Babel was an absolute crock of shit - but a watch able crock of shit.
The director must have some pervy obsession with Japanese schoolgirl porno/Manga, the scenes of the movie set in Tokyo were just ridiculous If you've seen Japanese or Korean movies where they try to portray western popular culture and get it ‘so wrong’, well this is the same but in reverse.
I also saw ‘The Man who Shot Liberty Valance’ recently on TV it is a classic western apparently and that was also a crock of shit, why it is so lauded is beyond me. I think John Ford is an extremely overrated director, in my very humble opinion of course.

The lively witty ideas of Charlie Kaufman stupefied out of abstraction and made to match an awe-aspiring plot summary. And now half the world thinks the (eternal) sun shines out of Nolan's arse.
Nolan's next project will be a terribly clever looped movie of a terribly sophisticated chap searching his asshole for his fabled personality, without which he'll never be able to properly ponder on what he wants to be when he grows up.

Thought Memento was great, Batman Begins was a steaming pile of shit, and didn't bother watching any other Nolan flick. We kinda wanted to see Inception but I don't think we'll go.

The 5 minutes of Babel I saw didn't look too good. I hated 21 Grams.

Fairly standards formula- a bunch of high school kids go for a vacation in a remote cabin, and end up getting butchered to death, this time by WW2 German nazi zombies. It's actually pretty good, a bit cheesy in places and suitably over the top, but also fun to watch and the whole premise and special effects make it quite creepy at times, almost Hitchcockian/Twilight Zone at times.
Thanks for the tip. WW2 German nazi zombies are much funnier than WW2 German nazis. Speaking about over-the-top movies, I downloaded a bunch of them recently but haven't had time to watch them. Maniac, Maniac Cop, and The Machine Girl of which I have high hopes.

Only kidding. It's an ok action flick. I'm glad no one spoiled it for me. I liked following the later dream sections and the explanation about his wife fitted very well.

I purposely avoided any sort of publicity for it, simply because i wanted to know nothing going in. I will say though, the pacing at the start of the film was maybe a bit too fast

The Ghost Writer was fun. Starts and ends with a couple of tasty black jokes and the rest has this thoroughly ordinary feller trying to avoid harassment and get through the day. Good to see Polanski's as curious about folk as ever.

Van Diemen's Land- based on a true story. A group of British convicts serving hard labour in a penal colony in Tasmania in 1822 attempt to escape and end up in the wild with no food. The film is the story of how they try to survive the harsh conditions with little food or shelter. Not a bad film all in all, not a great deal happens in it i must say but enjoyable to watch, nice cinematography, fairly convincing portrayal. |

I thought Burn After Reading was awful, but this was at least watchable. I would have been sitting squarely in the middle of that cinema, had I been there. Ideally I would have liked also to have been stoned.
What is it about the coen brothers and ending films in really weird places? |

I just watched MicMacs, a french film by a guy called Jean Pierre Jeunet. Absolutely brilliant! The best french film I have ever seen. All the slap stick comedy of a good Coen Brothers movie, with a bit of Terry Gilliam thrown in for good measure. Highly polished story with a feel good ending, let's just say without spoiling it the bad guys get what's coming to them. If you don't check this film out immediately then you are a fool.

Just watched the remake of Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs. I thought it was watchable, but didn't really stray far from the original screenplay so it's hard to see what the point in remaking the film was at all. All the characters were played really well apart from goldilocks from True Blood, who is very handsome and all but not really much good at acting outside of his role as a vampire it seems. Nice touch with the new rape girl having heterchromia I thought, one blue eye, one brown eye. Now everytime I see a girl with this condition I'm going to assume she like it both ways.

I saw that movie as well and thought it was rubbish. BTW, and if you want to watch a really bad Peckinpah film, try the ‘Wild Bunch’ as it’s hilaroulsy bad.
I also watched the cinematic version of Dr. Zhivago recently. Has anybody else seen this? If not then don’t bother as it is 90% boring pointless crap with a couple of nice set pieces thrown in. Terrrible casting (Alec Guiness as a commie ham and Omar Sharif as the protaganist deserve particular mention). David Lean was a film maker who had really shot his bolt by this time.

I just watched The Iron Lady and was actually surprised at how good it was! Apart from a few moments here and there Streep totally nails it and deserved all the accolade she received for this performance. All the performances were top notch, plenty of humour, the whole film actually makes you feel sorry for the old bag! Would have been nice to see Arthur Scargill in there as well though lol |

two more from the last decade:
There Will Be Blood Tideland (ignore the critics, this is Terry Gilliam's best film)
I skipped The Hunger Games because it sounds too much like Battle Royale. |

Och it was just a load of pretentious waffle. Way too much fucking around with the shaky camera 'for effect', cutting between scenes too fast, it just made the whole film a chore to watch. Story was bullshit, and the costumes were a bit too Jean Paul Gaultier for my taste. My mate recommended it to me and he is a bit pissed that I didn't like it, he loved it. Can't agree on everything I suppose.
He also recommended A Handmaid's Tale as well, kind of similarish dystopian future reality what if the world turned out like this/we're all being controlled by the Illuminati type thing, a bit far fetched too but a far better film, quite harrowing in a way, for women mostly. Good story, undertones of lesbian BDSM fetishisms if you are into that sort of thing. It's from 1990 so outwith the period of fims asked for. |

cliffs: The Invention of Lying
Handmaid's Tale was a book I was forced to read about 20 years ago. Of course, Atwood is brilliant [and it's the origin of the name The Breeders], but I don't remember much about the book and I wont see the movie.
I did see Gilliam's Imaginarium movie, I liked that, I will seek Tideland, it's on my list.
See here http://nfb.ca
My Winnipeg. If I start watching more films they will be like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aY9BtROpNQ4
I'm looking at a list of top 50 movies from each year and I've hardly seen any. These were ok. A James Bond movie, Frost/Nixon, Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek, Moneyball.
I've seen more comedies (I like comedies) The Invention of Lying was really quite good, probably the best one I could recommend that you will see. I like goofball movies, The Other Guys.
My mother really liked Up in the Air. She's done a lot of flying.
The original Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Smiley's People with Alec Guinness are pretty good.

Just watched This Must Be The Place. Bit of an oddball this one, something about Sean Penn playing a depressed goth. It's got David Byrne in it and Fargowoman. Surreal, good script, bit Wes Anderson, interesting dry humour. |

Fargowoman is Frances McDormand, great actress. Go watch Blood Simple. I saw This Must Be The Place in the cinema; found it horribly disjointed tbh, though the humour, Byrne's song and Penn's performance made it just about bearable. |

Sean Penn is a great actor. It was a bit all over the place, but not as bad as some films of that genre. It was highly watchable IMO and more interesting that a Wes Anderson. I looked up the director, Paolo Sorrentino, and apparently both his parent's died in a domestic accident when he was 17. I think he is a bit fucked up and using the medium of film to express his inner fucked upness. There were a few other interesting faces turned up in this film asides fargowoman. Going to check out some of his previous films, starting with The Family Friend |

Wonder if BF is gonna check out the Farrellys' Three Stooges. I saw the first half hour. It wasn't bad. The slapstick could have been stronger. Trey Parker did better with his Three Serial Killers from the Satan's Halloween episode.

I have no idea what the original Three Stooges was like but the trailer for the film makes it look absolutely awful. The "eye-phone" joke.. bloody hell. I'm surprised to hear Larry David being involved in some capacity as producer. Maybe it's better than the trailer suggests. |
