly. I was never a Jewel fan, but at least I respected her. That really made me sick, and she digusts me. Utterly pathetic, she is. If you want to sell records, make a good album. If you can't do that, don't make records.

Agreed,
I didn't mind her before, its not my thing but it totally worked for her. I just can't believe they actually brought out the firemen to hose her down. How cheesy.

If you think the best thing about Jewel is her body, you have to applaud the new direction.

I like "Slow Emotional Replay" from The The. It's a perfect melody.
