seems the forum has been a bit unusually quiet...not as much excitement as i would have expected. grand duchy, upcoming grand duchy tour (i wonder what the set list will be?!), der golem, pixies shows this summer, new blackfrancis site, new fb workout podcast in the pipeline!!

seem like a fair number of previous contributors have gone into hiding.....

or has frank delivered so much excitement in the past that he has now set the bar too high and unable to deliver to our high expectations?

i really enjoyed his new video blog at blackfrancis.net.

http://blackfrancis.net/blog/

i like the whole art thing going on. plus the boas!!

maybe everyone is on twitter...i haven't checked that out yet.

It's too much stuff, and it's spread all over. Grand duchy, upcoming grand duchy tour, der golem, pixies shows this summer, new blackfrancis site, new black francis blog, new songs everywhere, but only available in some places.

It's getting hard to keep up, when even the discussions about what he's doing seem to be going on in various places, here, the official site, the blog, etc.

For example, I would love to get the der golem boxset, but it's worrying to think that maybe I won't because the chance to buy it will go under the radar, kind of unnoticed, due to lack of information or excitement generated.

Yes, I'm old and gray, damn those interweb kids.

velvety, sign up with http://www.blackfrancis.net/ for a heads up on when der golem's box is released.

oh and this show was made available http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=15373 thanks for that by the way.

haven't checked out der Duchy but thats a states thing, and I'm more of a hard copy cd at the least type especially when it comes to EPs. I just love those little guys. trouble is many record stores are closing or are already done and gone.

I paid a quarter for Pollys Into Me using the Amazon exclusive store but can't seem to locate it on my downloads...?

oh and I pulled my back out sneezing so theres that.

Fu, I think i'm turning into one of those Greatest Hits fans :(
Or maybe i'm just waiting to connect again.

I haven't been into the music like I used to for a long time now. I don't believe this to be a slur against recent records, more to do with my own personal journey with music and emotions blah blah blah. Songs that fit.
Who cares! As long as he keeps writing, right.

ONE thing never fails to make me smile, though. The songs and sounds that turn me on the most are those left off of the records. Like the Grand Duchy european sites songs, Virginia Reel, Polly's Into Me, Rabbit Hole, etc.

I'm looking forward to the brand spankin' new frankblack.net...or should i say, frankblackfrancis.net, and a European tour with FB and whoever would be grand.

blackfrancis.net is neat.

f*** twitter! ;)

I think the silence may have to do with the lack of happenings over the last year... nothing really to discuss y'know? Like, Fort Wayne leaked two years ago, and its only released this week in North America. Bluefinger took 10 months after its leak to be released, and the golem was originally performed a year ago. I guess its hard to keep excitement for these things for so long. It's not frank's fault obviously, it's the record companies who feel the need to space out his releases. Meanwhile all the touring is going on either on a small area of the west coast or europe, making the easter/central north american fanbase alienated. Mind you i am still excited for the golem, and i have been rediscovering some frank stuff - listened to dog in the sand/ black letter days/ bluefinger and svn fngrs over the month. Plus, i absolutely love Bad News and The Flower Song.

Brank, you hit the nail on the head. I will even go further, and I am horrified to do so...but I can't even come around to listening to anything by the Man at present. Not that I've lost interest, just a burn-out that seems to not let up...

I think that last time I listened to Frank was to learn Don't Clip Your Wings on the geetarr to play for my parakeets (they love the song, believe it or not). And this was about 6 months ago. I think about putting on some Frank constantly, but I just can't get myself to do it.

I hate that feeling!!!

I am finding it impossible to find the Grand Duchy album at any store...and this is the first time I have not had a Frank album before it was released (thanks to friends)...and strangely, after hearing FORT WAYNE over a whole two years ago, I don't care.

Yuck...this is a horrible topic...

I actually burnt out on Frank's solo work too, although the occasional song is nice! Starting to get obsessed with the Pixies again- their the perfect rock band! it's amazing how long I have been listening to the Pixies for and I am still not bored of them as long as I moderate my listening.

I don't really listen to the Pixies at the moment.

However, summer's on the way. And it will be time to listen to 'Bossanova' very loudly.

