i thought there was one around but couldn't find it.
anyone watch guy maddin flicks? i mentioned this in the pixies - winnipeg thread but it deserves to be mentioned again.
just saw "my winnipeg". ya, and i'm from winnipeg!
this from a review...
http://www.time.com/time/specials/2008/top10/article/0,30583,1855948_1863826_1863829,00.html
"In 1942 the city of Winnipeg held an "If Day," dressing its burghers up as Nazis to show the locals some of the terrors of life under the Third Reich. For Canadian deranged-genius filmmaker Guy Maddin, every day is an If Day: his movies transform his hometown reality into comedy-dramas of sibling rivalry and family life that would give Freud the creeps. So Maddin is not the most reliable reporter. In spite or because of that, My Winnipeg is a trip: a "docufantasia" that mixes the city's history with Maddin family values. He moves back into the home where he grew up, hiring actors to play his relatives — including Ann Savage, the notorious harridan of the 1945 cheapo-noir classic Detour, as his mom. Filming in black-and-white, streaking the frame, explaining the action with silent-movie intertitles, Maddin must want us to understand that, in movies, nothing is real, and everything is true. Oh, and My Winnipeg: it's weird-hilarious."
it was pretty good. i got to check out his other flicks now.
and i watched tropic thunder last week. that was pretty funny....extremely funny...i've got to work on those tc dance moves...

I still tear up whenever someone talks about the Arena. What he said about the MTS Centre having been built to eliminate hockey from Winnipeg is something I've been raving about for years. A snip of the manhood.
The movie was better than real. I remember some construction around Donald Street where they tore through about eight feet of pavement and exposed either the tops of the old sewers or cobblestone. I know about buried creeks and how the Seine is pushed under the floodway.
And the whole thing about dreaming about old houses and maps of the city that exist in your mind. Uncanny. A life where metaphor is truer than reality.
I will need to watch it a few times, it's not going to give up all its layers easily. [The crotch of the continent, hehe.]
What name did he give the gay bison? Was it Tatonka Apis? I didn't quite catch that.
What was the whole Orange-Jello thing about? I've only been in the Paddlewheel a few times.
I was hunting down some of the less believable things that Maddin puts out in the movie.
I was shocked that there was a Happyland. Although it was never trampled by gay bison there were two stampedes of elephants. And I found mention of a few other amusement parks, like River Park at the Osbourne Street bridge on the north side of the river that had a big wooden coaster.
I was disappointed that I couldn't find any mention of subterranean parallel rivers in native folklore. I suspect that it could be true.
And the Sherbrook pool doesn't have 3 pools on three levels, I'm pretty sure, anyways, I think that's pure imagery. It did have the strangest hair-dryers when I was young.
Whittier Park seems to have closed its horse track around 1925 when Polo Park was built and I couldn't find any mention of frozen horses in 1926. Frozen bison pulled from rivers were a food source for some tribes. 13 is a good masonic number, and there are lots prominent horse statues around. [Let me put that together, making monuments out of dead horses.]
I grew up being told about the Arlington Street bridge having been built for the Nile, this is probably not true although it doesn't fit its situation properly either. There are very steep ramps that the old cars would not make on ice, and it's too narrow to turn around.
I was surprised that he didn't mention the Perimeter, which would have worked well with his imagery. And a whole movie without curling is impossible!
[I will stop there for now.] |

Last night I watched Glory Road. The film was o.k but the story of the '66 NCAA Championship had me googling and youtubing for hours afterwards. I still am today. I wish the final against Kentucky was shown after the film. If only to please little old me.
Thursday night I watched Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain. Again. |

i need to watch it a few more times....i think you get a much different take on the movie if you know nothing at all about winnipeg. living here makes it much more personal. and my wife and i were doing the same...is this real or is this fantasy..i really enjoyed the st.mary's catholic school girl bit cause that is where my wife graduated from..the reviews for the movie were pretty amazing- 93% on rotten tomatoes..and it won a few awards..best documentary at the san francisco film critics circle...

it's like two completely different films Mos Def looks like he is waiting for the lift while the other guy appears to be truly frightened.

they're beginning filming the remake of
i liked the original (despite a little too much hype and my unintentional comparing to some of Lukas Moodysson's filming) and i'm curious to see its remote and familiar feel of 80's snowed-in Stockholm suburb transform into a Reagan-era Colorado setting. it's good that it won't be a remake of the film but use the book and go from there. looking forward to it. |

'Let the right one in' is such a little gem, with brilliant storytelling, great actors, a wonderfull score and great overall atmosphere, that I was shocked when I first heard that there were plans to do a "hollywood"-remake. It has such a unique feel about it and is just so damn good, why mess with this? No way is anyone able to recreate that. Especially with this vampire hype a la 'Twilight' going on.
But supposedly the book has much more layers the swedish film only touches or ignores at all (Eli's history and gender, Hakan's obsession with children) that it might be interesting to see these plotlines developed. But since the director plans to make it "very accessible to a wider audience", I'm still sceptical. |

maybe that meant cheaper tickets? i think it was really the producer's plan, and he does have to take care of the maths of the business world reality and something under $10mil is probably too narrow audience. i hope the director's plan holds up. |

"Let the right one in" is possibly the best horror-genre film I've ever seen - suspenseful, touching, beautifully written, shocking at times. The guy that's directing the pointless Hollywoood remake directed Cloverfield. I think it's nice that he's doing it for people who can't read subtitles or might be offended by the lack of perfect tits and teeth in the original. |

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE
I really enjoyed the beginning when the movie captured the emotional extremes of a young boy but after a while his interactions with the Wild Things grew dull. The film never recovered and I just wanted it to end. Nice cinematography and while I respect the attempt to make a movie about childhood free of Hollywood cliche (I think they succeeded at the beginning and the very very end) it's nothing I need to see again. |

i saw Paranormal activity and i liked the approach (as i did in that outdoors video ten years ago, and in Rec), but the acting was a little sub-convincing at times, broke the suspense. people supposedly shat themselves watching it. my underwear is still good, sadly. |

fumanbru, what duid you think of it? My friend and I rented it, watched for about 30 mins, and then lost interest and decided to watch it later and to watch the other movie we rented.
Friday my brother and I went to see Shutter Island. I thought it was good and well done and everything, I just think the story itself sucked (I haven't read the book) plus it was a real downer.

Got round to seeing Babel. Liked it. Realised why it divided critics and audiences - it's pretty much a mirror.

I loved Babel, I even watched it in Dutch subtitled which made it all the more off-beat for me. (my dutch is not that good, but I somehow still managed to follow the plot)
I just watched Dead Snow, a Norwegian cult horror move set in the snowy mountains. Fairly standards formula- a bunch of high school kids go for a vacation in a remote cabin, and end up getting butchered to death, this time by WW2 German nazi zombies. It's actually pretty good, a bit cheesy in places and suitably over the top, but also fun to watch and the whole premise and special effects make it quite creepy at times, almost Hitchcockian/Twilight Zone at times. |
