No Toronto date? Looks like there's room in the schedule between boston and cleveland, maybe a late announce?

man I will be in the US around this time, but miss every show :(

My biggest hope is that he slots in an LA show after Oregon
.

I think that would pretty much make my trip...

Since he lives in Portland, it would seem to likely that Portland is the end of the tour. But, who knows.

Calgary article - July 6 (I beat Carl!)

Black Francis performs Tuesday at the Grand theatre

Pixies frontman Black Francis (a. k. a. Charles Thompson, a. k. a. Frank Black) is set to make a solo acoustic appearance in Edmonton prior to a string of performances on the East Coast with his new band Grand Duchy, which features his wife Violet Clark.

Grand Duchy's debut album, Petits Fours, has already drawn comparisons to the seminal indie rock of the Pixies, whose entire catalogue was recently re-released as a limited-edition box set entitled Minotaur. (The Pixies will perform one of their album, Doolittle, in its entirety on an upcoming European tour.)

We caught sup with Francis over the phone from his home in Portland, Ore., to talk about Grand Duchy, Minotaur, the cult of Michael Jackson and the death of the music industry.

Q: How are you?

A: I can't stop obsessing about Michael. You just think, 'Well, I'm not going to follow this nonsense,' and then it's 11 o'clock at night and both my wife and I are on our BlackBerrys -- 'I wonder if there's anything new. . . .'

Q: Some would say the passing of Michael Jackson is--for lack of a better expression--the final nail in the music industry's coffin. Would you agree?

A: It's interesting you should say that because I had the same thought the other day. It's not by design, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see more than one article about the music business that will use his passing as a metaphor for what was and is now, finally, dead and over.

Q: Could it also be the end of the artist as mythical/cult figure?

A: I'm trying to think of someone off the top of my head that isn't an old-timer. I guess I can't think of one. Even the Marilyn Mansons and the Trent Reznors of this world, for whatever reason, seem pretty normal. I think that the world has been exposed to so much of the showbiz, the costumes, the special effects, that we're immune to all of that. It doesn't seem edgy anymore; it's just entertainment.

Q: For those who enjoy the "cult" of the Pixies, the band's new limited edition boxed set, Minotaur, is quite a massive piece of work--gold-plated CDs, vinyl platters, a DVD and some pretty impressive artwork--and the whole thing costs $500.

A: It's this weird marriage of the Pixies and this guy Vaughan Oliver. Vaughan Oliver was the only person outside the Pixies that visually represented the band. That's what this whole box set is about -- it's really about graphics and artwork and packaging.

We deliberately tried not to find 'bonus' material or the B-sides or whatever because this is all about high art--art that you put up on your wall or you see in a gallery sort of thing. Our five records, that's the manifesto; our document, ourart-- not the B-sides, not the bonus tracks, not the unreleased stuff, not the demos. This is the final artistic, over-the-top dressing on that manifesto. It's definitely not for everybody.

Q: Speaking of bonus material, you're headed into the studio to do some extra recording for a Grand Duchy single? How does that feel?

A: I don't know, man. It always just feels like some lame, desperate attempt by the record business to try and give the song a little bit more of a 'fighting chance' to 'break out of the pack,' you know what I mean?

I don't think I've ever released a single in my entire life that has really amounted to a hill of beans other than the Pixies' Here Comes Your Man (in 1989).MTV was still powerful at that time and they showed our video for six weeks and, as a result of that, we sold more records. Not millions of records--about 60,000 records. And it got me out of being arrested for marijuana possession in Texas because the cop recognized me. That's the big perk I got: a literal 'get out of jail free' card.

I think sometimes Violet misunderstands me and thinks I have a cynical view but, really, it's just a realistic view. I've always been a sort of alternative, indie rock guy anyway. What do I have to do with getting on the radio or having a big hit? I never even intended to go down that path.

Even with an indie label-- 'We're going to do a single, we're going to do a video, we're going to do an emphasis track, we're going to try and make this thing fly!' I'm always on the side going, 'OK, whatever you guys want to do, man.' It's been like that for me for 20 years. The record business is over, effectively, and they're all downloading this stuff for free anyway. 'You need a bonus track for iTunes!'Why? I just don't even get it.

Q: Maybe building yourself a statue like Michael Jackson did would work better?

A: That's actually more clever. I'm just thinking, 'Man, talk about not thinking outside the box.' I just feel the record business is so in the box it's not even funny.

Haven't heard who would be opening...surely someone.

I'm going too (at least I have a ticket...). I'm just over 2.5 hours away and the wife wont be home (to watch the kids) until 6:00 pm, so needless to say i'm VERY interested in whether there is an opening act and about what time Mr. Frank will be going on.

anyone know if there has been an opener for the other shows? (i avoid the individual threads b/c i don't want to see any setlists beforehand...)

thanks

I think there's been openers. Maybe call the venue and find out what time Frank goes on. You should be able to get there on time. Good luck!

Hi, there was an opener in Minny. I can't tell you how long it lasted or what his name was. It seemed like a normal time. Maybe around 45 min?? I am sorry but I was in the zone waiting for Frank/BF. Hope you have fun!

There was also an opener at both the Madison and Milwaukee shows. Milwaukee was also a full sit down show, meaning there were tables and chairs for the audience. Frank didn't wear socks at the Milwaukee show. He was drinking wine at both shows. Also played harmonica on several songs at both shows. I don't recall the positions of the stars and planets either night, you can look that up online I'm sure...

Just so you know, I just called the venue (Avalon in Easton, MD) and doors open at 7:30, show at 8 pm. No opener. Better get your wife home quicker!

I'll have a "triathlon" t-shirt on, I think, if anyone wants to find me!

The Pitch Wayward Blog was spot on. Man, it was so hot in there. He did forget to mention the pouring rain and nearby lightning strikes while standing outside. Frank did say to the crowd that they would have to indulge him while he played non-Pixies tunes. I didn't know about the show until four hours before. It was sold out and at the last moment us lingering diehards without tickets were let inside.
