This movie proves that Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Uhuru, Sulu and Chekov are THE mythical characters in all STAR TREK canon...and by STAR TREK returning to these roots, thank god people will lose interest in The Next Generation, and all that other crap. Everyone in the movie was great...they TOTALLY defined the characters without mimicing them, and the audience was swept away in the performances. The kid who plays Chekov is HILARIOUS! Sgt. Getraer's son Chris Pine is fantastic...I think this is going to make this guy a big name very soon. And Zachary Quinto who plays Spock...what an amazing, painfully heartfelt performance. The special effects are definately astounding (the IMAX images making you feel dizzy), the music is wonderful...Nimoy (who makes a crucial appearance) has reached almost a God-like status as Spock, which shouldn't work, but undoubtably does. Spock in his advanced age has become more human than a human, and it is quite touching, to see Spock has finally made peace within himself, and embraces all-things compassion. It is a really good movie. I could go on and on, but I wont.
I started watching STAR TREK in '74 during it's initial re-run boom. I was three. I remember vividly watching it with my dad on our little B&W tv...overwhelmed, scared, delighted, and mystified. I was a closet Trekkie in my teen years (you got beat up for that shit in those days!), and then was forced to be content with TNG, DS9, VGR, and ENTRPRS, because the original was gone.
JJ ABRAMS has brought it back to lay waste everything since the original!!!

I didn't think it was possible but you made me interested in it. Similar to you, I started watching the original series in daily rerun form in '76 at the age of 9. I have seen the '60s episodes countless times, watched less than two episodes of TNG and never bothered with the rest. But I might have to check this out. Thanks for the review.

i saw it today. i have similar story to trans and blt. sittin' on dad's lap watching it, even getting nightmares when i was 3-4 years old. when star wars came out, i liked it so much better, so kinda didn't give a shit about star trek (liked wrath of khan the best of the original 5 movies).
but this movie is awesome. i might go again to see it in Imax.

Do you think it is suitable for a nine year old to go see? My son wants to see it...he's seen plenty of video game blood, but as far as movies go he usually sticks to the kids stuff.

There is a lot of intense space action stuff (ships, explosions, phasers, etc.) and people do die (fights, explosions, etc.), but there really is no excessive gore like flowing blood or guts.
It's not THE NEXT GENERATION action and violence...it's more STAR WARS-ish action and violence...loud, flashy, and intense...fantasy intense.
Does that help?

Saw this yesterday, really enjoyed it. In fact, I got a rush of excitement in the opening sequence I haven't gotten for a long time watching a movie, and I'm not even a big Trek fan. Amazing visuals, lot of thrilling moments, and the cast are great. |

It started here yesterday(saw it again today).Used to watch the original re-runs here in Puerto Rico in the mid 70's growing up.In Spanish the series is called "Viaje a Las Estrellas" loosely traslated "Voyage To The Stars".A great tribute to the original and something Star Wars fans can admire because it stands on it's own.The casting department needs to be commended, great selections and a BIG applause to JJ Abrams-May he Live Long and Prosper \\ //_

I reckon a lot of the spaceships designs were borrowed/inspired by Babylon 5.
Great film though, did a good job.

Nobody even remotely critical about this film?
It's fun to watch, but what about the the story issues? Aside from it beeing a bit thin and more fitting for an average episode, what about this alternate timeline thing?
And what a lame ice monster...
Apart from that I loved it. |

Yeah, I guess I could agree with the story issues, but I was so swept away by the characters and their familiar interaction that none of that bothered me at all. And my 9 year old gave it a 10 out of 10 so that was good, Really made me want to watch the original show with him just so he would know what happened. He had a bit of a struggle with Spock talk, and I had to do some translating some during the movie lol.

That looks like a particular coffee shop, and that coffee shop's patrons.