I think part of the thing is which is similar I think to the point Velvety was making that there is that excitement but it's kinda hard to track due to everything is so spread out (blackfrancis.net, facebook, myspace, twitter, this forum etc). It also hurts that this forum has crashed so many times we don't have that history right now. I am guessing that we would have at 25-50 pages of Grand Duchy posts if all of those threads would have survived. I also agree with Brank Flack that it would be a lot easier to get even more excited if Grand Duchy were going to be touring around my area. It gets a little frustrating that Charles has been to Europe/The West Coast 2-4 times each since late fall/early winter 1996 when he hasn't been here at all during that time. I do understand that it's a lot harder to make money though playing in fly over country. So I am cool with it.

I'm always here waiting for any opportunity to feel the magic that I felt hearing pretty much everything up to Show Me Your Tears. That was the last of Mr Black's records that completely eclipsed all other music listening for a substantial amount of time. There is actually a fair amount of honeycomb and Fastman Raiderman that I like but somehow I just don't hold those records close to my heart in anything like the same way.

To me Bluefinger just felt so ordinary and while I was a lot more excited after the first few plays of Seven Fingers (can't face writing it without the vowels) I don't really feel the urge to go back to it very often. I loved Fort Wayne the first time I heard it but surrounded by the rest of Petit Fours it is clear there is little in Grand Duchy that is for me. Strangely enough the songs of this period that really do make my heart skip a beat are the ones that don't seem to make the cut. I adore the studio tracks from Christmass and the clips of songs that were appearing on the old blackfrancis.net.

So this topic is about current stuff and my next hope of re-igniting my total and complete obsession is Der Golem. And the latest Pixies announcement... whatever it may be.. I used to hope they wouldn't record a new album for fear that it would affect my feelings about their original records which mean so much to me. Now I'm just sick of it being a topic of conversation and whatever they could do to put an end to the debate would be fine by me. Personal preference at the moment would be for the Pixies to announce their final ever show and for Joey and Dave to get together with Eric Drew Feldman as part of the Catholics v.2 for fbs future recordings and just let Kim get on with her thing.

Having a quick glance through what I just wrote, I definitely find it hard to accept I'm actually that negative about it all. I hope I don't grow out of my obsession with his music any further.

Like Transmarine, I find myself in a strange place with Frank. I'm almost apathetic to everything he might be doing. For one thing, it's all so scattered anymore, and it's impossible to keep up. But I've also burned myself out on the existing material so badly that I don't put the music on very often. And that feels weird. For years, I was obsessed, and part of me probably still is, but I don't have the yen to put on Black Letter Days or TOTY or the rest like I used to.

I hope this new Pixies thing -- Minotaur -- is great. I hope it gets me excited again like I was when I first heard the Pixies -- or even obscure songs like Rabbit Hole. Because I just can't bring myself to be passionate anymore like I once was, and that seems strange.Never mind.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

The man has a big catalog so there's usually some fb/bf to go look at again. I haven't burned out on his music lately. I think that's mostly cos of the number of live and especially acoustic boots I've downloaded the last couple of years. Nothing like a live version to re-ignite interest in a studio recording. Besides which I just don't tire of good acoustic versions.

Even though I didn't get as fired up about 7F and GD as I did about Bluefinger, I don't mind so much. I'm still getting a kick out of how he's approaching things. I'm guessing Der Golem will sound a lot like 7F with odd EDF touches. And I don't think I'll like new Pixies songs anywhere near as much but that's ok. I'm taking the long view.

Not new pixies songs, all the albums we already have (not remastered) plus a live dvd for 175 dollars. I'm actually bitter about this release.

That's the first I've heard about it. $175 for that ain't too pretty at all. Would remastering make much difference anyway? It's hard to imagine any Pixies album sounding that much better, all except Doolittle which I always thought sounded toothless. The songs they reworked with Gil Norton (River Euphrates, Gigantic) after Doolittle sounded a lot better, meaner. I wish they could reissue Doolittle toothed up that way.

By the way I meant not liking hypothetical new Pixies songs as much. Joey's guitar's a wah wah too fah!

In regards to the remastering thing, i guess its just the fact that you'd be paying for the same editions of the same cd you already own, plus a dvd and some artwork for 175 dollars. It wouldn't be so bad if they hadn't hyped it and got everyone's hope up on their facebook page.

