i currently have 53 genres, i want to get it down to about 12-18. what genres do you guys have in your ipod. i changed all my "alternative & punk" to "alternative". but i also have seminal alternative (pixies, husker du, replacements, pere ubu), also, i got british pop (cast, oasis, blur etc,) but i don't know where to put some of the newer british pop/rock acts like coldplay, embrace, manics. also, i've got like kaiser chiefs and futureheads and art brut classified as "modern british rock". is sigur ros, polyphonic spree, go team! "experimental" or "conceptual". how old does rock have to be before it is classic? who exactly are the grunge bands of the 90's? Is Billy Idol "punk"? HELP!!! i classify fb, bob mould, chris mars, tommy stinson, paul westerberg and others as "post alternative singer/songwriter". i kinda like that. and when old punks form new bands (shellac, public image limited, etc.) are they still punk?

There was an article here defining a band versus the genre
of UK Science Museum Rock.
I'm not sure what this is or how it differs from Math Rock,
or what Math Rock is or what it would take to be genre
busting. |

I kind of remember that. husker du and shellac being "math rock" - i don't have that as a genre.

I guess it depends on what your goal is. Are you labelling the band into a genre for accuracy, (for example where husker du = math rock and NOT rock), or are you labelling for listenings sake, (where husker du = rock and NOT rap).
If the latter, I would go in the opposite direction to organize your massive iTunes library, from top to bottom, where you break up the general genres into smaller ones, instead of bottom to top, where you try to classify a subgenre into a genre. Try starting with "Rock", and go from there.
In my case, I organize my library with less genres, just so that I can hit random on a genre and get a good size selection of bands I'm interested in. When one genre gets too big where you rarely hear certain bands, break up that genre into subgenres. (Also, it's probably best to stay consistent with labelling bands into the same genre, even though they technically can belong to multiple genres). |