I appreciate the courage it takes to broach this rather uncomfortable subject up here.

For what it's worth, I'm excited about seeing Grand Duchy in a few weeks, and I'm enjoying the album more than I expected I would. (Admittedly, I went in with low expectations based on "Fort Wayne" and their track on the Cure tribute, neither of which exactly set my heart on fire.)

I'm so damned tired of waiting for "The Golem." I know these things take time, but good grief... seems I woulda-coulda-shoulda gone to see it at that film festival in SF. Had I only known it would take this long for the album to come out.

Since that unfortunate interlude around "Cult of Ray" we were spoiled for so long with an album a year from the big fella. But it seemed to me like the wheels fell off with "Svn Fngrs," which wasn't a proper album... and whatever it was, I still think it was a bit of a mess. But that was more palatable because I thought the Golem would be appearing soon after.

Ah, who the hell knows. I'm going to support the guy in perpetuity, buying everything he puts out and going to all the shows I can. But I definitely feel a need to be THRILLED by his music again. I want to feel that same electric shock I've felt through nigh on twenty years listening to this guy's records.

Sorry for the rant, but thanks for the opportunity to vent a bit.

I think one of the things I miss the most in Charles' music is being thrilled with the guitars. That is one of the things that I first loved about the Pixies: the interplay of 2 guitars, and the ground-breaking nature of many of the sounds he came up with.

Same thing with his solo work, especially with Lyle Workman, and later with the Catholics. There were always some songs that I had to listen to over and over.

Although Bluefinger and Svn Fngrs have their moments, I miss that interplay.

I'd rather be anywhere or doing anything

I really like the new tunes a lot. I am guessing though that since his style now is so different from FB&TC's that it would make sense that a lot of his old fan base wouldn't follow. The sad thing is though, it doesn't seem like many new fans are taking the place of the old ones.

Well, i'm relatively young (18), and after getting into the pixies i got into his solo work, around fastman raiderman time. I think i'm more excited about his newer songs than i would be about catholics records (though i LOVE dog in the sand, black leter days, show me your tears and to some extent devil's workshop). Plus, he'll probably get more pixies fans who are curious this about his music this way. I just hope what ever frank's doing he's following his muse, and not forcing anything due to expectations, i think Der Golem is representative of this. I know i'll always follow him, and i hope der golem riles up excitement among the hardcore fans that posted here so much in the past.
I think he's at his best currently when he mixes the songwriting of frank black, with artsy production values, like he did on christmass and appears to be on the golem. Imagine a whole album of new christmass like songs - that'd get me thrilled again. Also, i think it might help if he spent more time on the songs, like the lyrics and stuff. I felt like on bluefinger and Svn fngrs there were some parts where you could kind of tell he wrote it in the studio in 20 minutes, it'd be nice to feel the effort that it seems went into his songs before that. I dont want to seem negative, because there were as many inspired lyrics on those albums.
Charles, if you've read any of this, i want you to know that me and everyone else here loves you and you're work, and anything here is just constructive criticism. You, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, and Lou Reed are my favourite songwriters of all time, i'll always follow you, and i LOVE bluefinger and svn fngrs and am excited for whatever solo work comes my way.

HAAHAHAHAHAHAH

Daisy Girl, thanks, it's the only place on the internet where they'll tolerate my passion for all things Greg Dulli and I have to tell you, Scott Ford's pretty fucking awesome.
New Twilight Singers in 2010 whoooohoooo!

and I don't know if it's timid as much as respectful.
I am not here enough to speak so boldly without knowing the unspoken boundaries, and I don't want to offend on a site where the artist's name is in the url.
Believe me it's taken years of inadvertently pissing people off to come to that conclusion! hahaha

Hi MissMaceo, I wouldn't worry about being disrespectful too much. I think if you look around here, there's a wide opinion of different phases FB/BF's work. I think part of what makes BF/FB's art so good is that it always provokes such a reaction either way. I think we would be in trouble if there wasn't a reaction.

I had the time and inclination to do exactly that too. And both albums never sounded better. I mean they both really hit untrackskipable nirvana this time. I love it when that happens. It's insane that they only represent a single year of releases.
